This is his official calendar, coming from his official website :

Avril :

> Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (Monaco) – Du 11 au 19 Avril (1000 ? )
> Open Sabadell Atlántico 2008 (Barcelone) – Du 20 au 27 avril (500)

Mai :

> Internazionali BNL d'Italia (Rome) – Du 28 Avril au 4 Mai (1000)
> Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open (Madrid) – Du 10 au 17 Mai (1000)
> ARAG ATP World Team Championship (Dusseldorf) – 17 Mai (250 ? )

> Roland Garros (Paris) – 24 Mai au 7 Juin (GS)

The problem is that he isn't on the entry list in Monte Carlo, so maybe a WC or an error  .

He seems to be playing all the 1000, one 500 and the arag machinchose for whatever the weird reasons he is there  .

It would be his first full clay season on the pro tour, so good luck, Jo :worship:

OK, we have some explanations about the Monte Carlo problem in l'équipe today. It's confirmed that he isn't playing there this year, except for one case : if he loses early in Miami, he will ask a WC at Monte Carlo. The reason is that he badly needs some rest after playing so much in the beginning of the season.

Oh thanks Benoit, Monte carlo looks like such a glamourous tournament (it's Gasquet's favourite) so it's a shame that Jo won't be there to soak up some of that atmosphere. I miss Jo already.

I wasn't sure what the Dusseldorf tournament was, so I looked it up a bit. It is on clay, which is good. The tournament's official site has pretty much no english content. Here's what I gathered from the pictures:

Gilles has also committed to play this tourney along with Jo. Guy Forget will be their team captain. I'm guessing since this is also a team format, they are trying to get pseudo davis cup experience. I also think they need a 3rd team member given Gilles' non-existent doubles skills.

The tourney does not award any ranking points as far as I know. (I checked Soderling and Lindstedt's ranking breakdowns and both guys have 0 atp ranking points for World Team Championship and Sweden won it last year)

France won it in 1986. The team was: Guy Forget, Henri Leconte, Thierry Tulasne and Eric Deblicker. :)

So, spring hard season is over and it's time to move to new place:)

Jo will not play Monte-Carlo? Monaco is so close to France, it is almost your home Jo! (and we all know how good Jo is when he is playing for home public)
But if Jo needs rest... He knows better what is good for him.

lisaplenske
04-02-2009, 08:50 AM
well you know better not risk an injury or something cause his body needs rest
Monte carlo is in france but clay season is hard and long.
So lets go slowly.
He needs to adapt on playing on clay.
Good luck to him. He'll have some other occasions to play in front of homecrowd.Hopefully roland garros.:)

Hey guys just got pointed in this direction (thanks Danakz) seeing as he got to the quarters in Miami I think its safe to assume he won't be asking for the Monte Carlo WC then? Still, it'll be good to see him play a full season on clay and I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing himself and Gilles (alongside Gael hopefully? That's just wishful thinking on my part though!) in the world team cup

It turns out, The World Team Championships will award points for the first time this year. (Special thanks to Truc for the info)

Jo withdraws from Barcelona, he has small pain in one knee

http://www.lequipe.fr/Tennis/breves2009/20090417_163343_tsonga-renonce.html

Bad beginning for french tennis on clay this year

:( Very bad start indeed Karine. But the article says it's just a minor injury and it's more out of precaution so let's hope that's true. And that the knee will be better after some rest.

Here is Jo's quarter at Rome :

1] NADAL, Rafael ESP vs BYE
SEPPI, Andreas ITA vs QUERREY, Sam USA
SODERLING, Robin SWE vs GRANOLLERS, Marcel ESP
QUALIFIER vs [14] BLAKE, James USA

[9] TSONGA, Jo-Wilfried FRA vs GASQUET, Richard FRA
ALMAGRO, Nicolas ESP vs GULBIS, Ernests LAT
FISH, Mardy USA vs ANDREEV, Igor RUS
BYE vs [8] VERDASCO, Fernando ESP

It's quite epic for a return after a three weeks pause !

Sorry for all the gasquetaires around here, but I am a hundred percent behind Jo for this first match.

Keijan

Jo against Richie in first round..... :banghead:

Gulbis hasn't been doing great lately... I'm thinking Almagro as a possible second round opponent for Jo. Then, either Andreev or Verdasco who are :help: on clay  not to mention Rafa ! For a return after 4 years without clay...

But one match at a time :rocker2:

It seems like I've waited forever to see Jo play on clay. Tough first round match against Gasquet, it will be interesting to see how well he adapts to the surface. Win or lose, there's still time to look ahead to the big prize: Roland Garros. Good luck Jo! Just do your best, any win is a bonus (so many points to be gained on clay and grass), and any loss a learning experience.

:) I like Richard, too. But not as much as Jo. :p I don't particularly want Jo to completely destroy Richie, but you know, a win in straight sets would be nice. I mean, poor boy lost to Christophe Rochus last time, something's definitely not going for him lately. I hope he starts playing better next week.

I think it will be Bashak. I just saw the end of Fish and Andreev and OMG, it was so gloomy on court, really low light and about 4 spectators! Hardly a great atmosphere for any player to play in. It's such a shame as this tournie has been a real wash out weather wise.

Bashak
04-28-2009, 09:17 PM
Ok, according to the official Rome tournement website, Jo's match is not cancelled yet, the doubles match on the same court originally scheduled to be played after Jo-Richard is cancelled. Fognini-Volandri match is currently on that court and so far it's 5-5 in the first set. Per favore attractive italian guys, hurry it up a little. I really wanted to watch this.

yes, I'm watching it on bet365, I registered a while back to watch livestreams. I didn't pay anything and it didn't require credit card info. just email address.
however check out channelsurfing and atdhe, too. they have links too. those links kept freezing on me. i'm guessing it's because of my incompetent internet service provider. so you might get a good stream without having to register.

And there is only two matches in between ? So at the very most, 4 hours to rest ? Couldn't they at least made the winner play on center court in the night session ?
The only good part is that it'll probably rain today too so they might have the second match postponed to tomorrow.

This is awful! All that nervous tension and stress waiting in vain to play, and now the winner has to play 2 matches on the same day with barely enough rest. Most players have completed their first round matches and Jo and Richard appear to be severely handicapped. However, they are pros and accept such conditions. I wish both of them mental fortitude and physical strength, and all the best to whoever makes it through (hopefully Jo).

I didn't know whether to post this or not (I did mention it on Richard's boards but none of the others heard it but they were watching on livestreams I think) but the crowd were terrible from what I could see. I was watching on Sky tv and some of the crowd were whistling and making ape noises when Jo was about to serve. He actually turned to the crowd at one point almost as if to ask them to stop it. That kind of thing disgusts me. I think that is what got to Jo today and I wonder if he will mention it in any interviews.

They'll probably ask Jo about it in the press conf. It's really sad to see things like that nowadays, especially in tennis which has been kind of spared by that until recently, with the golliwog comment

MacArthur
04-29-2009, 04:07 PM
It was clearly a poor match, tennisticaly speaking from Jo, but not a so poor match for a come-back on a surface he lacks experience on. He needs to win a match or two in the next tourney and to complete it in the ARAG thingy and it's all good for RG.
It's not really a surprise, we know he is a diesel, he needs some matches to go at full speed. He was also not very confortable in his movements. He just needs some time, I think.

For the crowds, I can't confirm for sure on the "racists" demeanor, cause I shut up the sound of my TV (I can't bear to listen to Guillaume Roux, the guy is a terrible commentator with nothing to say). But Jo was clearly displeased by the constant noise they were making and more or less gave the match up to Gasquet at the end because of it.

Bashak
04-29-2009, 05:05 PM
:sobbing: what happened? 40 unforced errors in the second? looks horrible. Also Richie has more net points won than Jo. What's up with that? Good win for Richie but I did not see it coming at all with Richie's recent ridiculous performance. And of course, I did not get to watch it, stupid rain.
I hope to watch him play in the championship thing, it better be televised.

Turquoise
04-30-2009, 04:18 AM
I'm not worried about this loss. It's Jo's first match on clay since his unfortunate withdrawal at Cassablanca last year. He needs more time to get used to the surface and its specific conditions. Richard Gasquet is a tricky first round opponent and knows Jo's game very well. Had he been allocated a lesser-ranked opponent in the first round, his attacking game might have paid more dividends and given him more confidence for the next rounds. Tough luck, but good learning experience nevertheless. He and Winogradsky will have a better idea on what areas to work on.

He definitely needs more competitive matches on clay before RG (training practices won't be much help), hence it would be a good idea to request a wild card next week at Estoril, Munich or Belgrade.

Fascinating 1st round against Safin, I hope we get a good contest. I do have a soft spot for Safin but for the greater good, I want Jo to win because he is so motivated and focused with the goal to win the whole tournament, and not just a couple of matches. With Safin, he wins matches he should be losing, and loses matches he should be winning (so erratic and unpredictable) and next thing you know, he's out too soon. Allez Jo!

Jo's hair has got longer (looks really nice) and he seems to have a new tatoo on his leg or it's some elaborate strapping, either way I have never noticed it before  it's like 2 black stripes. Well done and Allez Jo :bounce:

Good match today JoWi, made me smile a little, on a day when I didn't think tennis would make me smile.

It really is good to see he is finally "off and running" on the clay- I hope he can get on a good run here, the slight altitude does seem to benefit aggressive players, which was nice to see.

OMG girls, just saw your discussion on JoWi's strapping. :rolls: That would be one heck of a weird tattoo!

I don't mind the bad-ass look, he has a great bone structure and can probably pull off all kinds of hairstyles. But I prefer the more boyish, cuddly look longer hair gives him. Actually, I don't care much for his hair. As long as he's healty and playing, he can support a Verdasco mohawk and I will not be bothered.

I was curious and I looked up older pictures of him with much longer hair from the very first link on the pictures thread. They are adorable! Granted, he was younger but still very cute.

I saw most of the match and it was pretty weird. In the first he was a bit heavy and slow, making some mistakes, and couldn't touch Llubo's serve. Then I saw the second set until 3-1 for him, and he was playing awesomely, very aggressive but with more safety. I came back to see him serving for the match at 5-3, and he was spraying balls all over the place and into the net, I don't really know why.

Maybe something is wrong wiith him again, because from time to time he touched hs knee, and a few times he kind of "crumbled" upon impact with the ball, with a big "HAN", though he seems to do that a lot when I see him play, I don't know what that means .

Let's hope he'll have some good matches next week before RG, but Lluba was pretty good I must say, especially on serve.

It was a case of experience versus exhuberance, and experience won.

Jo’s aggressive style is commendable; however he needs to be more patient at times and not over-force the issue at crucial moments. He succumbed to a flurry of unforced errors when serving at 5-3, and failed to capitalise on several breakpoint opportunities, notably at 3-0 which would have given him a comfortable double break. Identifying and punishing his opponent’s weaknesses can be as, if not more, effective than concentrating on his own strengths. For example, it was perplexing why he kept serving to Ljubicic’s backhand on the ad side despite being stung time and time again on the returns? :help:

In the final analysis, Jo’s lack of competitive matches on clay was patently obvious. There are real positives in his game and we haven’t seen yet how good he can be on clay. Hopefully, he will be able to work himself into the RG draw, as he will meet weaker opponents in initial rounds and and can use the best of five set format to get himself back into a winning position when he’s down. Not to forget the phenomenal home support on which he thrives ;) I sincerely hope to see him give the best of himself there and succeed – I’ll be behind him all the way. All the best Jo!

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - "Je suis dans le bon timing"

Jo gave the impression of serenity in the press conference following his defeat against Ljubicic.

The match

Today, I felt as good as yesterday. The opponent was simply better. Regarding the first set, I have nothing to reproach myself for. In the second set, I served for the set … and unfortunately, I did not manage this service game properly. Normally, in this type of situation, I am serene. This time, no. The next time, I will apply myself to doing better. What disappointed me today, is that I could not go further in the tournament. I have regrets, of course. But to be frank, it’s not really the priority in my season. I will simply try to do better next time.

A worthy opponent

Overall, Ivan played very well. Returned very well, on the baseline : I only have to say « well done ! » I expected that, in view of what he already showed at the Australian Open. He’s a good match player, and he’s playing better and better recently.

The incident with the cameras

I went to serve for the second set, it was an important moment, I was concentrated. Nervous. And when, at the moment where you toss the ball, you hear « clac clac clac… » it’s annoying ! You tell them the first time. You explain to them that they can take plenty of photos throughout the match, when you’re leading 15-0 or 40-0 for example… But, at important moments…. (sighs) Briefly, they start again just after, and then … You repeat a second time. At this moment, frankly, this drives you nuts ! It ‘s painful… On one hand, it’s also my fault. I have to remain focused. But, frankly, I wish they would sometimes have more tact when the guy is ultra concentrated.

Leg problem ?

I don’t lean well on left leg. It’s a technical problem, but I feel absolutely no pain. It’s been a while since I’ve been doing this…

Positive attitude

I could have done much better… But I can’t win all the time ! It ‘s twice in a row now that I lose early, but in a sense, it’s a good thing : I will re-assess myself, be philosophical about it. I continue my journey, and hope to arrive at Roland with maximum confidence.

The courts of Caja Magica…

I am not allowed to say anything bad about the ATP (smiles)…

Dans les starts pour Roland ** not sure of this expression

Although I did not make it today, I feel ready to attack 3 set matches. Despite all the running I did, I felt at the end of the match that I could do so for another 3 hours !

Countdown before the French Open ?

I am not an accountant, not to the nearest cent (laughter). I have the feeling my timing is good. *NB: sorry, can't find the right context here

World Team Cup : ideal preparation for Roland Garros ?

Knowing that we will play minimum three matches, that’s good. That’s what is needed. But I can’t say that there’s an « ideal » way of preparing. The important thing is to play on clay before arriving at Roland Garros. To perform well in the match. To be ready.

Is it enough to have played only 3 matches on clay 10 days before Roland Garros ?

It’s not a lot. But if that’s something to talk about, that’s cool… (smile)

Nadal dethroned at Porte d’Auteuil : a plausible scenario ?

Why not ? And what if he has a little sprain ? (laughter) (Obviously, I don’t wish that on him) He plays very well, and it will be difficult, it’s true. But, if I’m playing in a tournament, it’s with the intention of winning it. I aspire for the title !

just out of curiousity how many tatoos does gael have? One of each wrist, but they're pretty big.

I didn't see much of Jo in Madrid because I left before his match on Monday and on Tuesday I had to leave for the airport after 3 games already, so I just saw him get broken. Plus the battery of my camera died at the beginning of his match, so I couldn't take any pics either, I just have a few:
http://picasaweb.google.de/Trucsdetennis/TennisMadrid2
I saw him practice with Troicki in the morning and he was looking good, smiling, I didn't notice anything wrong with him. It was quite obvious by watching him in training last year in Hamburg that something was wrong with him, he was looking in better spirits in Madrid (I know the comparison is weird, but Hamburg is the last time I saw him in person).

I love his answer about the Caja Magica too! But he's definitely oversensitive with things happening around him in matches, the ballkids, the photographers, people talking in the crowd... It's true one can hear the photographers a lot in Madrid because the stadium is so damn empty and any little sound starts resonating in it, but it's crazy Jo can't get over it.

www.tennislive.tv has awesome livestreams, but I'm not sure it will work outside of Germany.
They will probably have the matches on demand, though, they always do.
So far they only have a short video about the "open day event" yesterday, you can spot Jo practicing with Jim, but really just a few seconds:
http://www.tennislive.tv/turniere/arag-world-team-cup/arag-world-team-cup-impressionen-tag-der-offenen-tuer

I took a look at the German media, but nothing interesting so far. Jo said they want to win, which I doubt! The final will be on Sunday, I can't believe they want to be back in Paris on Monday only when Roland-Garros has already started.
It's such an odd event, the last round always is a "qui perd gagne" story because the top players want to go to Paris as soon as possible.

MacArthur
05-17-2009, 02:40 PM
He was terrible in the first, even if the swedish was playing pretty good (1 UE in the first 5 games !).

Now he is frustrated by his footplay and his unability to close the match once and for all. But I think it's just a matter of time.

The poor wino has the ears in pieces :haha:

By great points you mean absolutely unbelievable, right? My livestream had a moment of weakness just at the moment of that passing shot, and I honestly thought the point was over and that the ball had gone past him, I couldn't believe what happened when I suddenly saw kohli leaping to try to get the ball. I had to wait for the replay to even understand what had happened. He played an angled top-spin passing-shot from one meter behind the baseline, coming back from the net, behind the back and holding his racket upside down. I don't think i've ever seen that, EVER.

:o Well-deserved win for Kohlschreiber. He seems to have raised his level since the last time I watched him play, which was I think Australian Open against Santoro.
Jo,. I think Jo needs some tuning up. His backhands were sloppy, he was late to get to the ball on many occasions. I believe he won the first set by pure luck, too.

Good third set : first a return to the basis with the good ol' moonball plan : "defend hard, defend sure, make him sweat". Second, some tentative gameplan, some controlled agression and some good winners.

I'm glad to hear Jo has found form. Too bad Gilles lost again, poor guy can't seem to get a break. I am actually amazed he accomplished so much with his fragile-looking physique. I wonder if France has a chance to play any more matches, I doubt it but if they did it would be good for experience. I'm not sure about the format of Düsseldorf.
Fingers crossed for Paris now. I hope the french crowd gives him the excellent support he feeds on.

Eventhough I think it could have been a lot worse and I would only worry about possible a Juan Monaco in the first 3 rounds, now that Benneteau has won more matches on clay than Jo, I am going to look at the draw one match at a time and be content if he goes past 1st round. Good Luck Jo!

Bennet is a tricky opponent for Jo (he has already lost one time against him on hard last year), and a trickier one at RG where he had some really good results : something like one quarter final and a 1/8 final last year, that's telling something.

So has you said, one match at a time is a good approach.

Great start by Jo! And that slam-dunk smash – that was Jo at his uninhibited, explosive best! :worship:

I felt bad for Benneteau as he had done so well to reach the finals in Austria as a lucky loser last week and was playing well - this was a cruel draw for him. Still, the most important thing is that Jo won his first match at RG  Juan Monaco is going to be one tough cookie in the second round. As long as Jo keeps his head, doesn't become too impetuous at key moments, he should progress to the third round and give the discerning French crowd thrills galore.

Jo will play Christophe Rochus in the third round. Rochus has been playing well lately. The guy can surely move around. Because of the extreme size difference and Jo's adidas zipper shirt, this match-up reminded me of an Olivier Rochus - Marat Safin grand slam match some years ago. Olivier was 30 cm shorter than Marat, I remember it was a very entertaining match that Safin won, but it was very close.

According to the ATP website Jo is 27 cm taller and 22 kg heavier than Christophe Rochus. :D

I saw most of today's match and it was a great performance by Jo. Monaco may be 68th in the world but he is top 20 on clay so this was an important win for Jo-Jo. Everybody said the handshake was really warm (I missed the last set!), the bit about the baby was really cute and could Jo have a new girlie in his life? Somebody said there was a cute brunette sittng next to his coach?

Well done Jo :worship:

This match against Monaco was a great test for him. Monaco is a clay specialist: resilient, fast and tactically sound on clay. Jo is proving that he can transfer his aggressive playing style on this surface and succeed. When he serves well and dictates with his forehand, he is superb. Monaco did make him play too many backhands, whilst camping in his own backhand corner hitting forehands at will. It's clear that all his opponents will employ a similar strategy, in which case Jo will have to try to get to his forehand more - especially on his opponent's weaker second serves instead of pushing backhands in the middle of the court and being dictated to. One of the commentators kept saying he wished Jo would hit backhands down the line more - he can do that, but it's not a natural shot like Safin's, so really, he should play to his strengths (serve, forehand) as much as possible. Anyway, just observations on my part - Jo and his coach know what are the best tactics he needs to use.

Good luck against Rochus. I have more positive feelings about this next encounter. It's wonderful that he's made it this far and showing that yes, he can actually play on clay. Good job!

Great match from Jo.

I see a lot of negative opinions already on this match, but I think we should not dismissed by any means what Jo has done today. The major reason is that Jo didn't destroyed Rochus only by poqwer, it was mostly a great technical match. I am particularly amazed by the quality of his topspin and his perfect grasping of the timing to make a winner on clay. His movement was great too.
It's also interesting to note that Jo always had a very difficult time till now to play with the wind and he was perfect on this plan in the three matches he played.

Now I beleive he's fully prepared to make a hell for every opponent he will have for the rest of the tournament.

I am going to take some risks but Jo will beat D-Pot easily on monday :)

Well the match was pretty bad because of how Rochus was playing. He looked like he didn't want to be there from the moment he stepped onto the court. But that doesn't take away from the fact that Jo played pretty good and his forhand was just :worship:. Also I feel he was coping really well with the circumstances on court (wind etc)

I think he can beat JMDP. I think in 4 sets.

I was about to say something similar. I think it's embarrassing for Rochus to play 3rd round in a GS on a center court and not bother to run down balls, or even more comically, when he hit a drop shot and behaved as if he won a point. Jo naturally made it in time and hit a winner  The result was never in question IMO and Jo played great, but it would have been more interesting if the other guy tried his best.
