The official schedule :

Juin :

> Gerry Weber Open (Halle) – Du 8 au 14 Juin

> Wimbledon (Londres) – 22 Juin au 6 Juillet

So he chose Halle as his only grass tournament before wimbledon. Sorry for his english fans next to the queens ().

Federer is doing Halle too every year, isn't it ?

Whatever, we have many hopes for this grass season :D

Many thanks MacArthur for posting his grass/clay schedules. The clay season is quite packed, and I pray that he will stay healthy until the grass season.

I know I keep on harping about Jo's potential on grass. That's because this is a surface that few of the active players can dominate. Federer was king for a long time, and ironically Nadal has achieved supremacy there.

Jo has the perfect kind of game for grass: the powerful serve, sublime volley techniques, huge forehands and speed of movement. He had an impressive run to 4th round in 2007, at a time when his game was still quite erratic and inconsistent. Now that his game has improved ten-fold from his 2007 form, it's fascinating to see how far he can achieve on that surface.

I am worried about the Haas match as well, Haas seemed in good form on clay so how will it be on a surface on which he is much more comfortable  When playing well he is capable of not letting Jo dictate, so Jo will have to play a very good match tomorrow but he can do it. Jo wasn't great but Haas was very good, continuing his form from the first 2 sets against Fed at RG, and this was on grass this time, a surface on which he more comfortable. So I'm disappointed with the result but not exactly surprised. What is Jo going to do next week now? Is he playing that exhibition, or will he try for a WC at Eastbourne?

That's a pretty bad draw... I'm not worried about Verdasco, but Karlovic is a pain in the a**, and he got the worst quarterfinal opponent. I honestly think he can beat anyone in the draw, even Nadal, except for Federer .Plus he gains nothing from Nadal retirement with that draw. If Rafa had to withdraw, it could at least have opened the draw a little for my favs...

I have to ask what is with the Karlovic hype? Anyone remembers when he beat any top 50 player the last time in a best of five match? Is there any other than the famous Hewitt win years ago? It will be a small miracle if makes it that far. Lots of more challenging opponents he could have drawn

It's not really "hype", it's just that the guy is so annoying. He can lose to anybody, but if he has a good serving day it might be impossible to win for anyone, especially on grass. Of course the best of five format puts him at a disadvantage in slams, but that doesn't change the fact that if he gets to the third round, we'll have a boring, nerve-wracking, tie-break filled crap of a match.

Also I don't think the return of serve is Jo's strong suit...

That really applies only to the best of three matches. There's a reason he sucks in GS (or DC for that matter), you can't sustain that level of serving throughout five sets (and his second serve is probably nowhere near top 20 on tour), among other things. The years of falling in first rounds to the likes of Stadtler in Wimbledon have added the psychological burden. He's no real threat. Besides, Jo's much better than him in TBs :D

Wimbledon’s ninth seed was knocked out of the Boodles Challenge tennis tournament yesterday by Russian Nicolay Davydenko, who will now play in tomorrow's final.

Spectators were treated to two sets of fantastic tennis with both players testing each other to the extreme on the grass. With the match tied at one set all, the players fought it out in a championship tie-breaker eventually ending in 11-9.

Nikolay Davdydenko said: "I am surprised. It was a very hard match; especially the tie-break but I played some good shots. It makes me more confident for next week by playing here at Boodles and I’m really enjoying myself."

Terrible match from Jo.

I must be the only one around here, but I don't expect anything from Jo on grass. Apart from his serve, he's got nothing to use on this shitty grass that can be found everywhere now, and his movement is as terrible as it was on clay. We'll see where it goes, but I am not holding my breath for this tourney.

Jo did seem to have trouble getting around the court. Also, Golubev made some shots look so easy! By the way, I don't think Karlovic is a huge threat, I have this impresion of him as the guy who can lose to pretty much anyone. But then again, top 50players ranked outside of top 20 all fall into this category. :D I hope Jo can beat Bolelli without too much trouble. He needs to improve his returning skills eventually.

I prefer Jo clean-shaven and with very short hair - seems we all have different tastes ;)

I had never seen Golubev play before and was impressed at how he pushed Jo all the way. Jo's returns of serve - particularly second serves :smash: - leave much room for improvement. His game on grass is effective as long as he consistently produces those huge first serves. He does have some great defensive skills - his lateral movement is quite good - but he will tend to be exposed by serve&volleyors because he stays too far back behind the baseline. But to be fair to him, he does need some adjustment period to the surface; let's hope he wins the next match, which will allow him to improve his tactics, his movement and especially those returns of serves.

Jo won once against him, and Darcis isn't the most amazing player to play Ivo... I think Jo has a good shot!

I hope so :sobbing: Karlovic on grass can be very dangerous. I just hope Jo is returning ok, that could be a key in this match.

i suspect this match to enter in the record memory with the number of aces.
From the atp website there is an interesting stats.
Number of aces in 2009 (wimbledon is not included):
1/ Karlovic: 485 for 27 matches
3/ Tsonga: 359 for 41 matches

1st serve won:
1/ Karlovic: 84%
3/ Tsonga: 78%

Service games won:
2/ Karlovic: 91%
3/ Tsonga: 88%

(i dont add the last one bp saved, there is more difference and not in good side :p)but some stats from both are just :eek:
Tomorrow wil be a match of 2 aces machines :p
The one who will return more will win. They were talking about it in carrement tennis this morning and they said that Jo should not keep frustated to face lot of aces because on few points that Karlovic will have worst first serve it will be at this moment he could win the match, but it will not be easy.

jo lost 1st set and i don't think he can come back and win the match. he rarely does after dropping the 1st set.

Best-of-five match, first set is warmup and with Karlovic it's a toss up which way it goes. As time goes on, he'll read the serve better and Ivo's level on serve will drop. Taking the second is dandy in this respect, no added pressure in the third.

Jo  what kind of a second serve was that and for God's sake serve to his BH in situations like this

edit: I'm not referring to Jo there ofc, because he fired a lot of aces so far...

If Karlovic does not have this ace machine in his hands, the guy will not be even in the top 100 :o
The match was boring (and it was not due to jo).
Jo still did not play a match 5 sets

I am completely shocked by this loss. :o It turns out that I should have been worried about this match. Jo should seek advice from with Santoro next time he plays gigantic servers. I also think Karlovic served better than his usual level.

I said he was going to lose on him :/ I've never been more disappointed to be right.
This Wimbledon has now lost all kind of attractiveness for me  (save for Simon, but I don't see him getting past his next round either, so...)

Poor loss, mainly due from the lack of experience in playing these kind of players in these kind of matches.

It's hard to acknowledge for us atm, but Jo is critically limited in his performance by his lack of experience : he is 24 and has played two wimbledon and one RG in his entire life. He hasn't even played one fifth set. Compare it with the experience of the other top players like Murray or Djokovic and it's telling.
Next year period of Rg and Wimbledon should be very interesting though, particularly RG : he has gone further on clay, than on grass after all.

Fortunately, he is a much experience player on hard, so this US open should be good. I just hope that this time, he is going to play a lot of tournaments before. He should know by now that he needs some practice to be good.

I'm aware of it rationally, he's played fewer tournaments than any 20-year old I know, but at the same time he puts together such amazing displays and results, it takes over. Karlovic is a special breed and a lot boils down to patience, waiting for your opportunity and not getting frustrated, as well as not going for too much when you do because outside the serve he's not your typical top class opponent. At times, I felt he was actually more frustrated by lack of anything to get pumped about, than the nonreturnable serves. Perhaps that pumped up state is when he's "conditioned" to play clutch (I really thought the break in the 3rd was totally uncharacteristic for him, he practically gave it away on his own). As it is, there were very few points he got excited about in the sense I'm getting into the grove, because there was very little play on either serve.

poor Jo, the commentators were saying on BBC2 what a thoroughly boring match (this was aimed at Karlovic!) and in the PC in English they asked Jo "Did you play well?" and he kept repeating "I did not play, I did not play" as in I didn't get the chance to play because he aced me off the court! :( I have never seen Jo look so dejected after a loss, normally he seems to be able to take some positives from each and every match regardless of the result, but not this time it would seem. I think he thoght he would get further and seemed to just feel a sense of injustice at Karlovic's serve because at the end of the day, that serve is just not real tennis is it?! It's just serving and not much else. Sorry to any of his fans :o

I went to Wimbledon on Monday and saw Karlovic practising. How Jo even got a racket to any of his serves is beyond me. The man is HUGE! I expected him to be really skinny but he's not, he's really well built and he looked even taller than 6 foot 10 inches. Jo didn't really stand a chance. and he was just unlucky to have drawn him so early on.

I hope you had a good time, Vicky :D Karlovic is terrible. And it's only one man, can you imagine the whole next generation full of Karlovic babies ? :bolt: We will just start by the fifth set tie break
And he's so annoying, either he loses to a nobody for 5 straight first rounds, or he outs top ten players just to offer on a silver plate his semi final to Federer :o

For myself, I didn't expect something incredibly big from Jo for this Wimbledon as soon as I saw the draw; however I have an excellent feeling about the USO coming up ;)

Karlovic is a frustrating opponent for anyone. I really sympathised with Jo, who just wasn't allowed to play and engage into competitive rallies. In fact, both Jo and Verdasco suffered the same fate where Karlovic chose their matches to serve out of his mind - and of course, against Federer, he tightens up.

I'm now looking forward to the hard court season - don't forget that he missed the tournaments leading up to the US Open last year and every match he wins from now on constitutes a bonus.
