Djokovic and Murray top seeds

Dubai: With some of the top players missing the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships either due to injuries or otherwise, the favourites' tag now falls on Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Murray is just back from winning his second title of the season in Rotterdam, while Djokovic was up against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinal of the Marseille Open last night.

And both Djokovic and Murray seem to have got easy matches in the first two rounds with the top-seeded Serbian taking on one of the four qualifiers, while the Scot drawing Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Gilles Simon of France, another semifinalist against countryman Michael Llodra in Marseille last night, and David Ferrer of Spain are the number three and four seeds this week.

Some of the top players such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Nicolai Davydenko and Fernando Verdasco have pulled out, mostly due to injuries.

And if all goes as per form, the second seeded Murray may end up playing former world number one and wild card Marat Safin in the quarterfinals, while Djokovic may run into fifth seed Marin Cilic at the same stage.

This is Cilic's second year in Dubai - his first visit last year was cut short by Djokovic in the very first round. Since then, the lanky Croat has progressed well after starting this season with two titles on the Tour - Chennai and Zagreb.

"Last year I didn't stick around, but now I am not too scared either of Murray or Djokovic as I have been playing some solid tennis of late," Cilic said.

Oh....a series of heart attacks coming then...
This Cilic took away a lot of Nole's energy in USO last year
Hopefully Nole can be through......
If it's Nole VS Murray in the final, I'm gonna go crazy....

AJDE NOLE!!!!!!!

I want a Marat-Nole final so badly. I want Marat to have a good final year and I want Murray gone in the first round so he can distance himself from Nole (points wise)

I like Andy, I really do, but Marat has been a long-time fave of mine and Nole needs this title to get some confidence back.

They're useful for other things too as you know :)

Good thing I get to watch matches at work without any problems, that is, if you're not in over your head. All they care about is you get the daily work done inside those 8h, and should you wrap it up more quickly, you're free to watch whatever your heart desires.

Naturally, you're always monitoring the screens and all, but on a slow day, it's basically like sitting at home. For the time being that is. I have learned I'm about to be sent to several courses, which is great. For all my love of tennis, I still love my job more. :o

Good luck tomorrow Nole.:)

Our commentators made some interesting points in that match. Were talking about Michael Chang, and how after he won a Grand Slam early in his career, he admitted that his tennis was no longer a "pleasure" for a while, but a "pressure" because everyone was expecting so much of him. They said they believe it is the same for Nole - especially with the pressure of being such a "big star" in his own country, and that it could take him a couple of years for him to adjust. I tend to agree with them.

That seems like what's going on. He doesn't seem to enjoy playing as much as he used to. Let's hope he comes through it soon and rebounds better than Chang.

I swear tennis journalists are some of the stupidest people on the planet. Perpetually pussyfooting around and never asking meaningful questions. I wish one of them would be intrepid enough to get in Nole's face and ask him if he thinks he's playing like the world #3, whether he's not shortchanging his fans and the other spectators with one ugly match after another, etc.

The boy really needs a wake-up call that obviously is not forthcoming from his camp; a rude reporter just might do the trick.

And if Marian can't do anything about that egregiously errant forehand after all these matches in which it's been a key feature of Nole's game, he should voluntarily resign and go back to coaching an up-and-comer. He's clearly way in over his head and incapable of guiding Nole to the next level.

"I think I didn't play as the crowd hoped," said Djokovic after a 6-3, 6-2 win which took an hour and 24 minutes and involved many long rallies and grittily contested deuce games.

However it was my first match, so I hope they will excuse me - next time I will hopefully be better," the top-seeded Serbian added.

"He was changing a lot of pace," said Djokovic, "and I am not used to playing such a player. I didn't play well, but I won."

“I’m happy that I’m through in straight sets but it certainly wasn’t the performance I was looking for,” said Djokovic. “I didn’t expect him to play so many short balls and with the change of pace that’s probably what didn’t give me a lot of rhythm. But it’s alright. Hopefully I can improve my game towards the finish of the tournament.”

Furiouser and furiouser I'm getting.

He allowed himself to get broken TWICE by a gnat of a perennial journeyman ranked 125! Just try doing that with Cilic...can you imagine him breaking the Croat 4 times in 2 sets? Cos you so don't want to have to take a monster server to a tiebreak.

It wouldn't be so bad if he was about to be overtaken by another dish like, say, Gulbis, but that hideous hash of haggis? Pretty soon, tennis commentaries should be available only on radio.

Masha91
02-25-2009, 04:29 AM
Hmm I know, he definitely won't get away with that type of play against Cilic, we'll just have to hope that he starts getting into some better form, I would hate do see the third spot taken away from him and given to Murray.

Chupakabra

IMO, maybe the right explanation of Nole's poor performance in the opening round of Dubai just lies in normal process of adaptation to the court and different conditions (indoor HC to outdoor HC). All the top players are not like machines. You can't expect them to play perfectly all the time, with some conditions changing so swiftly.

I mean, look at Gilles Simon's performance in the first round. He lost the first set against 469th-ranked Kuwaiti wildcard Mohammed Ghareeb and hardly managed to win  And Murray as well. Nobody could predict that he would lose the first set against Stakhovsky. That's the proof to support my claim, and this is what Simon says about his match:

"I just arrived from Marseille and yesterday was the first time I played outside, and it's so different," said Simon. "So at the beginning of the match I was really playing bad. I had a lot of problems in my game.

"He was confident and he just played an amazing match. That's why it was so hard."

http://uk.reuters.com/article/UK_TENNIS/idUKLO1755020090224?pageNumber=2&virtualBrandChannel=0

Nole was even most impressive out of three of them (Nole, Simon, Murray) in the first round, according to the result, at least...

And here is a complete transcript of Nole's interview after the Cippola match:-

http://www.barclaysdubaitennischampionships.com/2/transcripts/interviews/djokovic2.pdf

An interview with:
NOVAK DJOKOVIC
THE MODERATOR: All right.
Questions, please.
Q. Your thoughts on the match?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I'm happy that I'm through in straight sets, but certainly it wasn't the performance I was looking for. I didn't expect him to play so many short balls, and with a change of pace, and that's probably what didn't give me a lot of rhythm. It's my first match, and I didn't have a lot of practice here and arrived two days ago from Europe. But it's all right. Hopefully I can go with my game towards the finish of the tournament.

Q. Is it tougher to switch from indoors to out, or go outdoors to in?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I think indoors to outdoors, because outdoors, you have elements probably that affect most, wind, heat, sun, things like that; it's different. Indoors, you can get more still conditions and get rhythm much faster than outdoors. But as I said, you always need a couple of days, which I didn't have. That's probably the
reason why I had a little weaker performance today.

Q. What did you think when you heard that Federer and Nadal were not playing here? Did you feel disappointed that you could not test yourself against them?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No. I didn't have any feelings to be honest. I just try to focus on myself and I had some ups and downs this year. I didn't really start the year the -- the way things went, it was a little more difficult for me. So I'mtrying to get on the right path, and that's what the most matters for me.

Q. Most of us have not seen you since Australia. What happened in theaftermath of that? How were you after that, and what did you do to sort of pick yourself up again?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I had to take some time off. There were speculations about that in the media, which I understand, obviously, but the people don't understand how hot it was.And there was no absolutely logic in me
playing during the day, if I finished 2:00, 2:30 in the morning the night before. There was a couple of things involved, but I just don't want to come back to it. It's just what has been, it has been. It's passed.

Q. But you're okay physically?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yeah, I'm okay now.

Q. You spoke about, obviously, tonight, struggling to find your rhythm. Is there a sense sometimes that in the first round, you actually prefer a three-set match so you just get more court time?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I don't know. It's really hard to say. You always want to finish earlier, and winning in straight sets, but maybe sometimes three sets is needed.I don't think tonight's goal was to play three sets. I think it was just to perform good tennis, be aggressive. I was a bit too aggressive.I made some unforced errors, but happy to be in the second round.

Q. With all of the pressure and expectation that you've experienced over the past 12 months, are you enjoying this game quite as much as you once did?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, look, it's a good question. I always try to enjoy what I do on and off the court. And really, I certainly don't have too many issues outside of the court, because I try to be as positive as I can, and try to enjoy the life. And I'm really happy with all of the things that are happening for me. I have a great surroundings, great people, honest people who have been really supporting me in my career. The only thing is for sure I didn't like the things that have been happening around in this, you know, last, seven, eight months in the media about me. But you know, that's a part of the life and I just have to deal with it.

Q. How are the tournament preparations coming on for Belgrade, with your family running it?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yes, we are directly involved in the organization. I can say that I'm really happy with the way things are going. We are on schedule and we will try to make one of the best organized events in the world, really. I know it's the first year, but me as a player, from the player's perspective, I know all of the things which are really important from the player's side, and of course sponsor's side. And all Serbia is now living for tennis. It's the No. 1 sport, and everybody wants to come almost to attend the event, which helps us, as well.

Q. What sort of field have you got?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Sorry?

Q. What sort of field have you got?
What players have you got?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, we are still negotiating. We are still negotiating. I can't say the names. I don't want to announce before it's certain.

Q. You're seeded No. 1. If seedings go to form, could you place Andy in the final on Saturday. If that happens, how would you feel about that?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It's still a long way, a long way to the final. I have tough encounters. Every match is important as the final. Next round I have Hernych, I won against him last week in Marseilles. Hopefully I can get through that, and then I have opponents like Cilic, who has lost only one match this year.
Let's see if it comes through to my encounter against Andy. I think everybody would like to see that, but we go step-by-step.

Q. They are talking about the dreamfinal to see seed one versus seed two.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yes.

Q. How impressed are you with the way Andy is playing, two titles this seasonalready?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, look, he'sone of best players in the world, there's no doubt. He's been playing fantastic tennis in the past couple of months, and he's proven that. So, he gained a lot of strength physically. He's there at the top and he always was playing really smart tennis and with a great touch. So, you know, it's a matter of time when he can win a Grand Slam title.

Q. Next week in Spain, Davis Cup, is it a big, big favorite or just a favorite?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: The title defenders are obviously the, defenders whoever we play, and Spain is the best team in the world at the moment. But one thing is for sure; that we are not going there to, you know, just play some good
tennis. I think we have quite a young team, which can really challenge every team on the world on every surface. I believe that.Of course, Rafa not playing makes a whole lot of difference, but still, they are favorites.

Q. Coming back to today's match, were you happy with your first serve? You missed a lot of first serves.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, not really. But I'm trying to take the best out of it. I think I need to work on the serve and some other elements of my game in these couple of days, if I may still in the tournament. So as I said, I didn't get an outdoor match since the Australian Open and played in the indoors most of this time. So still need some time to get used to the conditions.

Q. When there was a doubt about this tournament, the question was that you would get a Visa; were you consulted by the ATP about this?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Not really. I wasn't consulted by anybody. I did follow, and I was informed, because it was a big story. It was a very difficult thing and very sensitive for both sides, but I'm glad it got solved.

My commentator said "At least he got a smiley face on his dampner" :haha: It better starts looking angry at Nole from time to time ;)

*Thumps chest*

JP's got his DS out and is sudoku-ing to take his mind off things.

Well Alex just suggested that if we all wanted to follow a handsome Serbian tennis player, he would dress in black and take up the game, because he couldn't be any worse than Nole is :tape:

"At least he got a smiley face on his dampner" :haha: It better starts looking angry at Nole from time to time ;)

He always has that! For all the good it does him :tape:

Lee

They seem to play the game "I can play worse than you" :tape: instead of tennis.

How many winners did he make so far?
I can't remember any of them. :p

Shit! This Hernych getting on my nerves.

Caught the line and at deuce! Good bc that was def a winner!

Come on Nole! BP#2! Take it!

Alright! :woohoo:

Now, got to serve it out!

*Ljubica*
02-25-2009, 05:45 PM
Cilic sure won't give Nole the gifts that Hernych has tonight

And hands up who is  that Nole won't hold here whilst serving for the set?

Lee

The one that wipe out Hernych's game point?

What a set!

*Ljubica*
02-25-2009, 05:48 PM
Thank God for that  A few (just a few) rare glimpses of the real Djokovic in that last game. Now come on Nole - show us how good you are in the next set :)

kalisita
02-25-2009, 05:50 PM
:bigclap: There's the first set with little drama serving! One to go! I do think he's playing a little bit better those last couple games. Hopefully get better in 2nd. Makes me nervous that he's serving 2nd though.

I really don't know what he's doing out there. Or if he's really out there.

How low can we go here ? :o Come on Nole! Let's care here.

Lee
02-25-2009, 06:29 PM
I don't know, kalisita! Another love game by Hernych and Nole doesn't look like he cares.

Lee
02-25-2009, 06:29 PM
And now Hernych is sooooo confident that his shots are painting the lines. And running down every shots

kalisita
02-25-2009, 06:31 PM
Pathetic. Why did he even bother to come if he hates being out there so much?

Lee
02-25-2009, 06:34 PM
I can't find any more adjectives to describe his play.

The commentators are right. How much deeper he is willing to dig and how hard he wants to win this match?

Lee

Same here. The fire and desire to win are lost from his eyes.

And somehow he managed to break back.

Ajde Nole! Break!

There is something wrong somewhere in his life. He's looks as if he's just had all the life drained out of him.

And this commentator seems to think Nole's support is like playing at home wherever he goes

more drop shot of death. :worship:

:yeah: While in a time of crisis, you go with what works. ;)

An easy hold for once. Now, time to break and get off the court. After midnight already.

OH, well, an even easier hold for Hernych.
