Hi girls :wavey:

sorry to let you wait so long for the update today, but we have been out and it has been a nice evening ;)

Nando practiced today with Guga and in the eve with Safin. He seemed to be in a very good mood, and I hope so much he will have a chance tomorrow against Roger.
I will watch the match (of course), but I sit quite long up.
Sjoukje, do you want me to send an SMS???

I will keep you posted!!!

I work full time and try to learn some Spanish! And I find that hard enough! I guess it's not as tough as studying to become a teacher though.

I think learning spanish is hard. I need two languages for graduate school so spanish was my second. I studied for a year, and while I can read and write it fairly well (which is all I needed to pass the test), still cannot speak or understand it well at all. Its embarrassing...lol!...and I even spent 7 weeks last summer in Spain, and I swear it didn't help. Maybe some day, it will get into my brain... :)

Carlita
05-15-2005, 07:06 PM
OOOh I know exactly what you mean! I only had 26 lessons so far, and I'm amazed I can read quite a bit already. (with a little help from the dictionary here and there;) ) And if I have enough time to think, I can write it too. Still it's hard to speak.... Maybe we want to be too perfect??? I think too much when I wanna speak..... just throw out the words, the Spanish will understand you somehow

And trying to understand them when they talk.....:bolt: OMC! I try to listen to the Spanish interviews....and the only one I understand a little bit is Fernando :D and sometimes JCF & Feli. But the others.... pffff:help:

Hi how are you people :wavey:

NicoFan
05-15-2005, 07:41 PM
When I'm here in NY, I just throw out the words because people are used to having people from all different countries speaking many languages, and they're used to people speaking english and spanish with different accents. The one problem with that is that they never correct you. Plus people that come here from South American end up speaking a kind of Spanglish.

But in Spain, they correct you...lol! And they are very serious about having you speak it correctly...so I got very nervous and couldn't just speak without thinking about it. And my professor would say - don't think in english and tranlate it into spanish, just think in spanish...well easier said than done! lol!

And it was hard in Spain because I'm used to Mexican spanish...which is close to Spain's spanish but different enough to throw me off. I watch the Mexican soap operas here, and can understand a lot - but I get tapes from Spain and have trouble. And they had a show on The Tennis Channel with Feli here - couldn't understand most of what he said. Ditto the one they had with Rafa. And forget understanding Nico - Chilean spanish is totally different - can't understand one word of what that boy says. They cut off the endings of the words...makes me loco :-)

Unfortunately, I've never heard Fer speak - I've heard he has such a lovely voice too! :-(

my weekend has been pants :( my day was ruined because my floppy disk (with lots and lots of hard work on it) didn't work on my computer at home. So I had to go to somebody else and then I didn't have time anymore to work because I had to go to a party of some girl's communion... that was my day basically ;) but my mood hasn't suffered much :p

hey NicoFan!
That's interesting how you're learning to be an English teacher! I also wouldn't mind teaching English as a second language! I've been to a few seminars here where u can be qualified in like a week...it's like intensive courses that u have to pay through your nose for...i'd love to do it...just need to get the money! lol.
I'm going to be doing a linguistics unit next semester at uni that also helps with teaching english as a second language. When i was living in Spain I used to do it...albeit informally, cash in hand...not through a company or anything...and it was cool!
my part-time job here is teaching/tutoring french and german...so it was kinda good to actually teach english for once!!!

what i really want to do though is translation...i'm doing translation units in french and german at uni here and i really enjoy it. when i go back to live in spain next year i'm also thinking of doing a translation course there too!

have u ever had any experience in translation?

NicoFan
05-16-2005, 01:14 PM
I was going to do one of the quick courses for teaching English as a second language - the CELTA certification. But in the end decided to get my master's in it because while the entire world accepts that certificate, the US does not (figures we have to be pains in everything). And unfortunately decided to do it the long way (which I regret) - I'm getting a master's in English Lit and then will do the teaching classes for a second master's in teaching - just in case I ever wanted to get a PhD in English. I don't know what I was thinking when I made that decision because I highly doubt I will ever go on for a PhD.

Eventually I would like to do what you did - live in Spain and teach. And really don't want to do it in a school - again I would like to do what you did - just informally. And I have my undergrad degree in business and work in finance, and most of the students are learning English for business purposes, so I think it would work out okay - at least I hope...

Was thinking about translation - I thought when I got spanish down better after living in Spain for awhile, I could do that. Also am taking some journalism classes which I will be done with this summer because I figure that teaching alone won't pay the bills and can do some freelancing on the side. Would love to write about tennis....whoo hoo!

And wow you know french and german too...very impressed! I used to be able to read french fairly well, but I've lost it. Getting back into French is on my to do list for someday! lol!

yeah, I've heard of CELTA...the seminars I went to were for TESOL...as i say, i'd like to do one of them some day...but they're so expensive!

once you've got your degrees, you'll be so well qualified you won't need to worry about them!

I didn't actually go to live in Spain to teach English. We were just living there anyway and I was going to a school there...but i thought, while i was there, to get some extra cash, i'd just advertise english classes and i got a few students! lol

Journalism would also be cool! Especially a tennis reporter or a travel writer!

yeah, French is a nice language...it's quite similar to Spanish too...so if you can read one, you would learn to read the other quite quickly!

Jenrios - that must be a challenging job working with kids with dyslexia. I give you credit, you must have a lot of patience. And yes, English Lit - love it, love to read the classics, and all the new literature coming out.

Leigh - I think English is a rough language too. While I enjoy reading English literature, if I was going to pick the language that was the "world" language, I would have picked Spanish or Italian or French. They are such beautiful languages to listen to, the words are much more descriptive. Lady Carlita you're lucky because most people have trouble picking it up because the grammar has more exceptions than actual rules.

yeah Leigh...i have no idea what the obsession is with english apart from the fact ppl want to learn it cos it's the world language. as a language itself i think it's horrible too! though some literature can be nice. romance languages are definitely much better. germanic languages are icky.

finnish...omg i don't know how that makes sense to anyone!!! but oh well, it's not like many ppl are going to learn it...outside of finland it's hardly spoken so no point learning it really lol...better to learn more widely-spoken languages i think

Iza

Englsih is the easiest language really IMO ....Romanian is freakin' hard for non-latins cos of it's crazy grammar, Hungarian is  :bolt: , I've been learning German for 6 years and believe me...it's so hard I dunno much :o and errr  Dutch seems weird to me....I guess maybe Spanish is easy too  But I think English is quite easy (not too easy, but easier compared to others) And yeah, every1 speaks English today so it's useful.

It's not that he's mean... he's just making chances that don't really work! I used to have one day off every 4 weeks, to compensate my working hours from 40-38. Now he's taking those away and I can start at 9.00 instead of 8.30. What good does that do me? Or my work? I mean, my colleagues (the piano tuners) start at 8.00!! And since I plan their days..... me starting at 9,00 doesn't really help!

Also that one day every 4 weeks is good for me....I can recharge if you like! In the 10 years I've worked there, Iris and I never asked for ANYTHING, and now he takes this one little thing away! If his reasons were good ones, and it would benefite people, then I'd have no problem with it. He just won't listen! At the moment it's "my way or the highway". He expects us to give 300% and just takes takes takes!

Okay, enough;) I'm at home....no more work today! I'll go to the gym in a minute! http://smileys.******************/cat/7/7_5_131.gif Talk to you later chicas!!

English is actually one of the hardest languages to learn - mainly because it does not have a transparent alphabet. Take the letter a - it can say a as in apple, a as in game and a as in bath - and look at the word was. There may be 26 letters in the alphabet, but there are 44 phonemes. Part of my Masters was to research developmental dyslexia - trust be, English is is definitely one of the hardest languages to teach/learn. The dyslexic kids get so frustrated.

Jenrios

NicoFan

Lady Carlita - sounds like things that are happening here...taking away everything. That's why I want to work on my own - don't have to put up with that anymore. Of course, that's pressure to not having a paycheck to depend on. Hope things get better for you!

Jenrios - I have so many favorite authors! Let's see - of course, Shakespeare and Chaucer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Virginia Woolf (favorite feminist writer), Jane Austin (don't laugh - favorite overall...Jane!), Lawrence, Salman Rushie, the Brontes, Paul Auster (contemporary NY writer), Fielding, Toni Morrison (especially Jazz), Thomas Hardy. We don't read the DWEMs (dead white European - or American - males) much anymore in graduate school - a lot of emphasis on postmodernist writers and female writers. Favorite novel (right now) - Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things. Second favorite is Chile's own Isabel Allende's House of the Spirts (unfortunately translated - someday maybe I can read in espanol). And I'm going to get thrown out of grad school - but don't like poetry...or satire like Swift or Pope.

Wow, lots of linguists here, how cool! I just finished uni here, I am now 'MA' (master of arts). Although IMO it should be communications, as my major was 'communications and digital media'. I wrote my thesis on 'accent and contrast in Dutch and Romanian', so actually more linguistic than communication. Hated the process, really liked the subject. Right now I'm studying to be an English-Dutch (+vv) translator, and I'm really enjoying that! Also started a Spanish course, as I'd like to take on Spanish in translating eventually.

NicoFan, do you know if there are opportunties for Dutch/foreign ppl in translating in the states? I'd like to go abroad for a while one day, just wondering if there is any chance if I can find anything in the states.

Believe me, Dutch i way worse! I don't know how many phonemes we have, but probably about the same as English I'd guess... we also have different vowels depending on the surrounding letters, but then we also have combinations of vowels which have completely different sounds. And Dutch grammar usually has so many exceptions to the rules, that they can't even be listed as exceptions (like with French) But the reason we find English pretty easy is probably because we hear it and deal with it pretty much every day. In Holland, all the English/American movies and series are in English, with subtitles... and they make up about 90% of the programs  So you're already familiar with it, and you learn it bit by bit just by watching tv and stuff. But I agree... it's not really that easy to learn!

NicoFan, do you know if there are opportunties for Dutch/foreign ppl in translating in the states? I'd like to go abroad for a while one day, just wondering if there is any chance if I can find anything in the states.

Ooooooooooooh cool! Just English, or translating? Maybe we can start our own translating business one day :yeah:

I'm not sure - in NY we have people from 250 countries speaking over 150 languages so I would think you would find that there would be a lot of opportunities for translating. Plus the United Nations is here, and I know from their web site that they are always looking for translators. But I think you would have to be here right in the City.

I would love to have a translating business! It would be cool. I need to raise my skills in both spanish and french.

I bet there is a lot of competition here though because there are so many people from other countries. Everyone trying to do the same thing? I'll have to check into it.

Also there are courses in translating at NYU in the evenings and weekends - I think its mostly French and Spanish though into or from English. I'll have to check it out.

The thing is though... it's usually very hard to get a work permit for the US...

Gabyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy that bag is   :hearts: :hearts: !!!! I think that's the only bag that could ever make me give up my beloved bookbag (I always w/my bookbag tho it's kinda huge  )

Errrr so many translator things in here  I used to want to become a translator but as my German failed and I don't have time to take up another language (cos u need 2 speak 2 languages fluently to get in Uni) not to mention the huuuuuuuuuge competition (cos it seems being a translator has become trendy in Romanian  ) I just thought WTF...I might as well be a doctor ;) .

Yeah, I was just thinking of that too... I don't think it would cost 15 euros though... it's not a very big bag, and it's certainly not heavy.

Leigh, do you think you could figure out how much packaging & shipping would be (approximately)? Cause if it is a lot, there's really no point in going through all the hassle to let you send it to me  Oh, do you have paypal?
