Really looking forward to clay season this year, hard court season has dragged on too long imo...

Vamos Paulo, this is your season to shine again. :)

The Monte-Carlo draw :tape:, Paulo is in the second quarter:

[4] MURRAY, Andy GBR vs BYE
HANESCU, Victor ROU vs QUALIFIER
QUALIFIER vs BERDYCH, Tomas CZE
QUALIFIER vs [14] CILIC, Marin CRO

Draws are getting worse from tournament to tournament this year, don't you think?
Okay, maybe it's just the first impression... Vamos Paulo!! :rocker2:

tufani

Paulo also plays doubles here with Marc! He actually was to play MC doubles with Jeremy, but they couldn't make it to the main draw due to low rankings.

[8] COETZEE, Jeff (RSA)/KERR, Jordan (AUS) vs BYE
MELO, Marcelo (BRA)/SA, Andre (BRA) vs DJOKOVIC, Novak (SRB)/TROICKI, Viktor (SRB)
LOPEZ, Feliciano (ESP)/VERDASCO, Fernando (ESP) vs ANDREEV, Igor (RUS)/SAFIN, Marat (RUS)
BYE vs [4] BHUPATHI, Mahesh (IND)/KNOWLES, Mark (BAH)

[5] SOARES, Bruno (BRA)/ULLYETT, Kevin (ZIM) vs BYE

Marc is actually a decent partner, in my opinion

Nalbandian... hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I haven't been following tennis very closely this year. Where has Nalbandian been?
Honestly, I thought Paulo could draw worse

tufani
04-12-2009, 11:46 PM
Well, Nalbandian won Sydney this year, made the semis of Buenos Aires, had a chance to beat Rafa in IW (5 MPs), but lost in the end. And then in Miami he got trashed by Troicki 1-6, 3-6. You know David, he can do great when no one expects it from him and vice versa.
So Paulo has been training in Monte-Carlo for a week now! Lets hope he got used to the surface and it won't be a problem in his first round match.
The fact that he has no points to defend is a bit relaxing tbh. It will be absolutely great if Paulo gains some ranking points from those Masters 1000 events.
He's not sheduled to play tomorrow (I mean, on Monday), so Tuesday it is, for both singles and doubles matches, I guess

Ome

I see... I've been missing a lot

Well, I do like Nalbandian as a player, but I hope he's out of shape here :rolls:

tufani

Me too, Jai

OOP for tomorrow:

COURT DES PRINCES start 10:30 am
[Q] F Fognini (ITA) vs T Berdych (CZE)
[12] D Nalbandian (ARG) vs P Mathieu (FRA)
F Lopez (ESP) vs [10] D Ferrer (ESP)
M Safin (RUS) vs [WC] L Hewitt (AUS)
[WC] M Gicquel (FRA) / P Mathieu (FRA) vs L Arnold Ker (ARG) / P Cuevas (URU)

Paulo practiced with Rafa yesterday for about an hour (11-12 AM).

I for myself don't mind since there are livestreams of both courts (and I actually prefer the Court des Princes because I find it more fun), but they should have put his match on Center Court, it's one of the most awaited matches of the 1st round imo.

PinkFeatherBoa

Vamos Paulo 2x.

I agree that it should be on Central but there are a lot of good matchups today. Oh well Court Princes has a nice atmosphere, I like that court fine for the occasion too. Paulo can have Central next round!

Nalbandian takes the first set, though Paulo had some real chances to go 5-all (Nalby served 3 doubles in the last game!). Oh well, at least Paulo plays better now compared to the start of the match. Keep it up!

Some kind of strange pressure? This tournament isn't even located in France, technically

I watched Gael and Gilles earlier. They all, including Paulo, did face some decent opponents. (Same thing goes to Beck. I saw his match in Bangkok and he's very good!) But I'm a bit disappointed with how they performed considering how much time they had to prepare. Sometimes they looked bored, impatient and their shots were out of sync.

Pressure? It is strange if so! More like lack of matches. Gael was awful today. I've seen just the first half of Gillou's match, he was coughing a lot. Some kind of allergy maybe? Marc and Florent are the last Frenchies standing...

Later on Paulo will play his doubles match

Time to get in some matches on the doubles court, need to build up the game and the confidence!

Just saying... The Frenchies don't seem to do well here. I blame it on some invisible pressure  Honestly, I felt sleepy watching their matches. That doesn't happen very often! Maybe I also need some time to ease up to the clay court season

I also think that Paulo played better in Monte-Carlo compared to last month's tournaments. He badly needs some match practice to pull it all together, so some luck with the draws would be nice :p

Well, maybe it is pressure, Jai. But most of the guys had some health issues... Still, 6 out of 7 Frenchies lost their first round matches, sad tournament

Paul-Henri Mathieu, the No. 7 seed from France, cruised past Algerian lucky loser Lamine Ouahab 6-3, 6-2. World No. 39 Mathieu, who was a semi-finalist (l. to Bolelli) on his debut in Munich last year, broke serve three times from seven opportunities and surrendered just 11 points on serve in the 66-minute match.

The 27-year-old Mathieu will look to win back-to-back tour-level matches for the first time since reaching the semi-finals in Brisbane (l. to Verdasco) at the start of the season when he faces Denis Gremelmayr in the second round. The German advanced when Argentine opponent Martin Vassallo Arguello retired with a lower back injury when trailing 1-5 in the first set.

Thanks Fran for posting the link in Jeremy's thread, you can watch Paulo's second round match in Munich here (http://www.tennislive.tv/turniere/bmw-open/bmw-open-by-fwu-ag-gremelmayr-vs-mathieu) :wavey:

Paulo had a couple of chances to break Youzhny's serve early in the match, but missed them all. Seems like a good serving day so far! 2-all now, Vamos Paulo!! :armed: :rocker2:

Paulo had some chances but didn't convert them, and Youzhny played really well today. Paulo is gaining some form though, which is great to see! Madrid draw will be out tonight according to the tournament's thread.

Happy because Paulo's shots really came together, even the serve :yeah: We can see the hard work he puts in out there.
Sad because he's still struggling to get the results he 'deserves' :awww:

From RMC:

PHM : « Il y avait quelque chose à faire »
En quart de finale du tournoi de Munich, Paul-Henri Mathieu s’est incliné face au Russe Mikhaïl Youzhny (7-5, 3-6, 6-3). Une nouvelle défaite pour le Français face à celui qui l’avait battu lors du match décisif en finale de la Coupe Davis 2002 ;

Paul-Henri Mathieu : « Je l’ai joué quelques fois depuis 2002. »

Oh, Jai, sounds so familiar! No chance to get a faster connection then?

I saw him training with Jérémy in the morning and I already noticed then that he was coughing a little bit. He looked OK to me during the match, though, at least during one set and a half. Then I left because Mr. Simon was finally training, so I stayed at the practice courts for a while and when I came back, it was already in the 3rd set, Paulo called the physio, they talked a little bit and he retired immediately. It felt a bit unusual coming from him. I'm sure he was not fit since I had noticed it during the training session already, but it also looked like he didn't feel like playing anymore.
The match was quite entertaining, both guys were damn inconsistent, but there were some spectacular rallies, I enjoyed the match. There were some ugly errors, but what I saw really wasn't bad. Nice fight in the TB to come back from 0-4.
There was some drama too when a line judge got injured in the 1st set because Fognini hit him unintentionally by chasing down a ball (the courts are very small, there isn't much room behind the baseline). It looked really bad, the poor man was bleeding a lot.
I uploaded some pics here, but I have more, I'll upload them later:

Thank you so much, Fran :D

Didn't Paulo once retire in a similar situation against Santoro last year? Well, I would imagine that it's a combination of the illness AND the fact that he was already down a break in the third. No need to push his luck. And also, he knows his fans won't be too hard on him ;)

 Paulo looked amazingly nice in that red shirt! Like a school boy! :rolls: :bounce: And me love the haircut! ^^

Truc
05-13-2009, 08:06 AM
Yeah, he probably could have kept playing a couple more games (people around me who didn't kow about his illness were surprised to see him retire), but thought there was no need to because he was never going to win anyway. I can understand him too if he didn't feel like being bagelled by Fognini who is quite obnoxious!

But the match actually reconciled me with Fognini who drove me nuts in his two matches against Gilles. He's annoying and really weird, but it makes him entertaining to watch. I was half-dozing during some matches, but not during Paulo-Fognini! What a rollercoaster. When one guy looked a bit in control, you knew he could always collapse 30 seconds later without any apparent reason, so it kept me awake. Jim-Chucho was much more boring.

Courteau kept saying "Allez Paulo! C'est bien, ça, Paulo!" I guess Paulo needs that, Champion did the same when I saw him in Hamburg, after every point, I find that so annoying after a while. I think I have a pic of the people with Courteau, I didn't know all of them. I thought Barbarin is Paulo's physical trainer now, but he wasn't there.
Champion was watching too at the end.

I found Paulo very error prone on his BH side, some shots were really landing in the bottom of the net. But I can't say much about his game, sorry.
It was a bit shocking to see him waste his lead when he was one break up at the beginning of the 2nd set, I was there, it was before I left for the practice courts, but I have no idea how Fognini broke back, he really looked "finished" this time and Paulo brought him back into the match somehow.

But there definitely was something wrong with him, you can see a pic of him sitting on his chair in training in the morning, it was a weird moment, they were practicing normally and out of the blue, Paulo went to his chair and stayed like in the pic for ever. Without saying anything, without any warning. Courteau, Jim, Jim's coach looked a bit  , everybody was waiting - and then after a while he stood up and resumed the training.
He probably felt a bit dizzy. But he doesn't say anything, so it looks weird!
He's the exact opposite of Gilles who can't stop talking and comments his every single move in training (which is a bit annoying too, I felt like telling him "Oh shut up already and focus on what you're doing!" after a while).

So Paulo!

It's sort of his personality, I think. He left things unsaid too many times. I like that he doesn't like to make any excuses. But there's a big down side to it. People might not understand the reason behind his decision... And that can lead to harsh criticism.

I've never seen Gilles' training, but I think I might like a talkative version more

Mathieu's coach also does that. It's really nice. :) Courteau :yeah:

I watched two of his matches in the past few weeks, I thought there were too many ups and downs in one match. He could come up with brilliant shots for half a set or even a set, then he would start making errors. It's a downhill from that point.

The funny thing is that a lot of people were doing it too, I found that really striking during his match.
Some people around me were also shouting all the time "Allez Paulo!", "Super, Paulo!" More than with the other players I've seen in Madrid.
Obviously a lot of people feel like being supportive with him during his matches. I'm not saying he was drawing a big crowd, but his few supporters were quite vocal and had this very special way to encourage him, constantly, each time he had played a great point or looked like he needed some help.

"ups and downs" is the expression I was looking for yesterday evening to describe his match. But the brilliant shots are great, it's not like he has completely lost his game. He doesn't need much to turn it around. Last time I saw him was in IW and Miami and I found those matches more worrying than yesterday (especially the Murray one).

Fran :worship: thanks for keeping an eye on Paulo for us!

Jai, I agree that it is so Paulo not to say anything about injuries/sickness :awww: but I like that about him, too.

I'm laughing about the Vocal Supporters at his match, I actually get the impression he attracts them in small, loyal groups (has been the case at Wimbledon as well). I guess us initiated ones, like to show that we know what a wonderful person and player Paulo is! It's nice to hear he's receiving this type of support- he deserves it! Also makes me feel less of a fool for being such a vocal nutter at his matches. ;) Thumbs up to Courteau for all his encouragement, as well.

I feel his game is getting there too, which is really nice and encouraging leading into RG, just need to find some darn consistency now (and fix whatever is stopping him winning with the big leads he gets). I'm so glad the serve appears to be fixed.

Good to know he's getting in more match practise at that exhibition, Bien Joué Paulo.

Who did you see play?

They are in the pictures thread now ;)

I saw the match between Bartoli-Garbin and the first set of Federer-Acasuso. After that I left Chatrier because I wanted to see Andy Roddick play (I've been a huge fan since 2003) on court 2. There was a huge line to get in.. so 2 hours later we finally got some seats and I saw the last set of Clement-Rochus, that was a really exciting match! Although I wanted Arnaud to win . While waiting in line I met a group of americans and after the Clement-Rochus match we managed to get seats all together.. A lot of people left and then all of a sudden we we're in the second row! Right behind Richard Williams . I couldn't believe how close I was to Andy! The match was really nice, he played really well and his serve is so impressive in real life . We cheered on him pretty loudly  and after the match we all got his autograph :D. It was definitely one of the best days of my life!

ATP World Tour No. 39 Paul-Henri Mathieu snapped a four-match losing streak against Mikhail Youzhny by defeating the Russian 7-6(4), 7-6(4) on Wednesday in the first round of the MercedesCup, an ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tennis tournament in Stuttgart.

Mathieu twice trailed by a break of serve in the first set, but fought back on both occasions to force a tie-break – which the Frenchman then won 7-4. A reverse of fortunes in the second set saw Mathieu twice lead by a break, before being taken to a tie-break by the resilient Youzhny. However, unlike the Russian, Mathieu was not made to pay the price for his squandered leads and won the tie-break 7-4 after two hours and 11 minutes. Youzhny had defeated Mathieu in all four of their previous meetings, most recently on clay in the Munich quarter-finals in May.

“It was a very tough match,” remarked Mathieu. “I had played him four times before and never won so I’m happy that finally I won a match against him. I wasn’t able to practice much in the last few days because I was a bit unwell and that made me more relaxed before the match, which helped."

The 27-year-old Mathieu improved to an 18-17 match record on the season, highlighted by a semi-final finish at Brisbane (l. to Verdasco) to add to his quarter-final showing in Munich. The right-hander is making his third appearance in Stuttgart and will look to reach the quarter-finals for the first time when he takes on Fabio Fognini on Thursday.

Looking ahead to his next challenge, Mathieu said: “He’s (Fognini) a tough player. He’s playing really well on clay so I think it will be again a tough match.”

Long time coming, that first win. :hatoff: Paul.

Fognini is a winnable second round. Go on a run, Mr. Mathieu!

Unusual for the ATP site to actually update on Paulo. Must be a good sign, merci for posting it, Olga.

Paulo plays 1st tomorrow, 10.15am CET. Vamos Paulo, would be nice to get something going here.

Good win Paulo! Nice way to pull out a close one!

I was so excited about Gasquet's decision that i forgot to pop in and say congrats to PHM and his fans (Youzhny is far from one of my favorite players so I was particularly happy). Hope he can follow it up with a few more wins.

Thanks Schu!

Paulo retired against Fognini at 4-6, 1-4 because of dizziness. :awww:

I was watching the match on the poorest quality livestream ever but you could tell from the start he was just not fit to play even on bad stream. I expected this to happen, especially since he got given 1st match, was really hoping that they would have given him a later match so he had more chance of not being so ill. Poor Paulo!! :awww: I hope he's feeling better and ready to go next week in Hamburg because he was finally finding some reasonable form again.

I was glad on my stream there was only one camera angle, so at least I didn't get to see close ups of his tired, sick looking face.

I'm in Hamburg today, just saw Paulo practicing with Youzhny. I asked him at the end if he feels better and he said he's OK.
He was alone, no Courteau
And I guess you already knew the answer by now since it's the question I was supposed to ask 2 years ago ^^, but I also asked him if he speaks German since he's Alsacian - no, not at all.
He was very nice, all smile.

Thanks for the updates, Fran :DHe was smiling when I talked to him, not during his training. I saw him again later, but I've forgotten who he was practicing with this time. He seemed to train normally, I think he's fit again. His practice sessions always look so intense compared to Gilles'! Still no coach in the evening.
I'm back in Berlin, I'll go again during the week, but I don't know on which day yet.

Not a bad draw in Hamburg, Korolev/Riba for the first match. Hopefully, Paulo has fully recovered from illness! He and Jim drew second seeds this time.

Thanks a lot for the info, Fran! I wonder were is Courteau then...

Thanks for the updates, Fran. Glad to hear he seems fine in training. I wonder where Loic is though, hope he'll be there at his matches.

PHEW, that one was extremely close! :scared: Paulo was down a break in the third set, down a minibreak (1-3*) on a TB. So glad he managed to pull through! :rocker2: :woohoo:
