I heavily thought about the name of this thread but couldn't came up with anything else ( :o ). I don't think it's necessary to make some indoor or outdoor threads when each of these tournament can be played on one or the other surface. So one thread to go from here to the clay season seems well enough for me.

These are the tournaments to look forward to :

- SA Tennis Open February 2-8, Johannesburg, South Africa
- ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament February 9-15, Rotterdam, Netherlands
- Open 13 February 16-22, Marseille, France
- BNP Paribas Open March 9-22, Indian Wells, California, U.S.A.
- Sony Ericsson Open March 23-April 5, Miami, Florida, U.S.A.

Feel free to comment as usual :)

I just hope that he can find his tennis and win one tournament or two along the way :D

Edit: It's also important to note that he has little or no points at all to defend on that period : lost at the first round in Marseille last year, absent from the other tournaments except a third round in indian wells and a second round in Miami. Our boy can certainly regain the points lost at Melbourne with some good showing :)

SA can be a really good place to truly launch his season : little draw, good atmosphere with a lot of fans and a place important to him.

Allez jojo !

Here is the draw of SA :

He is lucky to slip by Baggy or Chardy. Should be a good place to accumulate some wins.

seriously..I like this guy, but what the hell is he doing? played twice before Melbourne, went pretty deep at AO and now has a schedule which includes right after the Oz Open three other tournaments in a row, playing even doubles apparently, well he's the one to know what's best for him:o

I just hope he makes the final in Johannesburg (which simply has to happen with this mug draw) and withdraws from Rotterdam then

Good win for Jo. From the word go, it was clear he wanted to blow his opponent off the court and entertain the crowd. Alves, to his credit, had other plans and played a really good first set. Jo, on the other hand, was a little over-exuberant at first, serving aces followed by double faults, leading to low first serve percentage.

He got his rhythm going in full flow in the second set, and the crowd was duly entertained. The powerful forehands, followed by sublime drop shots are a joy to behold.

It's going to be our turn in the next few minutes now.

Vliegen today. He can be tricky, but I don't think he has what it takes to manage the power of Jo.

MacArthur
02-06-2009, 05:12 PM
First set Jo : 6/4.

It's tougher than expected, primarily because Vliegen is taking the net alot and it's really hard to pass someone at the net in these conditions (the altitude). Jo is also making a lot of UEs.

I hope he is going to get this a little better in the second.

Anyone noticed he has lost a LOT of weight? :speakles:

Compared to when? I actually thought he had gained weight at the end of last year, and I couldn't quite say how he was in Australia. He still looked to me a little bigger then than at the beginning of last year.

MacArthur

Jo is on the court heating the ball with Gil.

A french final to come with Chardy if he wins this.

MacArthur
02-07-2009, 01:40 PM
First set 6/3 : slow start, but solid afterwards.

Gil seems to be a typical claycourt player. It would be more interesting to see him against Jo on clay. Here it's not going to be very tough.

MacArthur

First set Jo : 7/6

Huta Galun is a good indoor player, not a very great one though, but it's a little troublesome for a rusty Jo. The serve is average and his shots are still south africans : a little flying all over the place. But it's a good opponent to take the indoor rythm.

It's been really weird watching Tsonga play for some time. I don't know if I'm alone with this but I always get the feeling there's something wrong with him. He'll play some good points, then throw some really crazy or completely lazy UEs, even for his standards. His movement seems weird also, except that sometimes he starts to run everywhere like a rabbit like at the end today. But somehow he almost always manages to win those matches he's supposed to. I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing : he has good enough results, and obviously has figured out how to win ugly (by that I mean when he doesn't play very well, his game is never ugly), but he never looks 100%. I read somewhere that he was disappointed by his results in Australia, that he felt he had a good opportunity but couldn't completely defend his chances.

He looks agitated also, for apparently no reason. Since the beginning of last year I've honestly rarely seen him look alright : at the end in Thailand, in the last two matches in Paris...

oranges
02-12-2009, 10:36 PM
He didn't look agitated to me in the 2nd set, but did in the first, both by reactions and some shot selection.
I'm under the impression he's not completely adjusted to the courts here, hence the ups and downs that are not due to simply rushing it more than necessary.
When is he playing tomorrow?

oranges
02-12-2009, 10:38 PM
Found my answer, not before 7:30 PM. Good luck, he looked better today than Nadal did, let's keep it that way ;)

MacArthur
02-12-2009, 11:00 PM
I think you are looking too much into it, simplet. Sure, he is not at 100% physically, sure he is playing solid at best, average at worst, and sure, he is not showing an incredible concentration in his matches so far (doesn't run on all balls sometimes, and running like a rabbit the rest of the time), but in all of these points, this is just the nature of the fool. :D
It was exactly the same last year between the pitiful losses against Federer (who he was litteraly watching playing against him btw ) or the pathetic match against Benneteau in semi-final at Lyon, and all of his matches at Bercy, particularly the one against Blake where he was blasting him off court. You can't expect him to always be creative or perfect on a court. He is doing with what he has and what he can at a definite moment. Plus there are some trend in his plays : always been average at the beginning of a new tourney, but solid when it matters, always resting on his serve, but firing aces after aces when he wants it. He also takes time at the beginning of a match to read his opponent serves and his game, to finally roll on him once he knows him (cf Djokovic or Tursunov today). You also have to remember that he needs many matches to start the engine.
On court, I think he is the same raging beast he was at bercy  ( and the reason why we like him so much  ).

On the match : he was average at the beginnning, but firing at the end (see  ). Tursunov was also lucky a decent amount of times on his volleys and really solid off his serves, not much when Jo has him on his pocket at the end.

The match against Nadal is quite the unknown quantity IMO. If the match up is obviously on Jo's side, I think it's a pride thing for both of them. Nadal can't lose against Jo for his status and for his pride, Jo surely badly wants to beat the world number one. The question is how much energy Jo has saved after 6 consecutives win and 6 full weeks of competition, and how much is he going to power up before tomorrow like he always do for the big matches  .

Answers tomorrow at 19H30 local time.

02-13-2009, 08:34 PM
Frustrating end after he put up a great fight to level the match, but he never looked great tonight anyway. He looked far too sloppy to beat Nadal throughout the match, would have been a miracle if Jo'd won. Ah well, never mind, hopefully he rests up and has a good tournament in Marseille now.

simplet
02-13-2009, 09:53 PM
Ah ah I'm pretty sure you guys see what I meant now. Really weird match : he never looked good, survived mostly with his serve in spite of countless UEs, until the second set tie-break where he was absolutely brillant. Then a weird third set in which his level was not so bad, except for two games where he played terribly after leading 30-0 both times (I think?).

I don't know; I like the fact that he manages to do ok even though he doesn't seem well, but it always feels like he could do more, don't you think? Also, he always looks rushed, like he has to win the point right now. I watched a little bit of his match against Nadal last year and he had a lot more patience in the points... Maybe it's because of the surface?

MacArthur
02-13-2009, 10:57 PM
Yes, I see what you mean, but between the tiredness from six weeks of continuous playing, the big difference of experience between the world number one and Jo in these kind of match, his doubtfull physical state (the back is maybe a little too stiff)... I think we can give him a break.

Eventhough, it's true, he is too peaky during his matches right now, more than he was before. I agree with you also to say that the Jo we are seeing play right now isn't by any marge a full fit Jo. What he lacks the more is the creativity, a little bit of crazyness in his matches. He was also terrible at returning the serve of Nadal tonight, except some rare good games.

But the season is long, we can only hope for the best and his base level is still enough to beat 90% of the tour right now. That's a big consolation prize. I also hope that he can do a full season this year, it would already be something great.

simplet
02-13-2009, 11:22 PM
I'm not blaming him or anything, of course, I don't know if that was clear. What I want to say, basically, is that maybe the times where he is going to be completely healthy and in good form are going to be pretty rare. I'm starting to realize that. Not only does he very often have serious injuries that keep him from playing entirely, but even most of the rest of the time he's not in top conditions. I don't think we should expect him to ever have long periods where he can give his all.

I think you're right, I see a lot of people around MTF having unrealistic expectations of Jo, always waiting for that AO magic from last year every match. It's better to keep a sense of perspective about things like you have.

I agree with this in the sense that I think he is never going to be the GOAT. He doesn't have the game or the fitness for it. He is a streaky player, with only one constant weapon, his serve of course. That doesn't mean that he can't realise his objectives : be number one and win a grand slam.
He can do it of course, but on a short period of time. He can have an agassi type of career, with ups and downs rythmed by his injuries (I hope not of course, but :o ).

( Euh

Or maybe not
In tennis, you never know.

-------> I leave it here just in case I shall be wrong in the future. :p )

More importantly, for the moment we should focus on his return in the top ten before RG. I think it's totaly possible. I am not really good in rankings, does anyone know if he can make points at Marseille ? If they count only two 250 tournaments on one year, he is already full with Bangkok and Johannesburg, even if it's always cool to win a tournament.

I think they'll leave the points from more 250 tournaments in until enough 500 tournaments are played to warrant dropping them, meaning that the points from Marseille would be in for a while. He's 195 points behind Nalbandian at 10 now (Monfils could go up, though, this week), so good chance to get there before RG.

I'm sad at the loss because the impression was the match was on his racket. Before the very end 2nd set, I thought he was making too many errors to go way with a win, but he was clutch most of the time when needed and then played that amazing TB. By the time of that adorable legs-kicking-bum run to the bench at the changeover, I thought we're in the saddle again :inlove: Someone should prompt the Rotterdam crowd to give the guy more of an adrenaline rush and perhaps there wouldn't be one UE too many ;)
In any case, good run for him here after South Africa and good luck in Marseille.

Best of luck for Marseille Jo, I think he will have a great run here as he loves playing in front of his home crowd and they surely love him. The thing I so admire about Jo as others have said, is that even when he does not feel 100% he sill fights and gives all that he can. Allez Jo.

Good luck in Marseille Jo! Belated congratulations on winning Johannesburg title - it's only fitting that he should be the inaugural title holder, being a great ambassador for the African region. But of course, he won purely on merit, he was simply the best player of the tournament. So proud of him.

Also had the pleasure of watching his QF match against Nadal in Rotterdam. It was an exciting match that could have gone either way, and Nadal was just too solid on the day. There’ll be more chances for Jo to beat the #1 player of the world.

Jo will be playing second tomorrow in the afternoon session (two matchs in the morning, two in the afternoon and two in the evening.)
He's up against Golubev, anyone heard of him before?
They play after Djokovic/Chardy, so probably around 4pm.

Golubev is a former Russian player, who now plays for Kazakhstan. His best result was in St. Petersburg-2008, where he reached final and lost to Andy Murray :) However, this year Andrey hasn't won a match, though he competed in 3 tournaments. Think he is not a problem for Jo ;)

Oh thank you. Yeah I think I heard of a Russian changing to Kazakh before. Well I can't wait to see this match ^^

Yeah, Kazakhstan Tennis Federation is now pretty rich, so they offer some good contracts for players... And if Russian girls who now play under their flag are, objectively, useless for Russian Fed Cup team, Golubev could be a Davis Cup team member after few years... And i've been shocked when Karatancheva took their citizenship too
Well, this is offtop, really  I'm sorry :)
By the way, our satellite TV shows Marseille, but I'm afraid they won't show Jo's match, because on that time they plan to show WTA Dubai :o Hope their will be a livestream...

Yeah don't apologize, it's very interesting :) So isn't there any good Kazakh-born players if they have to pay for the Russian ones to play there ?

About the streams, you have a few possibilities. First there is the tournament official website stream :
http://www.open13.fr/web-tv.html
You just have to install something and then it works. But the sound is very very low.

The best quality vid are on the betting sites : betfair or bet365. You just need to register without putting money on your account, it should work if you're not in France.

There is also http://www.channelsurfing.net/ or http://www.atdhe.net/ if the above doesn't work for you.

Ok :) No, Kazakhstan hasn't had any serious tennis players, their first number was Alexey Kedriouk - http://www.atpworldtour.com/tennis/3/en/players/playerprofiles/?playernumber=K407 . Their current 3 best players (Golubev, Kukushkin, Schukin) are all native Russians, same thing with the girls, except of Karatancheva.
About the streams - yeah, thanks, I know that sites, but atdhe.net for some reason rarely work  And bet365 says that video isn't available in my region.

Yeah, it was a tight match, but it's usual against good S and V player like Mika. The match against Stepanek in DC is certainly going to look a lot like that.

Two 250 tournaments in the bag is good for the head and the points, but I hope that he is going to play more 500 now. DC tie gives some points too now, that's a good thing.

Sad result for the French team, especially as Jo would have clinched the tie in a live deciding rubber.

The French Davis Cup was genuinely a "dream team" - it's almost as if they were spoiled for choice, such was the quality of individual players.

I think the doubles rubber was the deciding factor. The Czech team made a very bold decision to front their two singles players, at the risk of tiring them for the Sunday singles matches. But, it paid off because they found themselves 2-1 up and France was on the back foot, fighting for survival on Sunday.

I honestly don't blame Simon, he did what he could, and now he can really understand the impact of Davis Cup matches and the whole atmosphere behind it. Better luck next year.

I agree Turquoise, Gilles had a real baptism of fire, French number one and most of the DC pressure all in his very first DC. Such a shame for the team but let's hope they come back bigger and stronger next year.

Yup I'm reckoning so to be honest. Either Saturday or Sunday ... all I can reccomend is you check back every day for the OOP on the official website but it'll be posted on all the players forums when each player is playing anyway. Jo's will be posted here and Gilles' will be posted on his forum

Really nothing to be aware or afraid of in his game. So a good chance to make a coup here.

Jo is definitely my outside bet for the title tbh. Federer isn't looking great, Murray is sick, Djokovic is up and down and Gilles isn't ready to win it yet so I'd definitely put Jo up there as one of my faves much as I hate to go against Gillou

First set Andreiev, 7/5.

Some awefull choice of shot from Jo. He is a little slow also.

Well, winning in three sets would be very good for the rest of the tournament if it happens.

Turquoise
03-17-2009, 06:12 AM
I’m not watching the match (unfortunately), but I can hazard a guess why Jo’s struggling in the Indian Wells conditions. The surface is quite slow, but this conflicts with the way the ball flies through the thin desert air. This could affect Jo’s reflexes and movement. I believe Safin (similar power play to Jo) has traditionally struggled at Indian Wells because of the way the ball flies. Players like Nadal do well with the slow bounce, plus the extreme top spin controls the ball.

MacArthur
03-17-2009, 06:18 AM
Well, I would not really be disappointed in case of loss. I hate those two tournaments of Indian wells and Miami : awefull conditions to play tennis (very windie), it's way too long (two weeks for a tounament of best of three matches, what the hell ! ) and it's just before the clay season which I like much, much more.

You are right, Turquoise, about the weather conditions. Though tonight, it's more jo underarchiving than anything else. He just missed an easy forehand for instance. He makes an unbeleivable amount of errors tonight.

MacArthur
03-17-2009, 06:22 AM
But it happens. We had no shitty matches since the AO, maybe even since his match against Richard at Brisbane. So it was bound to happen at some time and he could take some time to rest.

He still has a chance though if he can low those UE's.
