Good win for LEGENDA. Ljubo has an easy path to the semifinals, were he should beat Nadal and then take the title (probably defeating Federer).

Tsonga is just awful on clay im afraid, hard to see why ,he's a great athlete with a huge serve, great volley and a big forehand. To be fair when Ljubo is serving that well you have very few chances to break meaning he only needs 1 oppurunity in each set. Thats what im afraid happened to JWT.

I am afraid Tsonga doesn´t know how to top spin. Ljubicic usaed more spin than him. Again, he wants to finish points too quickly, his point construction was too rushed, Ljubicic played with more patience and abused of passing shots. Tsonga couldn´t hit winners very easily here, even showing great power (Ljubicic still has great forehand and backhand me thinks).

There seems to me that there are some similarities between Ljubo and Hewitt in that at an older age, they seem to be able to play best in clay.

Well done :yeah:

This result means nothing regarding Tsonga's form. Tsonga can't play on clay. He's won five matches on the surface at ATP level.

If he had injured himself when he tripped and fell late in the second -- more proof he's not meant for clay -- it would have been ridiculous with grass season coming up. He should be happy with an injury-free loss.

Also, Tsonga is looking more fit right now than in a long time, which bodes well for grass.

Ljubicic is more fun to watch these days. Lots of great shotmaking and he's a thinker out there.

Not best of clay? grand slam SF, QF or better at all 3 Masters on clay.

His titles usually come on faster surfaces  He doesn't consistently get good results on clay. If you look at his record, faster surfaces have been more to his liking :)

Its pretty clear the number 1 issue with Tsonga is patience, and thats why his clay results are so bad. He actually can hit with topspin which he does when on the defensive, but he refuses to let the opponent make the error. Imagine Tsonga on ritalin, goat.

Fired Up!

Why is that? Djokovic would probably pay for a chance to play against Tsonga on clay.

That. :yeah: Except for the point construction part. He is 1 shot player from the baseline and 1-2 combo tops. He goes for the shot and does not reposition himself for the next ones because he isn't anticipating the returns. That is why his game is not cut for clay. He is surprised when opponents return his power shots and goes for even more from impossible positions. On contrary to him Ljubicic is a thinker.
