Elle - did you say English wasn't your first language, despite being an Aussie? What is please?

My native background is Chinese so I grew up speaking Cantonese. I actually started school with very very bad English (my parents migrated to Australia when they were in their mid-twenties so their English was very subpar and hence they were not able to teach me) and I had to stay back with my kindergarten teacher (ahh Miss Blanch  ) to learn the language :tape:

But then I graduated as the school dux  I should state that dux is the term we use here instead of valedictorian in case you people think it means I was dumb :nerner:

Where is your mother from? Was it the Phillippines?

And yeh, my parents have never taken any English lessons and they just picked it up. They still can't speak it well and rely on me to do alot of things but they are able to get by and have started a somewhat successful business so they did well for themselves :)

:worship:

I do love the way everyone tries to console me by mentioning their mothers! :haha:

Am sure you mean well but it only rubs in the salt!

:rolls: :rolls:

It's Ok; I have learned to bear my age with fortitude. The alternative is frankly not acceptable.:rolls:

And age does wonders for one's self-confidence. You stop worrying what the world thinks of you and only care what you think of the world.

wise words

:rolls: I'd gathered that.

Much as I like Richie, am afraid that is one reason I don't go there much. There are a few relatively ancient souls in Noleland so I don't stick out so much.

early June. I bought insurance, which is more than 10% of the cost of the trip  But right now, cancel is not in the plan

Interestingly, I don't see panic in US, neighbour to Mexico. Anyway, everyday, there are more than thousands of people crossing the border from Mexico to Texas, Arizona and California.

That's scary but SARS is different from flu.

My brother and his family were in Hong Kong at the height of the epidemic. It scared the hell out of me. It's lucky that they had a place to stay that time when they visited Hong Kong. Otherwise, the family might end up staying in the hotel where the epidemic started. :scraed:

You could definitely speak Canto with me though my grasp of the language has gradually declined over time. This is something which I am definitely not proud of :o as I am very proud of being Chinese :)

P.S. in regards to the swine flu, I sure hope it's just an overreaction and it's nothing serious. Though I'm just glad it didn't originate from China this time :tape: Of course that's not a positive or anything but...just saying.

I changed it yesterday, yes. I'm moving to Germany on Friday, afterall ;) But mostly because of Sebastian of course.

With 'some' I mean 'not a enough'. I might be able to understand it but usually I can't really answer. I don't even feel comfortable talking English, so it can be all imaginary of course :rolls:. Never been a language person anyway. Maths, Geography, Chemistry, Physics and IT, those were my favourite classes :hearts:

How many spanish classes do you have each week? ;) You are taking one major in HKU or two?
One major.....my curriculum doesn't allow for another major or minor......but that's just my curriculum....normally for other curriculums you can have other majors and minors...
I have 2 Spanish classes per week.....4 hours in total

I loved Maths and Chemistry but not IT. Hated English classes but I was good at it. I usually like subjects which are straightforward and do not have too much arty-fartyness to it.

I have spoken to more friends about taking classes with me and they all seem to want to do Spanish too. Guess I will be going with the flow :)

It will be much better if you have friends to practice with. Especially all are learning at the same level.

You could definitely speak Canto with me though my grasp of the language has gradually declined over time. This is something which I am definitely not proud of :o as I am very proud of being Chinese :)

I can hardly write Chinese after living in NA so many years :o Still manage to read. And for talking, it's kind of a reflex  At home, I speak Canotonese with hubby and English with my son subconsciously. I have a friend here, her mother is from Hong Kong and her father is 2nd gen. Canadian. I tried to speak Cantonese with her but most time, we end up speaking English :tape:

P.S. in regards to the swine flu, I sure hope it's just an overreaction and it's nothing serious. Though I'm just glad it didn't originate from China this time :tape: Of course that's not a positive or anything but...just saying.

:tape:

:) You can practise Cantonese with me too

Btw, I am learning Spanish in my university as well...as a non-credit bearing course. It's really a nice language. I will have my year-end Spanish test on Wednesday.

Good luck. I guess your Spanish will be better than me

So many people here speak Cantonese :rolls: It's my native language as well

Pica_pica, you're learning spanish in uni? That's great! I've always wanted to learn Spanish and I hope that I can take Spanish in uni ;)

Obviously, her mom has no problem with her daughter wearing something like that. My son's class went on an overnight field trip today and I dropped him off and waited for him to get onto the tour bus before I let. That girl and her mom arrived 10 minutes late :tape: because they had to drop by starbucks to buy the girl and her friends frappacino, coffee, etc. The girl carries a Burberry overnight bag for the trip  and the mom looks like what we called "trophy wives" here. :tape:

Evening, btw.

:wavey:

And Yo Penguins :woohoo: I'm getting quite fond of them. Although if someone could give me an overview of tactics and refinement thereto in the game I'd appreciate it. It's sooo fast!

When I first watched hockey, I lost track of the puck (that flat, circle piece of hard plastic) all the time

There are 3 zones on the court. The middle part is called neutral zone and the rests are offensive and defensive zones.

A player cannot enter his offensive zone without a puck or the puck is already in the offensive zone. Otherwise, he's called offside. If a player is in the offensive zone while the puck is moved out of the zone, the player must leave the offensive zone, otherwise, if the puck returns to the zone and he touches the puck, it's offside too.

Power play/short hand: If a player commit a foul, he may receive a 2 minutes(minor penalty) or 4 minutes(double minor) or 5 minutes (major) penalty. He has to sit in the penalty box (thus his team has one skater less and is shorthanded) for the length of the time. If the player is the goalie, one of his teammate on the ice will have to sit out the penalty for him. For minor penalty, if the powerplay team scored, the player can return to play. For double minors, if the powerplay team scored in the first 2 minutes, the player will have to sit out the remaining 2 minutes. (I may be wrong here, kalisita) For major penalty, the player has to sit out the whole 5 minutes no matter what. If the offense is serious enough, a player may be given a major penalty plus game misconduct, that means, after his team is shorthanded for 5 minutes, the player cannot return to the game.

Thanks Lee. I only ever see it in the Winter Olympics but, aside from the need to put the puck in the net and the 'sin bin' aspect, it seemed like almost anything went.

Are there varying styles of play and subtle tactical ploys, as in soccer, or it is full tilt all the time? And what's the injury rate :scared:?

And I could never be a parent...I commend your patience.

During game time, each team has 20 players. Usually start up goalie and his backup. 6 defensemen (3 pairs) and 12 forwards (4 groups, each group consists of a left and right wing plus center) The teams change on the fly and coaches usually try to keep the group of forwards on ice for about 2 minutes. Each team is allowed 5 skaters and a goalie on the ice. Lots of time during changeover, a team may have more than 6 skaters but it's OK as long as the puck is controlled by the other team. Otherwise, a minor panalty will be accessed for the team and one of the skaters on the ice will have to sit the 2 minutes.

Thanks Lee. I only ever see it in the Winter Olympics but, aside from the need to put the puck in the net and the 'sin bin' aspect, it seemed like almost anything went.

Kind of  The ice surface is larger for international (ITF) events like the Olympics. For NHL, the ice surface is smaller :scared: with less room behind the goal. And it's even more anything went.

Are there varying styles of play and subtle tactical ploys, as in soccer, or it is full tilt all the time? And what's the injury rate :scared:?

Like every other sports, there are offensive plays and defensive plays. And as expected, offensive plays are nice to watch while defensive plays bored one to death but more effective, especially during playoffs. Injury rate is high and sometimes very dangerous. That's why there are soooo many protective gears, especially the goalies. With the speed, if a player fell head first toward the board because of losing his footing or hit by other players, he may paralysed and there are/were many suffered from this injury. Another major injury is concussion because of all the hitting. Basically, all NHL level players suffer various ankle, knee, hip, back injuries plus concussion thru their career. Most walk with a limp after they aged.

And I could never be a parent...I commend your patience.

It's a learning process, trust me.

Hockey is a very physically game. Two purpose for hitting, first cause the puck carrier losing the puck, second, the player receiving the hit will tire out. Basically, the more hit you receive, the more tire you will be further into the game.

My team Flames is not a team with many talents. They played physical and simple games. There are many hits in a game and worn out their opponents and make them weary. They grind you to death (like Nadal :tape: ) They dump and chase the puck into the end zone and fight for the puck there.

kalisita's team, the Penguins, has stars like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, they can play ballet hockey ;) They are beautiful to watch

Thanks and yes, the Flames is in Calgary.

Fingers crossed for today's weather and centre stage for Mr D tonight but it's not looking good.

Right now the TV is showing last year Sexy vs GOAT.

:wavey: We've got the MC final being repeated :bounce: But I shall shortly have to sacrifice it for the CL SF - unless we get the 2nd TV from the bedroom.

Can't see Nole getting on court tonight though.

I don't know why TTC is showing the warm up between Fish and Igor in court 1 instead of the Querrey/Seppi match on Stadium court
