Wimbledon finals: Ivanisevic/Rafter vs Nadal/Federer

Everyone has said that Nadal vs Federer was the most memorable final, not only at Wimbledon but perhaps in tennis history and that it's the best one... although I agree that quality wise it was amazing & spectacular, plus the fact that they were no.1 & no.2, I have to say that when Ivanisevic finally won Wimbledon, as a wildcard when nobody expected it, it was just the most stunning & greatest moment in tennis... It's like "WOW, this guy was so close so many times before, and just when you think that he's way past his prime and that his dream is gone, he manages to win the whole thing in a spectacular 5-set match 9-7 in the third." Too bad it was at the expense of Patrick Rafter, but at least Rafter had won 2 us opens in his career so he knows how it feels to win a grandslam. That being said, how would you compare both finals. They are both incredibles, but which on ranks higher in your opinion? I really think that it's going to be hard to beat the Ivanisevic moment, it's just too emotional, what a story and journey and to win in such a close match too...

Both are fantastic, but I would take any of the Becker-Edberg instead, even the 1989 when Edberg made like 700 UEs. Rafter I really like and miss a lot, but would take his 2000 semi with Agassi over his finals.

Out of the matches I posted in this thread from Wimbledon 2001, all were far better than the 2008 Wimbledon final.

I was happy Ivanisevic finally won a slam but the styles were not as interesting in that match. 2 serve and volleyers equal snooze fest. Nadal and Federer match was amazing so I chose that.

Ivanišević/Rafter :D

The Ivanisevic/Rafter final was strange. Who would have predicted 4 sets between them in a row without even a 6-4 set? I rate the Nadal/Federer match higher but out of all Wimbledon finals I rate Borg/McEnroe's in 1980 the most.

Love the fact that the Ivanisevic/Rafter match had a quirkey twist of a wildcard playing and getting the rowdy monday fans, it was tense and fun all in one...but that aside the quality of the rafa roger shots were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better

Nadal / Federer hands down. To me the greatest tennis match in history, let alone the additional drama of what was at stake, the fading daylight, the missed match-points, the number of winners, the tiebreaks, and Bjorn watching (supposedly calm) from the stands.

The quality in Nadal-Federer was far better, but I´d still pick Ivanisevic-Rafter as my favorite. The drama, intensity and excitement in that match was something unreal. And as much as I liked Rafter, it was great to see Ivanisevic finally getting that one GS win he´d been chasing for so long. I´m sure one of the reasons people still talk about that match is that Goran was more of a personality than today´s whole top 20 combined.

The Ivanisevic/Rafter final had the best atmosphere I've ever seen at a non-Davis Cup tennis match. It looked like a football game or something. And then there was the wildcard thing and all that. But tennis-wise, it wasn't even close to the 2007 or 2008 finals.

08. But maybe I'm still upset over the 01 result :tears:

How about adding a third option ?

Edberg/Becker 1990 Wimbledon Final

How about adding a third option ?

Edberg/Becker 1990 Wimbledon Final

90 is the one with more tennis from Boris and Stef, but I prefer the 89 one just for watching Edberg's face in the end of the second set, after wasting 3 SP on serve, then on the tiebreak not being able to win a point on serve.

But yeah, except for the comedy value, 1990 is probably the best Wimbledon final, tennis-wise.

08 was better quality, but the People's Monday had a much better atmosphere.

I get goose bumps even when reading this OP! :tape:
I remember so much emotions from that match and I rate it as my best tennis experience in front of tv!
I don't think such final will ever happen again!
Quality of play wasn't important even though it was very good!
The atmosphere was the best ever, I wish more GS finals would have finals on Monday with regular fans!

I agree the 2001 Wimbly final was played in the greatest of atmosphere's.
It could have been due to it being played on a Monday.

I may be wrong but this was the second ever singles final that was played on a monday (the other being 1988 Edberg defeats Becker, 4-6,7-6,6-4,6-2). Anyone know if it's correct?

Ivanisevic had a lot of luck on his side in 2001. In his semifinal versus Henmen he was down 2-sets-to 1 and Tim looked to to have the match as good as won but then it rained and by the time the players resumed, Henman was not the same. Too bad Pat Rafter could not be in the Wimbledon champions circle. He certainly desrved to.

I would rather Goran had won it in 1998 and Rafter in 2001.

Exactly what i miss about today's tennis; no real personalities, no funny and charming guys, Safin is the last old school guy left, but not for long....

I don't whether it was the second ever, but certainly Becker and Edberg finished their final in 1988 on Monday (the final had been begun on Sunday and was interrupted by rain at 3:2 for Edberg in the 1st set).

ivanisevic - rafter was a real feel good story.

becker - edberg was two players playing the classic aesthetic lawn tennis

federer - nadal was two titans, legends battling on the greatest stage in tennis.

there is no comparison imo.
