Time to discuss Andy's progress in this tournament

Possible draw

R1 - BYE
R2 - Montanes/Serra
R3 - Mathieu/Starace
R4 - Cilic/Robredo
QF - Tsonga/Simon
SF - Verdasco/Federer
F - Nadal/Djokovic

03-10-2009, 09:51 PM
If he is anything like fit he should make R4, but Robredo/Cilic could be trouble. His H2H with Robredo is 0-2! 2-0 with Cilic but Marin has improved a lot recently. I would bet on a fit Andy to take either of them, but such a big weight loss must surely have weakened him. I think I would settle for R4 here, and hope he is back to normal by Miami.

Good luck Andy :)

I'd be just happy to see him get some match practice in by winning 1 or 2 rounds. To prepare for Miami. Anymore than that would be great!!

Viruses are a weird thing they can debilitate you completely one week and you can be pretty much fine the next? So he might feel well enough to play the way he can who knows?

All depends on how he's feeling. Muz has shown over last 6 months when fit over 3 sets on a HC he is incredibly hard to beat.

Andy Murray kicks off his Indian Wells campaign on Friday after declaring himself fit to play despite still suffering the after-effects of a virus.

The Scot partners Ross Hutchins in the doubles against Tomas Berdych and Nicolas Kiefer from around 1700 GMT.

And the fourth seed, who had a bye into the second round, will then face Albert Montanes in the singles on Saturday.

"There's no point in me coming here and saying I'm feeling perfect and I've had the best preparation," said Murray.

"I took 10 full days off. Obviously, because of that, I lost a little bit of fitness and I am not hitting the ball as well as I was before I was sick. But hopefully if I can get through a couple of matches I can work my way into the tournament.

Murray on the mend in California
"As you get older you start to understand that you're not going to feel perfect every week and you try and find a way to get through the first couple of matches."

The 21-year-old fell ill at the quarter-final stage of the Dubai Open two weeks ago and then pulled out of Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against Ukraine, saying the virus had hit him harder than any illness during his career.

Murray will test his fitness on Friday in the doubles ahead of what could be a tricky tie against Spain's world number 35 Montanes, who beat Frenchman Florent Serra 6-3 6-0 in the first round.

He's the greatest challenger I've ever had

Federer on Nadal
The British number one has met Montanes only once, beating him in straight sets on his way to the Qatar title in January.

Murray could face Roger Federer in the semi-finals as they have been drawn in the same half.

Should he come through his first match, the seedings suggest Murray would come up against Paul-Henri Mathieu, Tommy Robredo and Gilles Simon before facing Federer in the last four.

Federer, a three-times champion at Indian Wells, has lost to the British star five times in seven career meetings, including their last three encounters.

The Swiss, who announced on Thursday that he is to become a father, is also keen to renew his rivalry with Rafael Nadal after an epic five-set defeat in the Australian Open final last month.

"I love playing matches against him, especially those five-setters, seeing if I can hang with him physically without a problem," said Federer, who will first take on Marc Gicquel after the Frenchman beat Simone Bolelli 7-5 6-3 on Thursday.

"He's the greatest challenger I've ever had. I am really motivated because I don't know how much better he can play.

In the interview linked from the ATP site, Andy, when pushed to assess his fitness, says about 70%-75% at present but he hopes to step it up match by match.

I just hope he doesn't meet somebody on fire in the meantime!

PHM can be a very tricky customer if he is in the mood.

Yes, I thought Andy got better and better as the match wore on - started to look more and more like the Andy of Doha and Abu Dhabi in terms of serving, pace off the ground and tactical execution - a bit less passive trading and more purposeful shot selections. Mathieu was pretty awful, true...he is just a bit on the one-note, brainless side in terms of thinking through the situation - just does the same thing over and over again...but good stuff from Andy nonetheless - in R4 he'll need to be better again but at least it doesn't seem like that's beyond reach.

It’s funny the pattern of players who have retired against Murray this year alone. Either he’s doing something very right, the way he toys around with his opponents ultimately breaking down their will, or maybe it’s the Murray Curse (kidding) ;)

Anyway, good job to make it to the quarter-finals. Well-deserved - he's given it his best shot although he's not had the best preparation. Good luck!

scoobs
03-19-2009, 07:08 AM
Yeah - I'm sorta happy now - I'd like him to win the title, obviously, but I think QF is a very respectable showing given how unlikely it was he was even going to play the event to begin with.

But I think his next match at least is very winnable.

I'm trying to think what Murray's H2H against Ljubicic is. I know he's beaten him before but I also know he's lost to him a couple of times too. Ljubicic is playing well but so is Andy so I have every confidence he can do it

Betty

mayneu laready read andy words
Andy's View

"I'd seen him before the match having ice on his wrist but he was hitting the ball well, serving big and I didn't see him letting up on too many shots. But obviously it was affecting him.

"I'd like to hit the ball a little bit cleaner from the back and the start of all my matches have been a little bit passive while I've been trying to work my way into a rhythm.

Match Stats

The H2H is 2 all, but the first two were back in 2006 (one each), the third at the start of 2007 (Ljubo won). The most recent, in Rotterdam this year, Andy won 6-3 6-2.

I find the clamour on GM that Andy was "unsportsmanlike" for making that Hawkeye challenge quite unreasonable. If the ball had been near him when it landed they would have a point, but he was at the other side of the net and the far side of the court. . .he had every right to make the challenge, it was not his fault if the Hawkeye operator made a mess of it.

Hawkeye has its faults, but I still think it is a lot better than many if not most linesman calls - and I would have said that if the point had gone against Andy.

Andy's View

“That was a big one for me. I've always had tough matches with him. I played much better today than in the previous matches - that’s one of my best against him for sure.

"He started to miss a few backhands after I fell over. Then he started moving round to try and hit forehands, and was out of position.

Lather, rinse, repeat as needed, it seems.

As a Fed fan also behind Andy I do find Fed's sad collapses in these matches a bit depressing and it does temper my enthusiasm over the win.

Nevertheless, tactically spot on again from Andy today - he knows which weak spot to hit and he sticks the knife into it and then keeps twisting until lifesigns are extinct. Federer yet to find an effective tactic. Maybe he should revisit the US Open final, see what he did there that he's not doing now.

Pity about his inability to handle the conditions in the final, especially against a resilient opponent like Nadal - but this will act as a learning curve for him. No matter what curve balls are thrown at you, you have to find a way to overcome and prevail. He's on the right track though: that competitive streak & hate-to-lose mentality will serve him well on the big occasions in future.

I'd just like to congratulate Murray for a great tournament this week. :yeah: We all expected this to be a warm-up tournament prior to Miami, so I'm very pleasantly surprised that he played within himself and trotted all the way to the final without necessarily playing his best tennis. Good job!

Good luck in Miami!

I couldn't say it better:worship:
good luck Andy!

by reading the comments I am quite happy that I couldn't watch the match. I like Rafa so I am ok with his win but I would have liked Andy to perform at least a little better.
But all in all I think it was an unexpected great tournament and I hope he can continue in Miami.
