I think I jinx him by posting here during tourneys so I'll just say good luck Andy! At least until the semis anyway!!!

Much as I love Gilles, Andy totally has his number and I find their matches a bit difficult... even though I love to tell myself its a win win situation ;)
Anyway, Andy's playing doubles with James Auckland, they're 2nd match on Court 2 tomorrow.
See you guys after the trophy ceremony!!! :p

Murray begins ranking push against Ljubicic

Published Date: 10 February 2009
By Eve Fodens

ANDY Murray is back on court today for the first time since his fourth-round exit at the Australian Open.

The world No 4 will face Ivan Ljubicic in the first round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

Murray will hope to come through a tricky looking opening match as he bids to bounce back from his five-set defeat by eventual semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco in Melbourne.

The Scot went into the year's opening grand slam as the form player following his Qatar Open victory but he could not live up to his favourite's billing.

This week's tournament gives Murray the chance to put that behind him, and he will also hope to gain significant ranking points following his loss in the first round to Dutchman Robin Haase last year.

Indeed, the 21-year-old will view the next few months as an ideal opportunity to put pressure on world No 3 Novak Djokovic, who, unlike Murray, has considerable points to defend. The second seed will be wary of his first-round opponent in Rotterdam, however, having lost two of his three previous matches against Ljubicic.

Their last meeting came in the final of the Qatar Open in 2007, where the Croat triumphed in straight sets, while they shared a victory apiece the previous year. However, Ljubicic has tumbled down the rankings from his career-high position of number three in May 2006 and is currently only just inside the top 50 at 48.

The 29-year-old's last ATP Tour title came in 2007 and he struggled with back injuries last year. Ljubicic pushed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to four sets in the second round of the Australian Open but failed to get past the last 16 in his home event in Zagreb last week, having never previously lost before the final.

Despite his losing record, Murray should be too strong for Ljubicic having improved significantly since their last meeting while the Croat has gone in the other direction. There was disappointment for the Scot yesterday, though, as he and countryman James Auckland lost 6-3, 6-4 to fourth seeds Julian Knowle and Andy Ram in the first round of the doubles.

Rotterdam also sees the return to action of world No 1 Rafael Nadal following his stunning victory over Roger Federer in the Australian Open final.

Nadal and third seed Nikolay Davydenko are in the other half of the draw from Murray along with Tsonga and Gael Monfils, giving the Briton a good chance of reaching the final at least. If victorious today, Murray will face either Andreas Seppi or Thiemo De Bakker in the second round while Gilles Simon, David Ferrer and Robin Soderling are the other seeds in his half.

Well done Andy, first round safely over 6-3 6-2. :)

To be honest it was a gift from Ivan Ljubicic, who had a Coria-esque attack of the yips on serving - except for the fact than when he wasn't serving faults he was serving aces.

Yes Andy is doing well again :) I think the A.O. was a good wake up call for Andy. He can't think he can just show up and the other player will think oh it's Murray I can't defeat him. Andy has to work hard and keep focused in every Match.

Yes, quarter-final is a lot better than losing first round. . . and you have to fancy his chances against Gicquel. If he manages to concentrate that is. His low level of motivation in the early rounds worries me sometimes. Yes, it's great to play against the top guys - but you have to beat the others first, to meet the top ones. At least these days he does seem to be coming up with the wins even when he doesn't seem very motivated.

That ankle problem is worrying, though. It didn't seem to bother him much until nearly the end, but he was positively hobbling then. Still, if he gets beaten in the final because of injury, so be it. Thank goodness he has withdrawn from Marseille next week.

Murray takes the title 63 46 60 but a bit of a disappointing final after the first set - the second was baffling and the third was completely one-sided. Shame for Nadal with his knee injury and respect to him for staying out there, taking the beating until the end. I admire him.

Betty
02-15-2009, 02:20 PM
yes scoob he is a champion
andy played well the first set ...but really he nedds to improve his concentration..sometime u can play very well but loses vs players like rafa at the 100% or fed so better when u have the opportunities keep them
btw i'm happy for his title..sorry for that injury

waiting for a andy played so boring and he was luckly gm thread;D u'll have to work scoob;)

Congrats to Andy on the win :yippee: I had no coverage of the Tournament at all. So I was using a scoring site. I couldn't believe the 6-0 3rd Set until I came on here and found out that Rafa had hurt his knee. I'm sorry about Rafa because I like him too  But Andy still seems to come and go in Matches. Andy seems to have gotten stronger physically which I thought he needed. But now I think he needs to get mentally stronger.

Apparently Andy said on TV (I didn't hear it, I was watching on a livestream) that he lost focus during the medical timeout. Yes, well that was pretty obvious! He'll really have to work on that, it's not the first time it has happened.

Nice that Rafa didn't retire at the first sign of trouble unlike somebody I could mention. . . and nice to see the respect between the two players at the end.

It was a shame it had to end that way; I think Andy thoroughly deserved that first set, my only worry was whether he could keep that standard up. I felt he needed to win in straight sets because is so good at coming back, but that second set was really weird. Still, all the record books will say is that Andy won and has his 10th title.

It must be a bit worrying for the Rafa fans that he is having trouble with his knees so early in the season.

Poor Rafa but what a hero playing till the bitter end, every time I watch a Rafa match I get more impressed at how he handles himself!

And well done Andy, that first set was terrific, how the fuck you lost the second I'll never know, you should've put Rafa out of his misery!

Rest your ankle and come back stronger for Dubai! :)
