most, i.e. 13, nominations for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Winslet as best actress and Ledger as best supporting actor seem very likely

don't know about best male actor, don't see BP taking it, maybe Rourke

again a German movie nominated as best foreign film: Der Baader Meinhof Komplex is about the left extreme terrorism group RAF, which commited several kidnappings and bomb attacks in the seventies
not a bad movie, but not Oscar-worthy imo, would be surprised if they win it

Anybody seen this?
I'm really curious which perspective they made it from.

Pitt won't get for Best Actor IMO, his performance isn't worthy of an Oscar. I think Rourke will get it.

Button could get Best Motion Picture though, and I would like to see David Fincher getting one for Best Director.

BAFTA winners:
Slumdog Millionaire
Mickey Rourke
Kate Winslet
Heath Ledger
Penelope Cruz

same winners as at the Globes apart from Cruz for Supporting Actress,
however Winslet is not nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, which raises the latina's chances a lot, wouldn't be surprising if these 5 will grab the Oscars as well

best foreign film should be between the Israeli and the French one

Pitt wishes he'd win the Oscar. So too Rourke. :p

Ledger FTW :rocker2:

I would of loved to see Robert Downey Junior win best supporting actor, just an incredible comedic performance.

But he was unlucky that Heath Ledger delivered an excellent dark joker, even if he didnt die i reckon he would of still won it.

Meryl Streep for Doubt really should get the best actress award, stellar performance from Meryl, difficult role too.

Kate Winslet gets ass licked by hollywood and the uk for some reason, just an ordinary actor, plays very similar roles too which gets tiredsome.

Revolutionary road is one of the most depressing films i have ever seen on screen.

I'd like to see Oscar in the hands of Rourke. look, don't bother gambling all those much needed vices for what is from my point of view, the most natural thing that is to happen at this year Oscars.
If by any chance it doesn't , well it will be a hell of a vulgar surprise.
I like Pen, alot, but he had a hard time getting his first statue, and if he is to get a second one for this, fine, but nothing more that that performance, in a nothing than an average film,
than Academy outdones itself with it's toolish, seizure-inducing choices that have become her trade mark for what now... 15-20 years

hi Voo :)

well if you mean Oscar nominees, both Reader and Revolutionary road, Wrestler for sure, though it's not Aronofski's finest, well Slumdog also, ..to tell you the truth non of the high contenders are crap or must avoid, the bar rises as far as the quality is concerned, by that i mean about a bar for mainstream movies. That's what most of this films really are. The most disappointing one is Brad Button :D because it's Fincher's movie, and a low key Vicky Cristina Barcelona for which Penelope is to get a supporting actress Oscars (it's between her and Tomei) well that such a little triumph of Woody's, but only if you are a fan of his films, otherwise you'll probably hate it.
Gomorra, from italy, i don't know if it's nominated for a foreign picture but that's a great movie, i think you might like it.

Heath Ledger and WaLLE apparently are locks

Ledger has been a lock for a long time...I think he was nomitated for about 30 other 'supporting actor' awards and won every single one of them.

What I am a little curious about is why his role was flagged as a 'supporting role', I don't know what the criteria normally are distiguishing a 'major role' or a 'supporting role' but Ledger's character was a big part of the film (much more than a regular 'supporting role').Maybe it was just because the first award early last year flagged it as a 'supporting role', and then every other award followed.

It is worth it, you got it right, the rest of picture is shit with boring mechanical action scenes and a lacking script -- but the role of the Joker stands completely above it, it is disturbing and impressive. You can maybe make the connection that Ledger's mind had to be in a strange state to be able to act like had, which maybe increased the risk factors for his death.

Ledger is a new thing to me but my first impression is - it is chain reaction. He had been going that way, the role of the Joker was perfectly composed for him, but in the consequence pumped up his mental falling down.

Huh, don't make me go there.., i'm a big fan of Batman, in any forms and medias :o
his performance is good, it's the best thing in the movie along with it's score and cinematography, but the hype that you're hearing, well it's a consequence of his death, no doubt about that.
As for the film it's self, i didn't like it.
It may well be the best super hero movie, and that's only cause i can't bother myself to think of the other movies from the same genre, but the best movie ever, the number what 3 or 4 on IMDB's top list
:haha:
a big fat joke.
it ain't even the best Batman movie out there, it for most part doesn't even seem like a Batman movie Batman begins is much more of a Batman movie that this, and Batman 2, although terribly campy and Bartonesc is probably the best one :armed:
so i'll stop myself right here and tell you to watch it, see for yourself all that Ledger had to offer, i personally think it's the best Joker or should i say a much better Joker than the Nicholson's.

EDIT: well i missed TTS's post but totally agree with it, obviously.:D

referring to when an actor is considered a supporting actor, I don't think there's a general rule (like screentime etc.), in Ledger's case...well Batman is the hero, so everybody else was supporting cast although Ledger outperformed Bale easily

the biggest joke in terms of Supporting Actor nomination which I came across is probably Jamie Foxx' nomination for Collateral; everybody who has seen this movie will agree that Foxx was as much main actor as Cruise, probably even more, but Tom was on the cover (for sure due to his higher degree of popularity), so...

I didn't believe Penn would claim it. My choice would have been Rourke slightly ahead of Penn, but well.. as long as Pitt doesn't take it:p I'm happy for Penn as well. Kitty

probably the best evening in Oscar history for Asia, even another trophy for Germany, this time in best short film :)

+
Hugh Jackman was fine I think, better than expected for me
Reese & Marion :inlove:
the tribute to the deceased, one of the highlights as every year, Queen Latifah did quite well
Will Smith was fun as always
the way the actors and actresses were portrayed by five former winners was creative as well

-
all in all it's been too many Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire
I didn't like Frost/Nixon to get zero like at the Globes
one for Wall-E is not enough either, especially as that one was never in doubt, hoped for Peter Gabriel to grab one too

so basically yay to the show, nay to the winners

Too long as usual but some entertaining changes in format. Plus the musical numbers/medlies were not the usual insipid crap. Hugh Jackman was a great choice and he did an excellent job. It seems the presenters were chosen well too-bits seemed much less forced than usual and some were actually funny (Ben Stiller and Natalie Portman come to mind. ) Didn't care too much who won, most seemed to deserve their nominations. Definalty have to see Slumdog now though

Kitty de Sade
02-23-2009, 06:05 AM
Kitty  Rourke didn't receive the Oscar :awww:

Ty Voo. It was a political decision- I knew he wouldn't after the SAG awards were given out.

People similar to Mickey- which is exactly why I like him ;) - threaten and anger people. He is a polarizing figure, and that pisses off the establishment.

I saw both performances; it wasn't a contest. The content in The Wrestler was offensive to the people who made the decision. Case closed. I won't watch another one of these though, they bore me with their predictability.

I didn't believe Penn would claim it. My choice would have been Rourke slightly ahead of Penn, but well.. as long as Pitt doesn't take it:p I'm happy for Penn as well. Kitty

Pitt was too busy drooling over Rourke. I wasn't that :drink: too witness it. Pitt is not an actor per se- he's a personality who was repeatedly cast on a physical look that appealed to people. He doesn't deserve to be nominated in the same category as the other four.

Ty for the  Honey, I appreciate it. Like I told Voo, I knew Rourke had no chance after the SAGs.

So funny- the result didn't affect me, and after I came home tonight, my phone blew up w/ messages. :rolls:

It was good, but it would have been nice to have all of these songs performed completely instead of in medley.

agree.

And I am disappointed Peter Gabriel lost.

No surprising winner tonight. That's a disappointment

And *sigh* I fall more in love with Hugh Jackman

I loved how they gave out the acting awards, having 5 previous winners introduce each nominee.

I watched most of the show last night. It was pretty good. :) I didn't care too much about who won - as long as Brad & Angie didn't win because I don't think they would have deserved it. :p

I loved how they gave out the acting awards, having 5 previous winners introduce each nominee.^ I thought that was the best change in the show - I loved it and I hope they continue it. :) :) :)

I'm not a fan of Hugh Jackman, so no matter what he did I would not have liked it.

I thought they screwed up the "In Memorium" tribute to those who have died in the past year. Instead of just putting the video straight on the TV screen, they panned the camera around and kept showing Queen Latifah and you couldn't read the names of those shown - who the tribute is supposed to be about! (Queen Latifah did a good job singing though.)

The Pineapple Express skit was funny. :haha:

The John Legend / Slumdog Millionaire musical mash-up was just awkward and weird.

I'm glad Heath Ledger won. :crying2:

you can find all winners on the 1st page

here's this year's In-Memoriam-video focusing only on the artists, in contrast to the show (music by Queen Latifah)
