Congrats to Rafa on his first HC slam, and it wasn't against an inexperienced mug, but an 8 time HC slam winner, on his least favorite surface, after playing the longest match in AO history.

He absolutely deserved this, and let there be no doubt who the best player in the world is.

Deserved win from Nadal. He knows how to take chances.

A win for Roger shouldn't have been fair, you can't win a match, wasting nearly 15 bp chances.

And also awesome rallies in the mid of the 4th set, Nadal once again proves that he's a top defender.

Smoke944

02-01-2009, 12:21 PM
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Federer can't beat Nadal in a match, same thing is happening with Djokovic too. He completely breaks them down mentally by giving them some rope and then cutting it. He's a master on court mental player.

Federer won't beat Nadal in a final again. I mean he went mentally Gasquet on us here. I got to say, Nadal deserved to win this. He was always the more likely to break and Roger didn't serve too well. Rafa can have his 7 and 8 major wins this year. That's just astonishing.

If he keeps this up, he will probably break Sampras' record sooner as Roger's days seem to be over.

dj_mercury
02-01-2009, 12:22 PM
Fed lost the match in the third, his serve returns on bps were atrocious. No idea what happened to him in the fifth, he was just not there and Nadal had not to do anything special really in that final set. Odds on Nadal being the one beating the record of GS of Sampras and doing a year gran slam?

Faker and Murray would of wiped the court with either one of them IMO, match was full of choking (mainly the pussy with a big nose), and bad tactics, Nadal just needed to be solid, which he was. That's me done for today, and probably for a while.

A choke from Federer, but to hell with that.
Rafa, what a champion! I am a Fed fan first and foremost, and I do think Nadal is Nadull, but that's just taste while the fact is this man is the best fighter in tennis. Damn!
The best player in the world is clear now. If he wins double digit Slams (some hardcourt ones, plus Wimby a couple of times), there will be legitimate GOAT talk.

Brilliant to see Rafa play like that. He's solidified himself as #1 in the world right here today.

Roger just can't beat Rafa unless everything is firing. His serve was terrible today, and the fifth was pathetic. I truly hope he doesn't finish on 13 slams, but he better hope he doesn't meet Rafa in another final - it's just a shocking match-up.

I don't see why folks keep calling Fed the GOAT. Guys! Fed is a great player but he is mentally weak. He reminds of Gasquet in that department. He is too arrogant to change his tactics. I thought he had Nadal figured out in 2007, but 2008 Wimbledon happened and now after this I don't think Fed will turn this rivalry around. It's over guys! Fed better hope that Nadal doesn't catch the slam record before he does.

Well congrats to Nadal. He played so well out there tonight and that's some of the best returning I've seen him do. In big points, yet again, Federer came up small. That last set was horribly disgusting... was he throwing the match? No effort at all and you contrast that with how hard Nadal was fighting, even while limited physically.

Federer is done. His detractors may be right about him beating up against weak competition. When his biggest rival looks him in the eye on the biggest stage, Federer's lost the battle 5 out of 7 times.... Not a great champion IMO.

The sad truth is, if the situation calls for heart and guts and balls, Federer just doesn't have them when playing Rafa. What a ridiculous bad 5th set from the supposed GOAT.

Congratulations to Rafa. He deserved to win that match as much as Federer deserved to lose it. Nadal played to win and Roger played not to lose. When you do that, you usually do lose. Contrast Verdasco's aggressive play with Federer's conservative approach. It's disappointing watching Roger play exactly the kind of game Rafa wants him to play. I think Roger will eventually pass Sampras' slam total but it will be because someone else beat Rafa for him. It's obvious they are closer now in tennis ability and Rafa is way ahead in guts and mental strength.

It's so frustrating. The whole match I feel that Roger can win because he plays points of which you think that that's the way to beat Nadal. He wins the fourth and then in the fifth he simply lets go. Damn it, on this surface Roger can beat Nadal if he just plays agressive enough.
Tony Roche says that Roger plays tennis the way it should be played. He's right, and Nadal plays tennis the way it is not supposed to be played. That's why I find it a pity that he's got Roger once more in the ropes.

Congratulations to Rafael Nadal on winning the 2009 Australian Open in 5 sets over Roger Federer. :) Nadal now joins Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker with 6 grand slam singles titles. And congratulations to Nadal and Federer for taking tennis to heights it hasn't seen since the Bjorn Borg/John McEnroe rivalry in the early 1980's. :D

Jesus, atleast steal the French title now Roger!

Q. Do you have any of those sort of things [new achievements - gaitare] in your mind when you came into the start of year?

ROGER FEDERER: No. More maybe kind of the thing starting the year well at Australian Open, winning maybe potentially your first French, getting Wimbledon back after the epic I had with Rafa there, and then winning my sixth at the US Open.

Do you see the differences in meaning in his opinion on winning FO and Wimbledon? MAYBE POTENTIALLY? He really doubts himself, and that doubt won't be relieved after today. I HOPE he'll do something big there.

Roger doesn't need a coach, he needs a shrink. It's all in his head. He needs to leave the respect in the locker room and just play his normal game. Today he played pathetic. Virtually non-existent 1st serve and just too passive (especially on break poins). Not at any point did he find his groove. One or two good points here and there, immediately followed by crappy errors. Good fight by Nadal though. Nobody hits the kind of winners when pushed wide as he does, and his cross court backhand is fast becoming his most dangerous shot. Congrats!

Federer is done. His detractors may be right about him beating up against weak competition. When his biggest rival looks him in the eye on the biggest stage, Federer's lost the battle 5 out of 7 times.... Not a great champion IMO.

The match was full of tension and drama, but the quality of play wasn't that high. Both made unforced errors, even Rafa made silly errors that he doesn't usually make. Federer served like sh1t, what was that? Had he served better the match might've been tighter...

Federer's tactics were also off, I mean he won many of the points where he sliced to Nadal's backhand, but didn't do it nearly often enough IMO.

Well, congrats to Nadal fans anyway, shame that Roger couldn't equal Pete's record but he has a few years still left in him.

Sad moment for Roger. Though this is exactly the reason Federer is such a beloved champion in spite of dominating the sport the way he has. Very few champions have that kind of support even from the non-bandwagoners.

Well done to Rafa, he did exactly what he needed to do to win. Clutch as usual, too good.

Roger was not deserving of the title. Atrocious serving, horrible play on the big points. No penetration off the forehand. The only things he did well tonight were hit the backhand decently and move well to his forehand. Embarrassing to perform like that.

Fed is a looser. If anybody knows the perfect recipe to gift the match to Nadal no matter what the situation is, it is Federer. Fed is not the GOAT. A GOAT plays his best when it counts like Nadal does, like Sampras did. Federer plays his worst in this situations. He would have beaten a tired Nadal with his B Game today, but brought his C Game when it counted. I can't fucking believe this shit! Fed is a girly man... 37 % 1st serve in the 2nd set for example. and what was up in the 5th? Fed just disappeared and gifted the match to Nadal. Real Champion like.....
Fed is a mental wreck when playing Nadal. I hope he never ever says he looks forward to play Nadal again. I bet he shits his pant when he somebody even mentions Nadals name! and please Nadal, never ever say Fed is the favorite again. Nadal owns Federer about as bad as Federer owns Roddick. If Federer could start the Game 2 sets and 5:3 up he would find a way to lose by serving DF's and netting some easy backhands....

I'm sick of this shit. Mods can delete my account now. As I have said, if Federer loses I'm done here. Bye all.

That means he is weak, at least when playing Nadal. It's actually ridiculous how sloppy he gets.

OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.
After US Open people were saying "WHAT A CHAMP, RECOVERED AFTER WIMBY! GO ROGER!". Now all of a sudden he's a pussy and a crybaby and a loser. All those knee-jerk reactions are truly disgusting. So, he lost. He lost to the guy who is BETTER than him at the moment. So freaking what? Federer isn't chasing Rafa, he is chasing history. Rafa has his own Slams to win to catch up with Roger.

GOAT talk is complete BS as well. There won't be a definitive GOAT in tennis until somebody wins 25 Slams with a couple of Grand Slams to boot. Laver is up there. Sampras is up there. Borg is up there (the guy retired because he couldn't win, how's that for being a pussy?). Federer is up there and Rafa has a huge chance to get there if he wins some 4 more Slams or so. They are the Pantheon of tennis. Am I making no sense at all?

This loss hurts.

... Interesting to see if Nadal can dominate for a lengthy period of time. 6 slams in the era of Federer at age 22.

Today, officially, the new era has begun. Federer has one more chance and that is if he was to win Wimbly and US - doubt he will though.

I think you misunderstood me here. Some people just don't Roger and that's fine. I don't like Roddick. But when Roger beats let's say Murray, I don't go claiming that Murray is crap and he should retire and so on. There is no reason to. But some people here just like to rub it in. Roger lost. Big deal. He didn't die or anything. It's just sports. And crying doesn't make you a pussy. The presentation, well Federer knows how close he is to the Sampras record and also the fact that Laver was there at the end, didn't help him.

Yes, that result is going to hurt him, but the waterworks did take away from Nadal's moment at the presentation, not that this was intentional.

Because you clearly know that none of the people mocking Federer have ever been good at anything in their entire lives, just by looking at their usernames (that said, those native English speakers who make looser/loser errors may qualify). Go cry on international TV and come back when you when have a more appropriate retort.

In other news, Federer just singlehandedly made tennis the least manly sport ever. Who saw that coming?

In other words, if Federer played better than Nadal, Federer would have won. Thanks, for that.

Hats off to Nadal :worship:

I was never a fan of his game but one thing is for sure, Nadal is on his way to tennis immortality. The fight in this man, is just unmatchable and I don't think I have ever seen anyone who is willing to give his life on the court, as much as Nadal does, ever!! Congrats to his fans, this guy might end up being the GOAT (time will tell).

Roger, proud to be a fan of you, I dont think he actually belives he can beat Nadal. But his game is sublime to watch and I will always be his fan. :D

Two wonderful champions and two legends of this era!!

Gotta say, I enjoy watching them both, but I did root just a bit more for Nadal.
That said, I felt bad watching Fed crumble in the 5th and nearly cried myself when he broke down during his speech.
I do hope he gets his 14th.
:worship::worship::worship: to Rafa, the boy with the huge heart and never-surrender attitude!

Here's to another year of great tennis!:)

What can you say. I feel for Roger. He is a true champion, he played some good tennis today, but it just wasn't enough, he just wasn't strong enough mentally. Some of you guys say he is a pussy, but it's not easy to overcome things like that. These "demons" are always lurking around the corner, you can't think anything else, it's just there... And it eats you. But don't worry, Roger won't go away, he still has at least one Slam in him. Congrats to the classy Rafa fans, enjoy the victory, you support maybe the greatest warrior in sports history. Well deserved victory. Roger, be strong.

He can beat him, but i think he will lose all matches vs Rafa from now, no matter what surface..

Federer will never beat Nadal. Here's the routine:

Moonball forehand to Federer's shit backhand => short reply/middle of the court => Flat backhand or a moonball down the line/inside out to get Federer running => middle of the court => Another moonball to Federer's shit backhand. Done. Every match is like this and you know what's funny? Federer makes absolutely no adjustment to improve.

It's simple. Nadal was already handicapped and yet Federer couldn't win. If Nadal didn't have to grind to hard to beat Verdasco the score line would have easily been straight sets without any tie breaks.

Vamos Rafa.

The ceremony is more heartbreaking than an episode of Grey's Anatomy (back when it was good). Really feel sorry for Roger. For all the posters who criticize him, Roger's entitled to as much tears as he likes. This is the record-equalling match, the one that would go to history book. Do you see how many football players, atheletes, etc... crying when they lost, and their stakes are much less than this?

Other players have lost slam finals without having a complete emotional breakdown. Many times those players were playing in their one chance at slam glory; yet, they managed to keep it together during the trophy presentation.

When Novotna cried on the Duchess' shoulder in 1993, it seemed tragic. This cry-fest just seemed ridiculous.

Rafa was clearly embarrassed by Federer's breakdown. Oddly, Federer has never seemed that sympathetic to the players he has vanquished in slam finals.

Have you ever given your all (your life, everything) to something just to see your dreams shattered right in front of your eyes? Wouldn't that hurt? I have been a pro, not in tennis, but a pro regardless, and I know what it means to have someone take away your dream. So stop your mind-numbingly stupid argument here.

There wasn't anything stupid about my "argument". I responded to what you wrote. Don't get your panties in a twist because you didn't mean quite what you wrote.

Now, I'm pretty sure that you're taking your professional sport fandom a little too seriously here. Watching sports is meant to be fun. An escape. Entertainment. It's not meant to make you so damn SAD.

Of course, Roger can be as sad as he'd like; he's actually invested in what he does. That doesn't make it any less funny. At the end of the day, Roger still eats. So, you'll have to excuse me if I'm not torn up over this. :D

That's the point !

Then I guess all those American football players who cry after losing the Super Bowl, soccer players who cry after losing a match, and basketball players who cry after losing are all “just pansies”. I should tell this to those football players at my school who cried when they lost a tight match and missed getting into the State Finals.

I’m sure this is all so much easier to criticize and condemn from behind a computer screen.

Some extreme nastiness in this thread that I've not seen before.

Well, I've seen it before, but I certainly didn't expect such a high degree of it in this case - and certainly not from people who appear to be Federer's own (former?) supporters

But of course, if you lose a tough match you're a pussy, and real men never cry, just like women can't play tennis: these are the facts of life according to GM, and I only wonder why I continue to be astonished by it time and again.

Congratulations to Nadal; he thoroughly deserved the win, especially coming from the epic SF.

Well done Rafa on a great physical and mental effort. He deserved the win and will definitely have the edge against Federer on all surfaces from now on.

Disgusted with Federer's play in the 5th set. Why would he go away after having the momentum having won the 4th set, and also knowing Rafa may be tired after his SF? There was no way Roger should have lost the 3rd set after having so many bp chances, in the 1st set was up 4-2 and serving too. Just a match of wasted opportunities for Roger.

I think its great that Roger is not afraid to show his emotions on tv too. He definitely isn't the first sportsperson to cry after losing a final.

I agree with you, a lot of Federer's fans are plastic, they only support him when he wins, same in football really, you see Arsenal fans go crazy after they lose. Only the true fans will not troll this thread with some terrible comments.

And these stereotypes that are on MTF is a sign of how low-life people are on here and I fully agree with you when I am astonished too by how biased people are here, how they have pretty much no knowledge of tennis and comment on Federer being a pansy.

You try being the best ever tennis player and tell me if losing 5 times in a final, on 3 different surfaces, to the same player, will make you stay cool and full of composure through out.

Where next for Roger Federer...I really don't know.

Roger will be fine. He did better than he did at the Australian Open last year. Sooner or later he will find a way to beat Nadal. It's not that he hasn't the game to do it. He needs to adapt his tactics and keep his head cool.

l_mac

Federer will be known as the first TOP 10 player that Nadal has beaten in HC slams.
Idiot.
I wonder where Glenn is? Only fun thing will now be to hear him come with his rants against Nadal.
Crying, I'd imagine and making doping allegations in thread which aren't moderated.

:D
Faker and Murray would of wiped the court with either one of them IMO, match was full of choking (mainly the pussy with a big nose), and bad tactics, Nadal just needed to be solid, which he was. That's me done for today, and probably for a while.
Rubbish.
a sad day for hard court tennis indeed...a moonballing bunnie wins Aussie Open against choking legend..what a disgrace, Roger should hide his face in shame by losing to this pusher - no serve, crappy tactics, and of course world class choking, damn expected, I'm done with tennis:mad:
:wavey: C ya.
Never thought I'd say this but I'd rather have seen Andrew Murray in this final. And I'm sure we will in the future.
:retard: What has that got to do with anything?
nadal is a class act...
i just hope his fucking fans would be 1/5th as classy

now a murder among fans will ensure after this result

:retard: Rafa's fans are being unbelievably respectful, for sure if the situation had been reversed we would be seeing something diffferent. The whiniest, most hate filled comments have come from (supposed) Fed fans.

I can't believe Rafa won that match, and is the Australian Open Champion. :worship: And the dignity, calss and humility he showed after the match were just amazing. He is a special, special player and person. Tennis is lucky to have him.

Painful loss for Federer. I don't know WTF was up with his serve - maybe the back problems from last year? or maybe just that he knows Rafa returns his serve well and was going for too much. I hope he will be fine.

Awkwardness is funny, doctor. This is precisely why shows like "The Office" work. Things that shouldn't be funny, occasionally are.

I'd like a new therapist. This one bores me. And is wrong. A lot.
