Madrid Open: vamos Tommy!

True enough, Tommy's in the quali draw (http://www.atpworldtour.com/1/posting/2009/1536/qs.pdf).

So weird. Don't know any of those guys he will/may face in the qualis. This will be interesting.
Will Tommy reach the MD? :p

Lugburz
05-09-2009, 02:00 AM
Yes he will

TommyB.

I don't know, he can lose against anyone on clay. :p

But his draw looks fine. ;)

Tommy will be hitting the court soon! OOP (http://www.atpworldtour.com/tennis/en/common/TrackIt.asp?file=/1/posting/2009/1536/op.pdf)

Btw, is it just me or is the official tournament website completely bonkers ...?

thefly
05-09-2009, 12:57 PM
Match is underway ... and Tommy just broke to a 3-1 lead.

EDIT

And Tommy takes the first 6-2. Well done. Solid serving, obviously.

thefly
05-09-2009, 01:37 PM
4-1 in the second, looking good.

How are things with the points ... The draw sheets say the qualifier in the end gets 25 points; on the main draw page though, it says a first round participant takes at least 10 points home. So how many points does a qualifier get when he enters the MD in the first round? 35? Or just 25, with the 10 points being for players who directly entered the MD?

EDIT

Tommy wins 6-2, 6-1 ... nice practice. Glad for any further match he gets to play ...

Toughest opponent that Tommy can get in the 1st Round of the MD is Wawrinka I think...

I would say Ferrer ;)

thefly
05-09-2009, 10:18 PM
Hope Tommy's an early riser. ;)
Of course wins are nice, and every additional match is a plus ... but then again, I'm not sure what it would do to his confidence if he crushed out of a qualifying ... :p
So yeah, he should reach the MD and take the extra points (how many that may be) and face whatever awaits him in the first round.

Here we go!

1-0* Tommy!

Nice serving up to now, 90% 1st serve points won, 59% 1st serves in, 2 aces, 1 df, had to save no break point so far...Vamos!!! ;)

Edit: Wooow, what a hold to 0!!! 5-2* Awesome stats now!

Solid first set.

This time, it's the world number 85 on the other side, fyi, so even though this guy doesn't have a particularly impressive singles record so far, I guess he's of a different quality than the last one ...

I really start liking that idea of Tommy playing the qualis right now. Not too strong opponents under a tournament atmosphere, hopefully at least four matches in a row ... good to see at last that he takes his preperations for RG a little seriously. ;)

He'll play the 4th match on court 6!

Tommy's choice of Tournaments to try to make come backs in always catches me by surprise. The Tournaments I think he will try to play in he doesn't and I never gave a thought about him playing in Madrid. Oh well Auf geht's Tommy :D (Since I'm a Nadal Fan also I like Vamos, but it just doesn't fit as a cheer for Tommy).

livescore.com seem to be ok but it is stuck on the andujar/garcia lopez match....

I think they get their scores also from the ATP scoreboard. Or it's rain delay. But I think it's more likely a technical glitch with the scoring ...

05-11-2009, 04:16 PM
hardly there's a rain delay,as the other matches are going fine..

Yeah, nice reward, the match against Andy, and in moving images for us. ;)
Just to crunch some numbers, Tommy beat Andy four times on clay, never lost, and it's Andy's debut on clay this year. Now we'll see where Tommy is standing right now ...
At least he has a day off now after three matches.

Wyna
05-11-2009, 08:58 PM
I don't expect anything from the next match but it's great for Tommy that he is getting some match practice. And some wins in a row (even in quali draw) should be good for his confidence.

thefly
05-12-2009, 12:49 PM
I still wonder whether Tommy will get additional points for going through the qualis. Like, currently 45 plus 25? Would be fair ... I have no idea about these things; never had to worry about stuff like that with Tommy before ... :p

thefly
05-12-2009, 01:46 PM
Just looked into it a bit and now can answer my own question with a "yes" ... that's cool, so now Tommy's at least already past that 1000 points barrier once again.
Now maybe some more points here, then some in Paris, and he should have a little cushion in case something bad happens on grass ...

I don't know ... that feels just wrong. Doesn't feel like Roddick had to do much - despite Tommy playing pretty strong throughout - except serving strong in the 2nd and 2rd and taking advantage of Tommy's own at times weak serve. I hate that. Tommy would have earned to get that one in two. Just one or two points here and there ... frustrating.
All the more because over a long period, that almost felt like good old times (with the exception of the backhand maybe).
Well. At least it was promising ...

well at least as thefly said it was promising...
And consolation would be:I didn't see Tommy got nervous like before, that could mean that he's aware what match he lost, nothing more but match that he should have won.So I guess,he's prepared for the next challenge...but still this was very bad loss..

I am not sure his calmness is a good thing. May be he didn't have much expectation. Tommy always likes to argue :D and I thought that shows his motivation. I think a couple of loose points cost him the match that he should have won. I wouldn't say he wasn't mentally tough. He saved 11 break points which won't be done without mental toughness.

This should have been Tommy's win  but I think this tournament could be a good sign for the upcoming season.

That was fucking pathetic.
I still can't believe he lost, especially now when Roddick got the WO from Davydenko.
I watched the match until 2 all in the 3rd and until that point I thought he;d be the winner.
In the 1st set he made a joke from Roddick, completely outplayed him.
In the 2nd he was still the better player overall, but couldn't win the important points (30 all on Roddick's serve at 5 all and 4 all) and those 2 MP's
If he can't win against Roddick on clay, so against who he can?!

Well you might know I missed the great 1st Set and came in very early in the 2nd Set.
Early on even in the 2nd Set Tommy was serving well and he was as is said in tennis "painting the lines"--like Nadal does.
But as the Match went on the serve started to go and the shots instead of "painting the lines" were going long. I knew as soon as Roddick won the TB in the 2nd Set that he would win the Match

It's not like Federer is crushing Roddick today, 7:5 6:7 at the moment. ;)

I think this shows what I already thought: It was a match on a high level, probably the best I've seen from Tommy for a while, but if Roddick plays and especially serves like he did in set 2 and 3 vs Tommy it's gonna be a tight match against anyone, even on clay or at least on a fast claycourt as we have in Madrid. And then it's about making the deciding points, Tommy didn't, but there are lots of opponents who couldn't have held their serves all the time like Roddick, the way Tommy played.

I'm much more concerned whether he can play at the same level again, if he does and gets a good draw, we can expect something from him in Roland Garros.
