All that JAZZ

I'm not sure was any thread existed on this forum about jazz, I haven't find any.

Lately, maybe because the spring is in the air, I'm turning back to the high school days when I discovered the jazz clubs, where, in the dark, sitting round the table, drinking some black wine - you're listening to the jazz...

What are your favorite tunes or jazz lyrics? Musicians or vocals?

For the beginning, I'm going with Thelonious Monk's tune "'Round midnight" and few interpretations:

I actually love Sarah Vaughan's interpretation, but didn't find the right one.

It begins to tell,
round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well till after sundown.
Suppertime, I'm feeling sad;
but it really gets bad,
round midnight.
Memories always start round midnight.
Haven't got the heart
to stand those memories,
when my heart is still with you,
and old midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
does it mean that our love is ending?
Darling, I need you, lately I find
you're out of my heart,
and I'm out of my mind.
Let our hearts take wings
round midnight, midnight.
Let the angels sing,
for your returning,
till our love is safe and sound
and old midnight comes around.
Feeling sad,
really gets bad
round midnight...

Jazz is one of my favorite styles, even though I'm more of a fan of the fusion sub-genre...

The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Weather Report
Return to Forever
Miles Davis

Great thread idea.

Bascule, I love what I've heard of Dakota Staton. My other half got an old scratchy copy of her The Late Late Show and she tears it up on the song "Broadway." People can't sing like that anymore.

Gu, it's funny you mention Mahuvishnu. I don't know them well, but the other day I was playing Wicked Witch (http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/4739) for a friend (the one who is a prog head), and he said my favorite track ("Vera's Back") was very Mahuvishnu. So I wanna hear them. I'm sure you'd want me to listen to anything other than Lo Borges (first album and Nuvem Cigana), which is what I'm listening to now. Can't help it, "A forca do vento" is gorgeous.

My guy's also listening to Miles Davis these days. He's strayed from listening to In A Silent Way and the other great stuff to enjoying the wackness of Davis' "Human Nature" cover. I'm not sure if I can go there. Miles Davis gave the funniest interviews. In one late in life he was asked what his favorite thing to do was and his answer was along the lines of "Watch white people act stupid on TV."

Anyway, jazz. I'm on a Sun Ra kick. I love Alice Coltrane. Pharoah Sanders' Live at the East is something else.

Sublime singing: Jimmy Scott on The Source, Billie Holiday doing "I Cover the Waterfront" at Carnegie Hall, Esther Phillips from start to finish on Burnin'. Here's Esther singing "Release Me" at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqL0JEwKhbs) -- she kills it.

And for the others, the best thing Brazil has ever done in music - Bossa Nova.

In brazil there´s a musical style also called choro, which is from XIX century. It features flute, and piano and some regional thing on it.
This is a traditional brazilian choro, which reminds as a regional style of jazz.
This is basically the music I used to listen and my grandpa´s house, a true choro fan.
