I thought you could only pick those that exist on the tour.

You're right that you can only pick surfaces on the tour, but I think that it qualifies as a type of Hard court, and that the ITF doesn't differentiate between subtypes. At least, I don't know of any tournaments on tour that use Asphalt, but it's clearly allowed. It is a bit of a minor mystery to me as well

Also, it looks like, at least from the DC website, that this is the first ever Zone I or higher tie on the surface, which is an interesting choice.

A real shame that Peter is injured. I didn't even know he was. Fred is really bad and will lose both his matches. But we should still win 3-2.

Fred plays these TBs really poorly, he's actually been not bad for the first 12 games of the last two sets.

Is it better for Fred to lose in 3 and be ready to beat Giovanni or to play 5 sets and then be tired?

To lose in three is better I think, the second and third sets were pretty even, and if he can play this well against Giovanni he will have a solid chance. To waste his energy chasing an unlikely victory, especially with the doubles point so important, wouldn't seem to me to be very smart.

I hope that 5th rubber is Milos v. Campozano, though:devil:

Especially since Fred's play in big moments hasn't been very good in this match :o

Giovanni has the better game than Nicolas in these conditions. Fred won't beat him. Frank will even have a tough match against Giovanni.

i think it all comes down to dancevic vs n lappenti. danc should beat the other lappenti today, canada should win the doubles, and other lappenti will probably beat niemeyer.

Hmm, I did not think Giovanni was that good, Frank beat him pretty easily late last year, and it wasn't like Frank was in very good form then. Plus seeing him at Dallas this year didn't leave much of an impression on me, at least. If your assessment is right, this will be a very tough tie

TMJordan
03-07-2009, 03:37 AM
if canada wins this, who do you think would win the peru vs canada in peru match?

It will be on clay so it will be very tough for us. Polansky must play for Canada to have any chance. We should win the doubles but they are the favorites in the singles. Dancevic really strugles on clay.

Snowwy
03-07-2009, 03:55 AM
Who is Peru's second player. I like Canada's chances if Miranda is Peru's second player. That is assuming Polansky is healthy, he's a good clay courter.

Yeah, we'd definitely need Polansky, without him the question will be whether it's 1-4 or 0-5.

Is Horna injured or retired? He hasn't played any matches yet this year.

If he is not around, and Polansky is, we could definitely have a decent shot at taking two singles matches of Frank-Peter v. Echazu-Miranda (or whoever they use as their third player). If Horna is in and playing with any kind of form, it would take a minor miracle, I think.

TMJordan
03-07-2009, 04:06 AM
It would most likley be Horna/Miranda. But both of them have not been healthy this year so we will have to wait and see. I do think Peter can beat these guys if he is healthy and like I said we have the big advantage in doubles but a lot still remains to be seen.

Peter is better on clay than HC, I don't know how but he is. :p

Snowwy
03-07-2009, 04:16 AM
Frank can beat Miranda on clay too.

But I think we are forgetting that this tie is tied 1-1. :)

Haha, definitely getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Maybe next we should discuss which team losing in WG 1st round we have the best chance to beat in the playoffs :p:)

I'm fairly confident at 1-1, though hopefully Frank will be able to show a little more toughness to close out the tie than he did today's match, definitely had some third set hiccups.

Interesting note from the CP article on the match:
The victory also secured Nicolas Lapentti the Ecuadorian Davis Cup record for most total wins and most singles wins, both of which he was tied for with Andres Guzman. Lapentti now boasts a 55-31 total win record and 37-15 total singles record.

Well done to him :bigclap: Hopefully he will get a couple of chances to add to his record against Uruguay

I dunno, Nestor hasn't played singles in three years, and hasn't completed a DC singles match in six years, and has only ever won one deciding match, and that was in Americas Zone II. I think he could potentially win, but I just don't think that they'll take the risk

I don't think it's a risk, he has a better chance than the half retired Niemeyer. Maybe they think it's a lot of pressure to put on him, playing his first singles match in years and it's the deciding rubber, and he is 37. :p

Still I really hope he gets the shot.
