The "Andy Tries his Luck in Monte Carlo" thread

Discussion thread for Andy's forthcoming partipation in Monte Carlo

Currently he is in London where he has done a few sponsor pieces, including scaling the roof of the O2 arena for a publicity shoot.

He's been practicing on clay, at the NTC we assume, before heading out the riviera later this week.

04-09-2009, 10:51 AM
I wish Murray a successful partnership with Corretja, and that he can progressively improve his results on clay. Hope that he does overtake Djokovic and starts snapping at Federer's heels. He deserves to be up there. Good luck!

04-11-2009, 12:30 PM
Love it up to the semis :(

04-11-2009, 12:57 PM
According to most ppl on MTF Murray will have trouble getting past bye.

I think he should make QFs. Cillic/Berdych are not hot on clay. I think Kolya coming back from injury will be rusty and Nalbandian is unpredictable at best so SFs certainly possible.

04-11-2009, 01:34 PM
Tough draw for Andy

04-11-2009, 02:04 PM
Not the easiest.

Hanescu could be a tricky first match, he's in not bad form on the clay at all.

Berdych can be useful on the dirt as well, although Murray's game could give him fits. After that, who knows. Nalbandian on clay would be a very very tough match, but can David even make it that far?

04-11-2009, 11:41 PM
i wonder what Andy needs to happen this week to pass Djokovic hmmm

i think QF here would be a solid result for him, considering he's never made it to the QF of a clay tournament in his life (unless you count Roland Garros juniors in 2005 where he lost to Cilic)

04-12-2009, 12:16 AM
Rafa in the usual attire. :haha:

Andy looks nice, though. As does Novak's choice of outfit, which is a, er, pleasant surprise. ;)

Verdasco :hearts:

04-12-2009, 11:30 AM
verdasco is more elegant but andy:drool:

04-13-2009, 06:24 PM
Andy's looking great :hearts:
He's third up on centre tomorrow, after Gillou :)

04-14-2009, 12:08 PM
the start is no good:o

04-14-2009, 01:35 PM
Andy got it going to win 63 62.

I think...I don't know...certainly good enough today, but we'll see whether he's really going to cause problems against the better players in this draw.

04-14-2009, 01:42 PM
Nice performance :D

The next round will tell us more, but I think Murray will do very well on clay!

04-14-2009, 06:41 PM
Decent start on the dreaded dirt.

04-14-2009, 08:54 PM
Not too bad. I still have some concerns about the forehand and the movement forward, he seems to struggle getting off the mark, you have to stay very light on your feet and Andy is not necessarily like that - his movement tends to be more heavy footed.

But all in all, a good opener really.

Cilic vs Fognini is tomorrow on court 9 so no chance to scout the opposition.

04-15-2009, 05:54 PM
Fognini won 6-2 6-0, though I believe Cilic played a shocker.

So here's hoping Andy can clear the Fog tomorrow! Fourth on the main court.

04-15-2009, 06:34 PM
fognini is on fire;:scared:

04-15-2009, 06:54 PM
He is but I think Andy will have too much for him. He won't be slicing forehands all the time this time around.

Andy will need to keep a good depth though, especially off his forehand wing. This could get very tricky if Andy doesn't stay focused and fight hard.

04-16-2009, 08:31 AM
here is raining a lot:eek: what abt MC:lol:

04-16-2009, 03:00 PM
Good luck Andy - and not too much rain delays!

04-16-2009, 04:02 PM
Strangest 1st set ever!! Murray is a fighter for sure, no?

04-16-2009, 04:10 PM
Strangest 1st set ever!! Murray is a fighter for sure, no?
Strange is the right word for it^^ I didn't think he'd come back and even win the tiebreak. I hope he keeps on fighting like this in the second set :)

Edit: Haha^^ so he won't keep on fighting for now.

04-16-2009, 04:22 PM
Good thing he did fight well because he was atrocious for the first 20 minutes, very good for the next 30, and then nervy as hell for the next 20.

A craptastic set of tennis. I was shouting at the TV.

Have to keep in mind the conditions are very tricky, very hard to get the ball through the court when it's like this, and it's just slow and tough to play these sorts of matches. You have to be very mentally strong and just accept the frustrations and battle through, something Andy still struggles with at times.

Very frustrating situation for everyone, this.

04-16-2009, 04:42 PM
If he starts tommorow anything like he did today :help:

although he fought back well, im a unconvinced by his play in this match, i think Fognini is definately still in it especially if there is no more play today.

04-17-2009, 09:35 AM
Job done.

And call me a pessimist, I think that's as much as we can hope for from Andy this week.

04-17-2009, 09:41 AM

Scoobs, you're a pessimist. And so am I. But hey, a first quarter final on clay, it's a start.

04-17-2009, 09:43 AM
It is a start, and not a bad one.

I think there's much work to be done in his off weeks though.

04-17-2009, 11:47 AM
with davy will be another story btw here we go:)

04-17-2009, 04:02 PM
This is 1st match he has played in 2009 that im not expecting him to win. Im not nervous at all if he does win it it'll be a bonus i just want him to have a real go at it and be agressive!

04-17-2009, 04:30 PM

Bit better movement hopefully he's not too tired tomorrow and doesn't get blown away by nadal

04-17-2009, 07:00 PM
That must be it then.

04-17-2009, 07:02 PM
rafa on clay..will be no easy

but... :p

he has time for recover ,will be the second semi..dont think before 5 pm:unsure:

04-17-2009, 07:25 PM

04-17-2009, 07:27 PM
Good effort from Andy. He's a fighter, no question. he still looks uncomfortable out there with the movement, especially forward, but he's digging in and he's not losing matches when he's favoured with circumstances....well done.

Tomorrow will not, I think, be pretty, though.

04-18-2009, 06:58 AM
Andy should make Mugboar's knees crumble by forcing him to go back and forth between the baseline and the net by alternating between drop shots and lobs.

04-18-2009, 11:42 AM
Wow, I am really impressed with his result. Couldn't watch him play, so I can't judge on the way he played but anyways, a semi on clay that's pretty good for Andy! :yeah:

04-18-2009, 01:57 PM
This Djoko wawa match really good. Hope Murrays match can be a lil bit interesting!

GL Muz

04-18-2009, 04:48 PM

btw this is a good sign for rome and the n. 3

04-18-2009, 04:55 PM
Very well done to Rafa and well done to Andy - I thought he played an excellent second set from 1-4 down and really took the fight to Rafa, and it was compelling viewing at the end there. Proud of his efforts in that set.

04-18-2009, 04:56 PM
