SEGA has confirmed another instalment in the Virtua Tennis series is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Virtua Tennis 2009 will feature real-life ballsmashers like Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams and Roger Federererer. New players for this year include Andy "Come on Tim" Murray and ladies French Open champion Ana Ivanovic.

Volleying, serving and net play have been improved, and there's now "player stumbling" to "add a new dimension to matches". Along with traditional singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches, the game will feature the official Davis Cup.

The World Tour Mode has been spruced up, and now includes a fully integrated online ranking system. There are more Player Creation options than ever and a new-look Tennis Store with more than 800 items to choose from.

There will be brand new Court Games to play, and we're told to "look out for crocodiles, fruit and pirates". Wise advice generally, of course.

Virtua Tennis 2009 is out this May, according to the press release. Which was written by someone who should be given a payrise for managing not to use any phrases like "smash hit" or "new balls please" in the entire thing.

Best tennis game franchise around. Murray is playable on this one. ;) No word yet on whether Djokovic is on the roster. No doubt Monfils will be back, since he seems to always be playable in tennis games, quite randomly. Up until last year Monfils had made no impact on the senior tour, yet you couldn't buy a tennis game that didn't have him as part of the roster.

Sounds good, hopefully they cut out the fucking annoying diving and it'll be near perfect.

 at Federer not being on the front cover, he'll cry to Mirka about that for sure :awww:

Diving becomes a non-issue once you become really good. When you're a top player, diving ends up being a last resort. I remember when I started playing VT3 and I couldn't hit a shot without diving. Of course, I then went on to become the number 2 ranked player online. :p

Yeah, surprised Federer hasn't made any sort of appearance on the cover. Times they are a changing. Federer just doesn't draw the crowds anymore.

Did you play it on PC?

The problem with the PS3 version was it had no online play. They'll surely add it for 2009. It was good fun playing 2 players, but it was damn boring against the computer, online is a must.

It's still too arcadey for my liking, the fact that you can never make unforced errors as well is annoying. I suppose it's aimed at the more casual tennis fan, Top Spin is for the serious tennis fans.

I didn't like Top Spin. There's no depth to it. Once you've got to grip with the controls, there's no real depth.

I have VT3 for the 360, mate. I agree with you about the lack of UEs. That's a downside. It is pretty arcadey, but it has loads of depth. The offline mode isn't very good.

I liked the gameplay of Top Spin 2 the best, but the players moved way to slow in that game.

Virtua tennis looks great, but like you guys said the diving is ridiculous, the volleying is kinda bad and few UE's.

If they could improve the volleying add a fancy dropshot, it'll be a great game.

You can do dropshot volleys but its quite hard to pull off, and only the best players can pull it off, its a secret shot.

great! I still play VT3 with friends from time to time on the PS3 and it's quite fun, and you won't dive that much if you are really good at it, also the serve is much more effective in PS3 than Xbox360 (played both) and returns are more challenging in PS3 when the serve is maxed which is good, a Roddick's max serve can only be returned with a slice after you have stepped back a few steps

Love doing that. The ultimate is angled drop volleys. Hardest shot in the game to pull off, but you win the point pretty much outright if you pull it off. I usually approach and hit standard drop volleys, which takes a lot of practice. They usually win you the point too.

I took 3 months out and I'm rusty as hell just now, though. I bought a new tv and I'm struggling to get used to it. It's dark right at the top, so I see the ball late and it screws up my net play pretty badly.

I'm sure you could get back to how you was playing, as most people know that your a quality player on your day, but rank IMO is so flawed I can't be bothered playing it, too many laggers, cheaters and double accounts it does my head in. I quit rank, after I got fucked over when I was on a 84 match winning streak in doubles, wanted that 100 so bad

Yeah, that has happened to me on many occasions. Had I received credit for all my wins, I would have managed to be at number 1 at some stage. Then again, the same can be said for a lot of the top guys. There are too many ways to fuck other players over. In a laggy match, you can conceivably induce lets all day if you want and just wait for your chance. That's one thing I hope they sort out for VT 2009, but I don't think it's something they can solve. Pretty sure it will always be that way when someone from the UK plays an Aussie or someone from Japan (and vice versa).

Something like a feature which shows the connection between the players before a match would be good, so you can back out if necesarry, or servers for the continents. The thing is, even with this, you get people like Tihav who can induce lets at will (btw Tihav and that kiyoshi are the same guy, and unfortuantely I know who it is...)

Tihav is a pretty horrible player. I had to win points maybe 5 times or more against him because he kept inducing lets. He still only managed to get to a tiebreak.

I can't wait for VT2k9. I honestly believe I'm one of the individuals in the world having played the most Virtua Tennis 3. I play a couple of tournaments every time I'm at the computer. If I watch a movie on my TV, I often play VT3 alongside. It has something to it which makes it not addicting, but soothing in a way. I've played a fair bit of TS3 on my PS3 aswell but it's too much of a hassle to turn the PS3 on and wait. It's like 10sec in VT3 and you're serving already.

I'm looking forward to the online ranking systems. Look out for me :D

The ONLY tennis game worth anything is Top Spin 3, which has a lot more depth than the smashcourt or horrendously arcade virtua tennis series. You have to play Top Spin 3 for months until you know about 90% of its nuances.
I wouldn't say it took that long. I learned almost everything in a week or 2. The power button is extremely hard to pull off though. The ball goes through the air too slow as well. Super Tennis is probably the most enjoyable tennis game and that was on Super Nintendo. Tennis games these days.

I know this isn't necessarily Virtua Tennis 2009 related, but since you guys were talking about PES and Fifa I think it's fair that I mention it.

Not a single tennis game a few years ago could get players right  :help:

Top Spin 1 (for PS2) had Federer, who came to net all the time and was frankly easy to pass. Same game, Hewitt would always UE on the 2nd or 3rd shot. Then of course Robredo was probably one of the best players on that game :spit:

Smash Court Tennis 2 (for PS2) had Hewitt who was virtually unbeatable. I think Gasquet had a powerful FH but not BH, and Roddick couldn't do anything except serve decent. I would do the Spectator Mode and Hewitt would lose only 2 games in a best of 3 set match to Roddick

I like Top Spin 3, it is a bit slow and I blow at power shots...but that's better than all the other tennis games which are frankly easy to master.
