Sure, SOME of the players do, but Fer is better than that! He is actually a pretty decent player with a lot of potential. But the thing is that all the partying is ruining it for him. It's about priorities. He should prioritize the tennis first, the partying should be second. And also, I don't mind him partying in itself, BUT it's unnecessary to party the night before a match! I have no doubt players party a lot, but then again, most players do not have the talent that Fer has, and therefore don't have much to lose, unlike Fer. He actually has a very good ranking to defend, and I hate to see him fail just because he parties too much. He's been in this game too long, he's been a tennis player for a long time. He should know better.

Well said. Fer has 4 years at the most probably to make the best of his tennis career. It's not like he'll never be able to be a party animal, he'll have all the time in the world for that after he's retired.

He says he wants Top 5 ranking and Grand Slam. Time to put your money where your mouth is Fer!!

I don't think it's his so-called partying lifestyle, a lack of confidence or lack of fitness - he played too much on clay, paid for it with injury and losing at Wimbledon, and now lacks match practice. It's not a crisis - yet.:yeah:

I think they should lock him in the hotel..escort him to the practice courts / match courts and back to the hotel again. God forbid the man has fun going to see the sights, a concert or have dinner with the family (and, oh no, enjoy himself a bit :o) how dare he even think about doing this stuff :o :o :o

He did play too much..and his body is letting him down here and there...Im sure he's mature enough to know what he wants in life and what he needs to do (or not do) to get what he wants.

Actually, Sokk, based on ranking, Fer isn't better than some of those players I saw. Top 10 players. Heard the same thing from a friend who stayed in the players hotel in Cinncy. I thnk Fer is better off quitting Twitter anyway. Keep his private life and thoughts to himself, and then he can avoid criticism. Plus, spending too much time on the computer has to be bad for him ;)again :yeah: He's being too open on twitter..... it will bite him in the ass soon.... (I hope it doesnt though...)

Fer has been with many girls he even did advertise KimKardishian's twiiter who already have 4 000 000 followers ... Oh well :(
and about what happened in DC i think that loss was just okay with him even Baghdatis got a match point his papa still smile .. So he need concern on Rogers cup later which has more points

I really hope Verdasco can pull it together and have a good run at USO. His form in Australia last year was awesome. It would be a terrible shame if he couldn't ascend to those heights again because he is unable, or unwilling, to discipline his insatiable thirst for a thriving social life. We all KNOW he can do it, so what's stopping him? I don't really get it.

He's always had problems with his leg - for years. And he plays a very powerful game. It's bound to take its toll on his body. I hope he sticks to his schedule - playing the 2 masters events and skipping events the week before the Open. And yes, of course he's allowed to have fun:) I guess it depends on what people mean by partying. I mean, he's not at Tiger Woods standard :haha: :haha: Late night concerts, dinner with friends and family and dating is harmless in comparison:)

Even if I, like many others here, really like to read Fers tweets, I also think he should reduce it a bit ;)
I really think he telles too much about his private life which makes him more vulnerable...I am very sure he did all the things he talks about in his tweets now (like having dinner with the family, going to concerts, enjoying time at a pool) also in the past, but as he didn´t communicate it, people could not explain for example looses with the things he did the evening before...

Also I think it´s not very smart of him to plan playing the tournament in Gstaad, but already before he has officially withdrawn to tweet that he is in Las Vegas enjoying life there...

For his own best I hope Fer will reduce his tweets in the future...like telling where he is and telling about matches is fine, but at the moment it´s just too match which is not good for him ..
But he is a grown-up, so I am very sure he will find this out by himself soon ;)

And main thing now: Vamos Fer against Edu!!! :bounce: :bounce:
I really hope they will show the match on livestream tomorrow, I really want to see that match ;)

Carlita
08-09-2010, 01:24 PM
Yeah Birte, I agree with you....he can reduce it somewhat  then again.... who are we to say he should? He's a grown man who can make his own decisions/mistakes.

He went to Vegas to train with Gil....so not just to party ;) he was also working on his fitness/tennis.

Off topic here for a moment.. I gotta say that I am LOVING Fer on Twitter! He's such a nice guy, and it's obvious that he loves his fans. I've never seen a tennis player being so open and honest and cool with his fans like Fer. He actually replies to his fans too! I gotta give him credit. It's impossible to hate that guy! :)

I have to admit though that I do get annoyed at him sometimes for his mental breakdowns in matches and for partying too much when he should be focusing on the tennis. However, all is forgotten when I read his tweets :)

Right on! I always say that it takes some patience being a fan of Fer. He can dissapoint us, but he usually surprises us with good play even after a rough patch like now. I don't remember him playing that well before the clay court season, but just look at how well he did there! And he considers HC to be his best surface, so this ought to be good. I have faith in him at least. I believe a QF is possible in Toronto, and I'd be very happy if he got that far:D

He can't reply to EVERYONE. That would be imposssible, doesn't mean he loves any of his fans more than others though.. It's just how it is. Also, we should be glad he's replying to his fans at all. I think it's a good sign that he really cares about us :) I have no doubt in my mind that come match day he'll be tweeting less, to concentrate. And that's how it should be of course :)

Terrible lost to Chardy! He got 5-4 serving for the match but be broken and lost in tiebreak. In the third set,Fer seemed tired and called the trainer. The third set was awful.Fer seemed to have injury in his leg.

Ales_Alessandra
08-12-2010, 05:03 PM
Yepi! After treatment he wanted to finish the points quickly and wasn't moving on court almost. 2 first sets were perfection quitly until 5/3. No DF either. But it came at wrong time, as usual. So from that point the match changed, I kind think he as already feeling something from the beginning, he was walking weird. However as he was playing ok and winning I totally forgot about that. Apparently he was indeed feeling something it got worst once he had to play the 3rd and try to forget that 5/3. Now we move on. Hopefully it's not serious and he will play Cincy. New Heave is not in the planes so far, but I guess everything can change!
And I do hope he is not so upset, his mood can play an important role at his performances on court.
Later!
:)

Will Fer be the 8th seed in the Cincy?

I think so, yes, because Delpo won't play, so he'll get the 8 seeding. He's ranked 9th right now and even though he lost points because he made the third round in Montreal last year, he should move up to 8th in the rankings next week when Delpo's points fall off, thanks to Roddick and Tsonga withdrawing and not being able to defend their points.

I was at the match and it was just...really ugly. He needs to learn to control his temper. First that outburst at Nice, and then his singles match, and in his doubles match yesterday with Feli, after getting a bad call, he went off again, cursing loudly in Spanish, called the line judge a 'puta niña' and of course they badly lost the match tiebreak because of a lot of Fernando's errors. His backhand, which was so good during clay season, looks really off and he's hitting more and more forehand shots out wide.

I don't know what's going on with him, but I hope he can get it together for New York. He really needs to defend his points there and he can't do that playing like he was yesterday. I love him, but he needs some serious help, both with his technical and mental game and he needs to control his temper. I was ashamed as a fan to watch him in his singles match AND his second round doubles match cursing like that. It left a very bad impression on some of the fans there. I talked to a couple ladies who said that they expected much better out of a tennis pro, in an environment where there are children who idolize these guys are around and he had lost a few fans because of his behavior.

One bad day, sure. But two? Three? He is a professional and he should know better. Just because other players do it doesn't make it acceptable. He is a very sweet guy, with fans, and with kids especially, but that doesn't mean his behavior on court should be excused, point blank, period. If anything, it means he ought to be more conscientious about it, considering how many younger fans he has. I know he was angry and frustrated with what were a lot of poor calls, but going on tirades like that isn't going to endear him to the crowds and it sure doesn't seem to bring anthing positive to his game.

I just realized, with the exception of the USO, Nando hasn't won more than one match in a tournament since the French Open. And in one of the matches he had to save like 3 MPs (in Washington VS Michael Berrer). Nando's in quite a slump unfortunately. :(

VerdASSco
09-30-2010, 01:51 PM
I think the US Open QF trumps a 'slump.' Obviously it would be better if he could push on from it but I don't think there's any need to panic. Everything's close in the race to the World Tour Finals with him just a tiny bit behind Roddick and a little in front of Ferrer. I think he'll qualify again personally - even if it means playing a lot of tournaments. And obviously with these points it's not about defending points.

Similarly, I like that Fer's fiery and it adds to the drama when players get angry and don't shake hands with umpires, etc - I only saw the very end of the match so I don't know why he didn't though.

I think the US Open QF trumps a 'slump.' Obviously it would be better if he could push on from it but I don't think there's any need to panic. USO QF was nice, but he didn't play amazing tennis throughout the tournament (except to beat Ferrer). Remember how lucky he was to even pass R1? Nando is able to physically outlast his opponents a lot of the time which is why 5-set format is very good for him.

And no consecutive matches won since the French Open with the exception of the USO is very telling.

Fair enough. I wish I didn't feel this way, but the USO has been the exception not the rule since French Open. If he loses early (ie. 1 or less matches won) then we have a crisis on our hands.

Jarah Mariano, some SI model. Brooklyn Decker (Andy Roddick's wife) apparently introduced them sometime before USO, they went on holiday in Ibiza together after.

I think he and Caro are just friends though, they've always sort of hung out, remember she was in his box last year during Indian Wells (with Camilla Belle )

I was in Valencia and saw Fers match against Simon
It was really no fun to watch at all. In the first set Fer didn´t have any chance...Simon was dominating all the rallies and Fer somehow had no chance to put pressure on him, but instead Simon let Fer run a lot and waited until he made the mistakes :(

The 2nd set was a little better from Fers site. He even had a break point to come back into the set, but he just made too many mistakes and even if he played some good points, he finished the rallies with very easy (too easy) mistakes.
It was really sad to watch Fer play like this and I think the crowd was really fair and nice, they were supporting him all the match even if he was really playing like total crap.

I think Fer should finish his season now, because in my eyes London would absolutely not make any sense for him the way he is playing atm. I think it would help him much more to have a little bit more time to rest a bit and concentrate and prepare for the new season early.
But that´s just my opinion....but then I am thinking if he looses like this against Gilles Simon, I don´t want to see him play Roger, Rafa or Djokovic at the moment....

I just saw his draw, and well.. it's not good news. Becker for the first round is going to be tough, but I think he has what it takes to beat him. Second round however, against Simon.. I have a feeling Simon is going to win.

Hi all :wavey:

Just wanted to let you know that Fernando will be playing doubles with Lleyton in San Jose!
I read it in a transcript from de SAP Open media conference on January 28. The tournament director was also present. So I guess they would know it if he needed surgery, right?

Q. Is the rumor I hear that in San Jose you plan to play doubles with Fernando Verdasco, is that going to be happening?
LLEYTON HEWITT: We're going to be playing in San Jose. I'm looking forward to it. It's nice to play doubles around the tournaments. And Fernando and I have never played together. So he actually asked me just the week before the Australian Open whether I was interested in playing doubles in San Jose. I took him up on the offer. It's going to be a lot of fun.
It's always nice to play with other quality players as well. And Fernando is a top player obviously. And I believe he won the tournament last year. So he's got good memories of coming back to San Jose.

I'm so proud of him for winning over Karlovic! karlovic is not an easy opponent by any means, but he still won in straights! And Nando has been struggling to beat him earlier. It seems like Nando is finally getting his confidence back and playing better and better, beating more and more difficult opponents that he couldn't beat at the end of last season. I'm very proud of him for bouncing back and making progress!

I guess his foot isn't bothering him as much anymore? Like I said, he seems to be playing much better now.

I wish he'd stop being such a tourney whore though. If he insists on refusing surgery for his foot he needs to manage it carefully. He's scheduled to play pretty much every week until RG and like last year it will probably come back to bite him in the ass. Hasn't he learned after what happened last year?!:banghead: By the time Wimbledon came around he was exhausted and his whole game was a mess for the entire remainder of the season. :o

I don't think Fer is a trophy whore - the way the ATP is structured, players are often forced into playing to defend ranking points. Any injury time-out is rewarded by a fall in the rankings.

Good luck to Fer!

FormerRafaFan

He was impressive over Delpo as well.. Played a wonderful first set. He did make some more errors in the second set, and missed a lot of his first serves. It looked like he was a bit nervous, maybe a bit loss of consentration. But he picked it up again towards the end of the second set, and of course the last game was nearly perfect. Delpo didn't even win one point in Nando's last game! Anyway, overall I think it was a pretty good match :)

What has impressed me the most in this tournament has been his ability to hold serve and not get broken. Well, he got broken in the Delpo match, but that was the first time. His fh dtl is amazing as usual too. He is returning pretty well. I think Raonic will have a hard time against Verdasco because Verdasco is a pretty good returner and has a decent serve as well, and is difficult to break. So he is a very bad match up for Milos, and I think Verdasco is going to win his second consecutive title in two tight sets today :)

That wasn't his point though.. I think his point was that bad scheduling isn't exactly helping when he has an injury as well.. He will probably be exhausted and it will ruin his game and I wouldn't be surprised if his foot started to act up again either.. he should have gotten the foot surgery, but then again, we all know how stubborn he can be!

I just wish he at least would be smarter about his scheduling if he refuses to get surgery. Scheduling is key if you want to prevent it from getting worse, and a tight scheduling isn't exactly helping much! I'm just hoping that his foot can hold out and that it won't get worse. I do fear we'll get another season like last year though. It's bound to happen as much as he's playing the upcoming weeks :(

I was rooting 50/50 because I didn't know who I wanted to win, but I really can't believe lost this with the chances he had, the far more experienced player, four set points in the TB...

Acapulco, imo, is especially idiotic. No word yet if he will, but if he plays Barcelona, then he will have already fulfilled his 500 limit (I'm assuming he'll play Davis Cup) by barely May. It's not like there aren't plenty of opportunities for him to get 500 events.

A schedule like San Jose-Memphis-week off-Davis Cup-Indian Wells-Miami-week off-Monte Carlo-Barcelona-week off-Madrid-Rome-week off-Roland Garros would make so much more sense. Of course he will probably play Bastad again instead of starting his hard court transition so he can improve his results in Cincy and Montreal, but whatever, I guess if seems to think he knows what he's doing, so he'll have to suffer the consequences of his own poor scheduling.

What some people seem to be forgetting here, is that Fernando won't play tennis for the rest of his life. He's already 27... He has a couple more years to go and then he'll feel it's time to retire. So you can hardly blame him for scheduling a lot of tournaments.

Given his rank, pretty much every single one of those 'random' tournaments mean BIG money. He gets a very generous appearance fee and you can't blame him for wanting to make as much money as possible for the time that is left. We are talking millions here over the course of just a couple of tournaments.

Also, if he happens to lose early in a tournament, he can go on to the next and stay in the rhytm of playing matches. Fine, sometimes rest is better. But if he feels he needs to rest, then he will. If he plays, it must mean he wants to play... for a reason. Be it money, be it something else. But he won't risk the next couple of years if he thinks he'll get injured. The news about 'broken bone in the ankle' was sooooo exagerated. He couldn't have walked, let alone played.

Sometimes we might feel that another decision is better, but it is just not up to us. Fernando makes the decisions, we have to be there to support him through whatever decision he makes. Whether he wins or loses a match. I thought that was the definition of a fan. Not just being there when he wins.

Also, the pressure he is under is immense. Can you imagine a whole stadium and people in 170 countries around the world looking at you and expecting you to make that shot? Not just getting that ball in, but play against a bloody good tennis player...returning his shots, running across the court trying to hit that ball... It's not the easiest job out there, you know...

Fine, the first set tiebreak was a sad event...but I wouldn't be able to get even one ball across that net. He did his best and that's all we can ask. Do you really think he did it on purpose? And it was a tiebreak...TWICE. So it's not like he got run over by Milos. He did very well getting to the final and he didn't give up without a fight. And that guy in the stands calling 'out'... should be banned for life.

Either way... Milos played very well and Fernando got to the final, which is an absolutely great result. I hope he can get more results like that. And I for one am proud to call myself a Verdasco fan.

Sorry, I know my above post was really harsh, and you'll probably just tell me 'get over it' and stuff, but this is such a hard loss to swallow (for some reason the toughest for me during my Nando fandom). There are very few matches in Nando's career where I feel like he had absolutely zero business losing but this was one of them.

A top 10 player in his fourteenth final, crumbling under the pressure of defeating a player who wasn't even top 150 a few short weeks ago and was playing in his final. Just everything about this loss was plain disastrous. Losses of Nando's always hurt, but this one for me was his most disappointing by far.

I've been going on about it all day and wish I could stop but I just keep getting frustrated again. :bigcry:

Good post Glenn. Just one thing: the pressure Nando is under is not unique to him or any other veteran of the game. At some point, he and his fans expect that with all the training he does with Gil Reyes Nando will have developed the mental resources necessary to prevail in tiebreaks, especially when playing an underdog. This was a heartbreaking loss for him and some frustration from his MTF fans is to be expected. He's had brilliant moments and rock bottom moments and hopefully he'll have learned something from this performance that he can use as the year progresses. :)

That collapse in the first set TB was something you see on juniors...or the WTA tour. Not the ATP top 10.

But I'm actually kind of looking forward to Memphis. His mistakes in San Jose final will be fresh in his mind so he should hopefully be ready this time.

You can be a fan of someone and still offer some criticism for their actions

He is one of my favourite players but I don't intend to sugar coat everything he does or says because of it. I think he has a very poor attitude lately when he loses and behaving like a spoiled child who has had a toy taken away is not the kind of behavior you want to see from someone who is supposed to be a professional. I don't care if you want to say it makes me a bad fan, but I'm not going to sit here and defend that kind of behaviour. He's a professional and he's an older, experienced player and should be setting an example for how to be a gracious loser, regardless of what one idiot in the crowd did. Fernando needs to stop having these mini-tantrums when things don't go his way, because all it does is make him look bad.

Yes,Fer is not as mature as you expected. But Fer is Fer,he is emotional. SAP final was his best chance to defend his title for the first time, then he lost. And some stupid person yelled at the match point. What you expected from him? Yes,he is not Roger or Rafa. He could not be so elegant or modest. And I don't want Nando to be portrayed that way :( I agree with piratesswoop saying that he is the older and more experienced one, so he should know better..

Sometimes we might feel that another decision is better, but it is just not up to us. Fernando makes the decisions, we have to be there to support him through whatever decision he makes. Whether he wins or loses a match. I thought that was the definition of a fan. Not just being there when he wins.

I agree with you to some extent. I'm a fan of Nando, always will be, despite his many (unnecessary) losses. I have been a fan through good times and bad times, and will continue to be a fan. BUT I think I also should be able to criticize him if I felt like he had his chances and could have won, but still lost. It's just so unecessary to lose 6 points in a row in a tiebreak when he had the set point! He should have won that set, but well.. he didn't.

Also, his behavior on court was appaling. I understand he got frustrated, but he just came across as a sore loser. The worst thing though was that he let it go to his head. That is what separates a top 10 from a top 5 player. The top 5 players have the ability to stay focused and not lose concentration and get too easily frustrated. Nando isn't mentally strong enough in that area, unfortunately :( And I think it was part of the reason why he lost. He could have pulled through if he just stayed focused instead of letting it go to his head.. sigh. I feel I have talked enough about this now. I think you know where I stand. I'm a fan of Nando, but aren't fans allowed to feel disappointed by this loss? I think we should be allowed to be disappointed. It will probably pass, but right now I'm just disappointed in Nando.

If you guys are shame of being Fer's fans, please go to love Roger or Rafa!! I can't believe you are claimed to be Fer's fan that can say these!!

There's a difference between being a hater and criticizing him. I am doing the latter, I will always support nando through thick and thin, but I will also be hard on him for losing matches he should have won. I'm not a tard who accepts anything from their hero. I speak up if I feel like it was an unnecessary loss.

And like I said above, it's not like I'm not a fan of him anymore, of course I am! I'm just very disappointed in him right now, blowing 4 set points is unbelievable. But, as mad as I am in him, I also still love him and I will of course support him in Memphis! Hopefully he'll get his revenge there ;)
