I just watched the 1st Olympic event: women's soccer :clap2:
Germany absolutely dismantled China who are no mugs in women's soccer by a score of 8-0.

maybe the German team can again beat everybody and the USA to get Olympic gold after they won the World Championship last year :)

I am looking forward to the mens 100m, I dont think any of the British guys will get a medal, I fancy Powell of Jamaica or Maurice Greene (USA) to take the gold.

yeah, I followed a few meetings and resulst and I think these two are by far the biggest favorites...

somehow 100m is cool and really gets a lot of attention, although the duration of this final is just about 10 seconds

Yeah its crazy training four years for something over in ten seconds, whats crazier is if you get one false start then your out, so could be four years training to then not run the race lol

wow..I had no idea you only got one false start and you're out. That's kinda harsh. Can you imagine training for 4 years only to be disqualified for something so trivial like that. I guess if they've trained for 4 years, they shouldn't have a problem holding back..

yes, Argentina badly needs a GOLD this Olympics. I saw the 1st half of the Argentina vs Serbia & Montenegro football game on TV and the German commentator said that Argentina didn't win a gold medal at Olympic games since 1952. That's a long time.

So they would need it badly some time and they have a good football team and they are among the favorites.

yeah, this new rule to allow no false starts at all is really very rigid... maybe the officials have been just too pissed off how things in many races went when often three or four different people made false starts and this can be quite annoying because the other sprinters have to restart, go in their starting blocks and concentrate again every time

Drug scandal engulfs Greek Olympic heroes

Duncan Mackay in Athens
Friday August 13, 2004
The Guardian

The Greek athlete expected to light the Olympic flame today was at the centre of a doping scandal last night. Kostas Kederis, the 200m Olympic champion, is reported not to have shown up for an out-of-competition test and faces the humiliation of being banned.

Kederis and training partner Katerina Thanou, the 100m silver medallist, checked into the athletes' village in Athens yesterday and then both failed to appear for a scheduled test requested by the International Olympic Committee.

But late last night both were reported to have been injured in a motorcycle accident and detained in hospital.

Greek Olympic team spokesman George Gakis told Reuters the crash happened near Glyfada, the Athens suburb where the Greek team has its training headquarters.

Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, had summoned both athletes to appear before a disciplinary hearing today to explain why they missed the test.

Under international rules, such failure to show up is as serious as a positive test for banned performance enhancing drugs, and is punishable by a two-year suspension.

Kederis, 31, arrived at the village amid speculation that he would be given the honour of lighting the Olympic flame. He would have been the obvious choice; Kederis is the face of the games for many Greeks, his image adorns countless billboards, he was recently voted the most popular man in Greece, and he had been favourite to once again win the 200m gold medal.

A statement from the Hellenic Olympic Committee said: "The IOC doping control representative came to the office of the chef de mission, Mr John Papadogiannakis and stated that he was looking for the athletes Kostas Kederis and Katerina Thanou in order to proceed to sample collections, but he did not find the athletes in their rooms. Consequently, he handed over two doping control notifications ... Yiannis Stamatopoulos, [head of the Greek track team], explained that the athletes left the village, in order to collect personal belongings."

KEDERIS and THANOU may not be able to leave hospital

ATHENS, 13 August - Konstantinos KEDERIS and Ekaterini THANOU will likely not be able to attend the Disciplinary Commission's hearing on their alleged anti-doping violation this afternoon, as according to medical sources, the two Greek athletes have suffered cuts and bruises on their arms and legs and need to remain in hospital.

KEDERIS is sporting a neck brace, while THANOU is weak and has dizzy spells.

An official medical report by the KAT Hospital's administration is expected around 1 pm today.

tzz I hope they won't be able to take part in the competitions either
The whole thing is obvious I think

Anyone here know who Alexei Nemov (men's gymnastics) is? I just found out that he must have not retired after Sydney because NBC just advertised him as competing for the Russian team tonight. It's hard enough to follow gymnastics in the in-between...let alone if your all-time favorite might be from another country :p .

I first saw Alexei compete around '95 or '96 and not only did I think that he's a great gymnast but he also has an awesome personality when he competes. I had heard that he was going to retire after Sydney but i'm so glad that he didn't :bounce:

Greeks expel drugs scandal pair

Denis Campbell, sports news correspondent
Sunday August 15, 2004
The Observer

Two Greek sporting legends were last night suspended from the Athens Olympics amid suspicion they faked a motorcycle accident to cover up a missed drugs test.
Sprinters Kostas Kederis and Ekaterini Thanou were removed temporarily by the Greek Olympic Committee amid growing anger their behaviour had brought scandal to the sporting showpiece.

The suspension is set to be extended for the duration of the Games when the International Olympic Committee meets tomorrow to consider their behaviour. Sweden's Olympic team have threatened to pull out if the pair - long suspected of taking performance-enhancing substances - are not excluded.

One of the most bizarre sagas in sporting history took another twist when Greek police said they were investigating the alleged crash but could find no evidence or witnesses to suggest it had actually occurred. The pair's coach claimed they had suffered a smash when speeding to the Olympic Village to give drug samples.

The affair is a mixture of mystery, confusion, broken rules and high farce. Under IOC regulations, the test the runners missed last Thursday is likely to count as the same as passing a positive sample and could lead to them being banned for two years.

It is a calamity for the Olympic hosts, whose efforts in staging a memorable opening ceremony in front of a huge global TV audience have now been overshadowed.

Kederis, 31, and Thanou, 29, became national heroes after surprisingly winning the gold medal in the 200m and the silver in the 100m at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Kederis has had roads and even a ship named after him.

The circumstances surround ing the two missing their tests, 24 hours before the opening ceremony, are still shrouded in confusion. There is a growing belief that the runners faked the smash to try to divert attention from the fact that they had deliberately avoided giving samples to the drug-testers.

Kederis may now retire rather than fight disciplinary proceedings which look inevitable. Until last Thursday, he was Greece's most popular man. Now he, and Thanou, are seen as traitors.

Greeks are united in contempt for the pair bringing such shame on their country at an event they hoped would mark its triumphant emergence as a modern European country. 'They should be strung up,' said Litsa Sarantou, a bee keeper. 'No,' added retired bank employee Nassos Kafezopoulos. 'They should be shot.'

The Greek media is equally hostile. Kathemerini, a daily broadsheet, yesterday called the saga 'a debacle, a scandal, a fiasco' - which is even more embarrassing given that Greece had promised to thwart such abasement and organise the cleanest Games in modern history'.

Both runners missed a previous drugs test, when they told testers they would be in Crete but went to Qatar, and Kederis failed to submit to a test recently in Chicago.

The IOC has introduced the toughest drug-testing regime since the Olympics restarted, in Athens, in 1896.

Its hilarious! There's an attitude-packed Greek guy (he's little) playing this tall Swede. The greek has a headband on!

 OK I need to edit my message. Table Tennis can be pretty exciting. Kinda like a doubles match, when they're all at the net... Except on a smaller court, and one guy each side  Go the Swede!!!! :worship:

table tennis is an awesome intelligent sport... whereas in tennis it's mostly good for you if you have length in your shots trying to hit as close as possible to the baseline, you must concentrate in table tennis to keep your balls short (mostly with underspin) or otherwise your opponent attacks your long balls with a topspin or a smash. In pro table tennis between two offensive players everything is about who is pressured/has to play the first long ball.

No other sport features such a fast ball on such a short distance of just three meters. Awesome sports where you needs tons of coordination, feeling for the ball spin, quickness and ability. too bad table tennis often still gets too much disrespected.

I dunno if its because I'm from a country with little or no interest in the sport, but I always got the impression it was just geeky people that played . I've got to admit, that was a pretty thrilling match, and it was helped by:
a) the appearance of a handsome Swede ;)
b) the Swede won :)

If its on again I'll be looking out for it. There were quite a few people in the stands :)

Ok... this will be a really bad generalisation, but imagine at school, the tough guys would play basketball or football, and the smaller, nerdy kids would play table tennis or chess. I mean, like its not a big tough sport, but one of skill.

gosh i watched judo last night and was it a stomach twister for me. this guy from russia (not marat) dmitri i think had his left arm broken in the semifinal match by the greek guy who eventually won gold in the -81 kg division. but he has to play the bronze medal match that same day, gosh was it painful to watch him, but he miraculously won and he even got his eyebrow bleeding. boy was it dramatic! plus he was kind of cute too. best ive seen from the olympics 04 so far.

believe there are a lot of guys playing basketball who are more agile, quicker and faster than most handball players

How is that the case when handball is the second fastest team sport after ice hockey in the world and throwing of the ball in the men's game when they shoot can reach up to speeds of 160km/h?

Considering there are more movements required by handball players, than basketball players and the rules are more flexible in handball than basketball, would contradict that theory of basketballers being more agile than handballers.

I have played them both and found handball much more taxing and required more work than basketball.

rassklovn, your point is taken, but please read what I said:
I did not say that the sport basketball itself is a fast sport (yes, icehockey is a much faster teamsport, but actually I was talking about that there are enough basketball players that are better athletes, that are faster, more agile and quicker than most handball players.
Of course that's not true if you take a 7foot guy with 300 pounds as an example compared to an ordinary handball player.

Also the fact that handball features shots up to "speeds of 160km/h" isn't part of my point as I was talking about the players and not the speed of the game or of shots.

I understand where you are coming from.

The movement thing well yes there are some basketballers who would be more agile than handballers, but they would be an exception, as they are different games, even with the rule similarities, require different movements, the faster pace of game has to effect the different qualities.

Handball has less dribbling, the passes need to be quicker and there is more off the ball running in handball as they have to be quicker. I highly doubt the average basketballer would be more agile than a handball goalkeeper.

Neely, Basketball has more timeouts than handball does, and how when the speed of the game is much faster, and handballers have less time to react and don't have the timeouts and can't be slow as they would have passive play called, then how could basketballers be better athletes as a whole.

yes, Marc, I agree with you. Yes, of course, there are also plenty of not so agile basketball players (because they are heavy and around 210cm tall) and that the (mostly smaller) quick, fast and really agile guys are rather the exception compared to handball.

But very agile and quick basketball players exist, and not just a few ones, and that was what I said ;)

Is that what you said? Initially you were saying that they were better and more agile than handball players on the whole, and that's not right, as the reasons I explained and rassklovn explained before, why this is not the case at all. As I said where I come from the guys not good enough or fast enough handball, end up playing basketball.

Marc Rosset, to check what I said, please see post #189 in this thread

and even in #226 I didn't say that basketball players are in general more agile than handball players without exception I even admitted that it can be quite the opposite, depending on what sort of player you are looking at.

This post, these players you have mentioned are in the minority, they exist but that's not the majority of basketballers would not be at the same level as handballers, and the reasons have already been explained and not just a height thing at all.

God, could the USA basketball team suck even more?? :( Is it possible. I mean losing emarrasingly to Puerto Rico, and then just barely getting by Grecce. I would love to see Larry Brown win a NBA title AND the Olympic Gold in the same year, but it aint going to happen, unless they pick up their play DRAMATICALLY. And they seriously do need some outside shooters. They should of balanced out the offence more, rather then just relying on inside shots, because their opponents are just going to clog the middle. I still have faith in USA though! :D

you're very correct, instead of looking who has the coolest shoe contract and who can dunk the basketball the best, they should have thrown out some high leaping kids who just want to fucking dunk the basketball and should have picked up two or three fundamental spot-up shooters with real three point range like Allen, Barry, Hoiberg.... and this fucking cheap zone defense would be punished like hell because these guys are able to knock down the threes from outside and when the defenders have to come out to guard their men at the three point line Duncan, Boozer and other insider players have more room to kill them in the paint.

Jogy

I see the game against Puerto Rico too and I do not understand why all these high payed pro players can not put the ball in the basket from for three points.
What I don't understand even more is that the commentator mentioned in international basketball rules the three point line is about one meter closer to the basket than in NBA like they are used to. :retard:

Neely
08-18-2004, 11:07 AM
yes, that's right with the difference in three point distance between NBA and international level. The three point line is closer to the basket, but that doesn't neccessarily mean that it's easier to score a three point shot. That depends on the situation. Often a typical situation for a three point attempt is an inside-outside game. One team is trying to exploit an inside matchup, a double team is needed what means one defender from the arc helps out inside for a double team. Then if you move the ball back the three point line you have the disadvantage that the defender has a shorter way to go back to his "real" match-up what gives the shooter less space and less time. It's also true for much more plays, so you see that an open three point shot but farer away from the basket (like in NBA) can be more useful than a shot one meter closer to the basket but with your defender in your face.

Also the US team doesn't have any good sharpshooters from outside in their team. Most of them are one-on-one players, slashers, inside players or at best decent mid-range shooters. And if they can't buy the respect of the defenders by hitting from outside, the opposing team will give the US team again and again open 3pt shots because they know the chances are quite good they miss and because they can concentrate on shutting down the US inside game.
