Can we dare to have a grass season thread? Truc reported that the injury with his knee is not as serious as it looked....

I love the grass season, to start with, Wimbledon fortnight was the only time I ever got to watch tennis when I was young and I completely associate it with Scotland's all too brief summers, being light all night, eating strawberries like they're going out of fashion, drinking ice cold cider in the garden etc etc etc :D

I love grass season and I'm so glad to hear Gillou's knee injury is not serious, since I'm going to be at Queens.

The 2nd time I saw Gilles live was at Wimbledon 07, losing in 5 sets to Youzhny. It was a really fun match.

Good luck to Gilles on the grass.

despite what results say I think grass could one of his best surfaces : usually he has time on the ball, he can hit in advance without any problems, doesn't have any problem to hit a backspin ball and his serve is improved a lot. I remember when two years ago he played an amazing match against youzhny (when the russian was very strong  ) that endend only at the 5th set.
But we will see, lately he's putting his weight behind during the moment to hit the ball, he lost punch and some of his natural equilibrium during cross court rallies. Of course everything depends by this bad shape he got this whole year...

but it's time to change, to be back at last year

hopefully he will like green more then red like color

Tulasne gives some news in L'Equipe today, the knee is healing, but it's not completely sure yet he will be able to play at the Queen's. It's an old injury which had been bothering him for 6 months. He will resume the training today and see if he can play through the pain. He'll go to London anyway and he will decide in last minute if he plays or not.

Is it just me or is he moving gingerly? He usually have great foot work but he seems to be reaching for the ball and not bending his knees either. Did he say his knee is healed before the match? Maybe lack of practice for the past week due to the knee problem, I guess.

Yeah that's what I was thinking about his movement. He was definitely moving VERY gingerly at the start of his match and seemed frightened to move at all. It is a lot better than it was but it is still hindering him a little. I'm surprised Dimitrov hasn't tried to take advantage of it more than he has but that's a good thing for us ;)

The news in L'Equipe today:
http://img2.pict.com/c0/8e/2b/dae71f58c46773a8eb4a2304aa/PfueA/300/lapoigne.jpg (http://img2.pict.com/c0/8e/2b/dae71f58c46773a8eb4a2304aa/PfueA/lapoigne.jpg)

The injury of the sinew is still there and he will have to play with it for a while, but he's been icing his knee all the time and the inflammation is getting better.
His practice time on grass was pretty short: 45 minutes with Santoro, 1 hour with Gabashvili, 1 hour with Murray. He's very proud because he won a set in training against Murray!
"Since my knee is bothering me and I don't want to run much, I didn't wait for the errors of my opponent and I took the offensive. Even more since it was on grass. There aren't tons of options when you hit on the run on grass, either you really go for a countershot or you could kick yourself to not have done it."
So he was quite bold when things got close. Like on the 1st SP for Dimitrov in the 1st set, Gilles saved it with a good volley. The 2nd SP was wasted by Dimitrov who was too greedy and missed a FH. That's still his big problem, he often "bites off more than he can chew".
Gilles also is pleased with his reaction at 4-2 in the 2nd set, he had lost his concentration, but regrouped immediately. And then he uses a hilarious expression to say that he had guts in the final tiebreak and really went for it - I don't know how to translate it, it's a funny way to say he showed his balls then, something like "all balls out". So the journalist says his language is a bit shocking for the Queen's tournament. Gilles: "I stick to my expression! The winning FH return, that's guts! The BH attack on MP too."
Perfect transition to the last part of the article about Gaël since the expression is very Gaël-style and will probably give him a good laugh.

The knee is a bit worrying, as expected, but he sounds in good spirits.
I'm glad we got to see the match, though, because he's embellishing his performance a little bit, he wasn't that offensive, was he? Our German commentator kept whining he was too passive and should charge the net more (and I kept thinking "sure, but there is a reason why he doesn't go to the net more, coco...")
It's true he played well when it mattered, so that's a big improvement compared with some of his recent matches. The "toutes couilles dehors" attitude certainly should help more than the Calimero one.

I watched it on ATDHE.fr (ripped from TV Seba) and the French commentator would agree with your German one; for a change, I found his groundstrokes deep and agressive most of the time and that's the way to go for him IMO, charging the net when you're not a great volleyer is not necessarily a great idea; he did hit some great FH volleys though especially the one to win the 7th game :hearts:

Thanks for the articles :]

Thanks for the translation, Fran.

I didn't get to start watching until 5/5 in the 1st set but from what I seen, his movement was 60% - 70%, I'm quite worry about the knee, more important that he doesn't make it worse before Wimby. I guess he does come to the net more often than he used to in this match? I can't compare since I haven't seen him play on grass before. But his net game, to be improved, guess he just need to do it more in order to get better. Maybe this will do him good that he can't run, forces him to get to the net more. Good luck today.

A weird match.
In the 1st set, he had no first serve.
In the 2nd set, he decided to take his time in the rallies, got his bearings and finally managed to hit the ball harder.
In the 3rd set, he messed up the first game again and was broken. Then at 2-0 he felt a pain in the knee, panicked, stopped playing, gave Youzhny the next 2 games. It was a bit better afterwards, but too late.
"Since I don't know this pain very well yet, I'm always on the watch, scared as soon as I feel something. In the morning I keep touching my knee as if it was going to give me some information."
If it's bothering him that much, why the hell didn't he stay home? "Because I'm able to play, of course! I beat Dimitrov playing a good match. It's the only tournament I will play before Wimbledon. If I only played when I had no pain at all, you wouldn't see me very often! The difference is that I've assimilated the other pains, like the problem with my arm which has been bothering me for 6 months now. This one, not yet. The injury of the patellar sinew (about 1 cm) was already visible on X-rays one year ago. The healing will take a lot of time, several months. The doctor said the exercise is recommended to help the vascularization... I'm listening to the doctor."

If I only played when I had no pain at all, you wouldn't see me very often!

Gillou  It must be really hard, for all of them, to have to play when carrying injuries and being in pain, but I guess you can't just put your career on hold because you're in pain, just like you can't put your life on hold, you just have to get on with it! So no way of seeing Gilles' form tomorrow :awww:. I'm a bit worry for him in Wimby. Just came across this blog and seems like he's still not quite there yet. http://alexkayblog.dailymail.co.uk/2009/06/wimbledon-buildup-tuesday.html
Watched Simon and Tsonga hitting for a long time. They looked relaxed enough but they were both clearly having difficulties adjusting to the grass. Tsonga is a beast of a man and getting down to the low bounces was proving tough, even though he was striking the ball well. Simon was a mixture of very solid and strangely inconsistent, with too many of his groundstrokes nowhere near to clearing the net. Practices can only tell you so much but I wouldn't fancy out-of-form Simon to do too much next week on what I saw. Credit to the pair of them though, they practised for a very long time.

I'm even worry if Wimby will change his seeding since he hasn't done much on grass so far. It's good that at least the next 3 guys in top 10 hasn't done much on grass either. I just hope he'll be in top 8 seeds.

Lapentti books semi-final spot with victory over Simon at Boodles
11:00am Thu 18th Jun 09:: written by Steve Spencer

The sunshine held out for world No.7 Gilles Simon as he took on Nicolas Lapentti yesterday (Wednesday), but the English weather got the better of Philippe Kohlschreiber and Viktor Troicki as they took to the court on the second day of The Boodles Challenge.

Simon and Lapentti entertained the crowd at Stoke Park in a thrilling first match which ended in a championship tie-breaker at 13-11.

Lapentti took the first set 6-4 and started the second set 4-0 up before Simon battled back to take the set off the Ecuadorian. Despite the world No.7's form of the last year however, Lapentti walks away with victories over Simon on clay, hard court and now grass. He wil play either Kohlscreiber or Troicki in the semi-finals.

The second match between Philpp Kohlschreiber and Viktor Troicki began under darkening clouds in Stoke Poges, South Bucks, and was eventually suspended with the young Serbian 3-0 in the first set. Play will re-commence today (Thursday) at 1.30pm.

“I am pleased with my performance today, It’s always very nice to play some matches before Wimbledon," said Lapentti.

"It’s great to play here at Boodles against friends where I can practice, play and relax. The rain break was OK - you have to get use to it. I now know how to deal with it - hopefully it won’t rain and the spectators can still enjoy some tennis!”

Also today is the first semi-final between Nicolay Davydenko and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. This is followed by an exhibition match between Fernando Gonzalez and Feliciano Lopez. The final game is Koralev against Evans.

Yesterday, Simon was announced as the eighth seed in the men's draw for Wimbledon, which starts on Monday. Tsonga has been seeded ninth, while Davydenko is 12th and Lopez 22nd. Kohlscreiber is the 27th seed and Troicki 30th,

I hate to have that thinking that player can just slap out of their slump. But if there is one who can do it, Gilles will be the one, afterall, he did that last year. Allez Gilles.

Well, I hope he beat Grisha. I hate to see haters get another excuse to kick him while he's down.
Now, pray for a good draw. I haven't been so nervous to see a draw for a long while. It actually feels great that I finally care, makes it a lot more fun to watch tennis when there's someone to cheer for. Merci Gillou.

I loved the "live draw on Twitter" stunt. :worship: So much better and interactive than just typing out the draw.
The "Gilles" comment was the highlight, the poor Twitter guy had obviously never heard of Gilles Simon yet.

Bobby Reynolds in the 1st round for Gilles and the winner of Kiefer-Pavel in the 2nd round.

A simplified translation:

How is your knee?
It's tough, but I'm trying. I'm not playing Wimbledon every week. I will try to do the maximum here. It was my first practice session here today.

Would you have played if it wasn't for Wimbledon?
That's not really the point. But I certainly wouldn't have played the Queen's tournament. I would have taken a longer rest. I tried to have a normal preparation. Now I'm here and I'll try to do my best.

How do you feel?
I'm hitting the ball quite well. When my movement is a bit hampered, I'm more relaxed and I'm striking the ball better. It will be important to not be too passive and to hit the ball well.

Does your injury take some pressure from you and does it change your approach to the tournament?
It's easier before an event when I know I'm not at 100% and I will just try to do my best. I would prefer to be in good shape, though (he smiles). I'm more relaxed than before other Slams for sure. I really have zero pressure. But I would prefer to not be in pain.

How do you assess your form right now?
80%. And we know it's tough enough to win matches even when one is at 100%. I played exhibition matches last week and it was 1 set all in 3 matches. It will be a 50-50 story. I will just try to feel better match after match. Even if I wasn't at top speed, at least I didn't feel any pain in my last two matches. That's already a good thing.

Do you enjoy playing on grass?
It depends on the game of my opponent. It can be very frustrating against a good server. It's tough to keep the rhythm, especially in best of five matches. Otherwise, it's fun.

You haven't missed much in regards to Gilles!

In L'Equipe today:
http://img2.pict.com/ca/5f/39/bd1df7f8c2237ad8ee1f24f3a0/3Xz53/300/moinsvingt.jpg (http://img2.pict.com/ca/5f/39/bd1df7f8c2237ad8ee1f24f3a0/3Xz53/moinsvingt.jpg)
It's pretty much the same, he feels at 80%, which is a good thing in a way since he has zero pressure and doesn't remember having ever felt so relaxed before a Slam.
The journalist says he's less talkative than he usually is, though, and he seems in low spirits because of his knee. He answers the question with a joke: "I haven't tried everything yet for my knee. Neither the anti-inflammatories nor the injections nor the amputation, I still have a lot of options!"

Allez Gilles!!! Afternoon off work and some ice cold cider to celebrate!!!

That naughty BBC have been asking Gillou about Andy's chances of winning!!!:o

And Frenchman Gilles Simon, the world number seven, said: "I think Murray can do something very special here but that was also true in last year's US Open and this year's Australian Open, when he came up short, which just shows how tough it is.

"He won Queen's, which shows he's good on grass and has the game to triumph at big tournaments.

"Nadal won Roland Garros the first time he played there so it's never too soon. If he loses it won't be because he's to young or that it's too soon - it's just that there are some very good guys out there."
