well that was then :p He managed 4 finals after that Raonic incident and hasnt been doing too badly in doubles.... :shrug: it could all be much worse......I just enjoy every second he's still playing....he's not one of the youngsters anymore (30 in November this year).... also hope he will somehow make the switch a bit to doubles so he might be around longer. Marrero is a good match for him :)

I disagree that singles could be much worse given his talent level and the results he should be having. That serve and that forehand - still so Goddamn beautiful :tears:.

But I do agree that giving up is so not the answer. If he's considering retirement this year, even if it's just from singles, he should at least wait out the rest of the season to see if a miracle happens and he finds his way out of this Mother of all Slumps :).

Unfortunately talent is not a given thing that makes you win everything or be top 5 most of your career. There are ( a lot ) of players with less talent than Fernando who win more often....so I dont agree that his talent should make him be better than the rest.....maybe, because of his talent, he could have gotten more out of it....

I doubt he'll quit now....he may not even retire this year....again, just because he turns 30 doesnt automatically mean that he will retire....also, the year's only just started :o he's becoming a Diesel....slow starter :D :lol: ;)

I want to deal with it but for me its hard because i had so many players that i lost respect to because of their work ethic. But i can never give up on Nando. I just cant, i wanted to but i cant. I wanted to give up on Rafa too, but that i cant either. Just like Ana as well, i wanted to give up on her but i cant. Yea i dunno, i just hope that he or she will surprise me, because my hopes are just muted at the moment.

Thanks Aaron and Carlita for reminding me of the fact of why i love this guy so much. My emotions just wouldnt let me deal with it. I struggled with disappoints and depression most of my life. I just need to calm down and stop making things too complicated and going to soon into conclusions. :hug:

I disagree that singles could be much worse given his talent level and the results he should be having. That serve and that forehand - still so Goddamn beautiful :tears:.

Well he was supposed to defend his title in san jose. But this kid name Raonic at the time was this pete sampras like player with a big serve. And it was a very close match indeed but at the end Raonic won that match. So after that match, Fernando at the press conference said that, "He should play on clay, thats where we play "real tennis". Or some shit like that. So everybody made a big huge deal outta what he said and thats when hell broke lose. Since then he results were just embarrassing for me to count afterwards. :tape: :o

But i also remembered other two horrific embarrassment losses. One to Gasquet and other to Soderling. :facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:
Thanks for filling me in on what happened in 2011. I do hope he doesn't quit - I've only recently become a fan from watching some of his older matches - singles and doubles. I wish that he still played with Lopez, they were great together. :)

I guess we sort of got an answer for his lack of results. Not saying it IS the reason, but I think it might be part of....

This result shows me that Fer shouldnt have been playing just yet.....He might have still lost to Nieminen, but with a slightly better score for sure :lol: It's not rock bottom...it's stupidity in thinking he was ready to play..... health before points Fer...HEALTH before points! :rolleyes:

People are hard on him because with great talent comes great expectation. Whether people should continue expecting great things from Fer or not is another matter. Personally, nothing surprises me anymore because he hasn't been playing that well for a couple of years now (2010 was the last year he made a slam QF or won a title!:eek:) and he's not getting any younger :shrug:.

Anyway....Fer's been doing his best....and yes, he's got the talent....but that doesnt mean it will always come out as you wish ;) It's not like he's a lazy player, coz trust me, he's far from it. Right now we should just hope he'll be able to play with 100% health and not expect him to win any majors......He'll be 30 this year....so this is (almost) it. I wouldnt mind if he continued his doubles coz he's doing pretty well with David :D That way he can play on a few more years. :D

I think it's time for people to lower their expectations and just be happy he's still playing and we can still go out and see him play live ;)

Far too soon for Fer to be playing. He should have rested - but there is always pressure to play. I rarely bother with GM anymore. Can't believe Fer will be 30 this year! Where's the time gone?????

It's a toughie, because he could move into doubles specialism, but underneath all the mental baggage he does still have a good game for singles and I'd imagine he's still keeping up fitness work. His serve and shot speeds haven't just evaporated. I think it's all in his head or whether he wants it enough.

It's hard to say whether moving into doubles specialism would be selling his singles game short or not. Obviously his results on paper would say it's a no-brainer, but if he has one last burst of determination to fight for every point as much as he can, he's still got the shots.

What makes it better is beating Raonic considering one of Nando's lowest moments (for me) was the loss to Raonic in '11 San Jose final after being 5-2 up in the first set TB (and then the semi-trash talk that followed the match), and then losing to Raonic again in the next week in Memphis just a few days later. That was possibly one of the things that has set his hellish slump of the last couple of years in full motion, so at least that completes one circle, even if his results continue to be bad after Madrid (fingers crossed this has turned his confidence around somewhat).
