It's a shame to lose 6-7 6-7 to such a weak tie-break player like Mahut. Cilic hasn't got mentality to be a big champion.

Meh, not up to it today. Mahut :yeah: some great half volleys. Hope he makes the Wimby MD

Awesome result :bounce:

It was a very close match with no breaks of serve. Nico played both tie-breaks better and didn't lose a single point on his serve in any of the 2 tie-breaks.

Mahut didn't serve&volley as much as I've been used to seeing him in the past. But he did win quite a few nice points at the net :yeah:

Mahut saved 3 set points in the second set: 4:5 (15-40) & 5:6 (30-40). Cilic was really close to win the set only at first setpoint when his return was minimally outside.

That should help Mahut's ranking and confidence a little bit. Good stuff! :worship:

incredible 1st TB from Mahut, amazing volleys and half volleys

get this guy a WC for Wimbledon!

Fairly decent tie-breaks from Mahut but poor from Cilic. Cilic was putting some decent pressure on Mahut on return, he should have taken advantage of his slowly accumulating momentum. Some great volleys and half-volleys from Mahut but his return game remains poor. Still, i'll be supporting him come Wimbly if he gets a WC.

Very close match, could have easily gone to third, Cilic had few SPs. Unfortunately for this breed of exclusively aggressive base-liners, they don't deal well with low slices on grass, and while they are trying to get below the ball to hit it, net charger is already at net. Marin against Nicolas on any other surface - no doubt who will win, but grass is for different animals.

Cilic's record in tiebreaks was once captured on film:

Pretty sure he has the worst record in the top50.

Cilic played almost every big point badly. Mahut struggled in the 2nd set more, but deserved the win.

absolutely true , it's really frustrating to watch cilic's matches , he is much overrated , in croatia he is on voice as future one of the best players but truth is much painful , his shots are horrible , he don't have any nature shot and he don't have head for tennis player , every big point he played in casual style , his "main" weapon is forhend but truly that is horrible shot ... tragedy

Hilarious stuff. No natural shot, no head for tennis :haha: :worship: It's a miracle that he wins any matches at all. Yet, come DC or GS, you'd expect him to win his matches, not those underrated talents who have had it all right from the start of their career.

His backhand is his main weapon. His forehand is a confidence shot, inconsistent, but when it's on it can be massive. Guy needs to cut the errors in the big points, and introduce some volleying into his game. He's still young, and has already been making progress.

Mahut needs to pull at least one more win out of the bag, and then he's in with a very good shot at getting a Wimbledon MD WC considering his pedigree on grass.

I think it was enough considering they did not give him one WC when he was a Queens finalist 2 years ago, they will want to catch up in 2009. 5 wins, 2 being against Tipsarevic and Cilic in 2 sets seems enough tP get a WC, imo.

Cilic is #13 in the ATP rankings with 2 ATP titles this year. Now he lost to a good grass-court player. What's overrated there?

Not surprising. i expected a much easier score, like Mahut, 60 61. Nico's only rivals on grass are Federer and Gasquet.

Karlovic is tough opponent for Mahut in next round. Dr. Ivo is serving like devil himself, even better than last year.

I think he'll be a lock for a WC if he wins one more. You are right in saying that he is likely to get one, but I am not entirely sure just yet.

Well done by kind Nico. :) Wish he'd won the tourney in 07.

More than picking up the win or loss, Cilic needs to have learned from watching/playing Mahut. Marin has the physical potential to be great on grass, but his game currently lacks some major elements.

Though I do wonder if he'll ever deal with low bounces. He's going to be a hard courter unless he develops his game.

Henry Chinaski
06-10-2009, 11:04 PM
cilic bends his knees extremely well, on his bh side especially. low bounces shouldn't really be a problem for him. it's not like he played like a clown today. he choked some half chances and was edged out by a very good grass court player.

obviously needs to work on his net game a lot amongst other things.

Yes, Tsonga won the most this year - 18, Roddick - 17.

saw only patches of the match. cant say Im displeased, cause Mahut is the man, but Chila... I expect more from him. stones in the first place - to be exact - than evolution. dunno, maybe its all going in the right direction just the way it must have, but still...

Cilic did not face a single break point, awful tie breaks from him, credit to Mahut, some nice volleys, but he produced some nice volleys and very fluke returns
