Battle of the big hitters and huge forehands, we all know about Tsongas capabilities and with Verdasco beating the favorite for the title he will no doubt be sky high as far as confidence goes, this could be a great match. although i pick:
Tsonga in 3 or 4 sets.

I'll go for Verdasco no doubt, the way he is playing atm is amazing.

None the less i'll prefer the 1 who could probz beat Nadal in the semi's assuming Nadal wins.

Both are playing awesome, but I have a feeling that Verdasco in the semis against Nadal would be a bit less competetive than a Rafa-Tsonga rematch.

Im going wiv Verdasco. I have been unimpressed wiv Tsonga as of late. He played magically against Ljubicic but his match against Blake was a bit dull. Doesnt fare well against a pomped up beau boi Nando

First of all I'm not convinced that Nadal is going to beat Simon :) Simon isn't chanceless before this match up. But I agree with the opinion that Tsonga would be a tougher opponent for Nadal than Nando...

Another tricky match, Tsonga has better chance to win in night session, Nando in day session. I hope the match will be entertaining and the winner of it takes the title :yeah:

Typically after a huge upset comes a defeat, I say Tsonga in 4.

I think Jo and hope so that he can own Rafa again the way he did last year. Rafa is praying Nando wins.

nando won't get the chance to play the game he likes. tsonga is looking to be the aggressor all the time and that doesn't suit verdasco. he won't have the same amount of time to dictate points with his forehand as he did against murray. tsonga in 3 or 4

Tsonga in 3. Should be an entertaining match.

Interesting the night and day stuff, what's the reasoning behind that?

Generally two things.

1) Playing at day, especially in difficult conditions, what is so charachteristic in Melbourne, requires better physical preparation, I think it isn't accidental that the most retirements in Grand Slam tournaments is connected with Australian Open. Tsonga is a heavy person, so playing in difficult conditions isn't a favorable thing for him, last year en route to the final he played the best matches in night session (Youzhny, Nadal), he was also on fire against Blake last night, played considerably much more better match than against Ljubo and Sela, against Sela he had even the weakening in the third set. We still don't know how Tsonga is prepared to play more than 3 hour match, he hasn't played a 5-setter by now!

2) Playing at night prefers big-servers, it's easier to serve aces and service winners at night, it's the cooler weather, so it's beneficial for Tsonga's huge serve

Furthermore some people tend to favour the night, the other ones the day. I think Tsonga is a night animal, that's his zone where he can be unbeatable.

Verdasco in 4. Tsonga is no opponent for Nando now

Tsonga in 4. 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6. This should be a pretty good match. I wouldn't look too much into the Tsonga we saw vs Blake I expected that match to look rather ugly to the eye in the end.

Tsonga in 4.
He will need to up his level because Verdasco is in a great form but i have no doubt he will as he always does in the later stages of the big tournaments.

No doubt Verdasco is playing great tennis, but I just can't see him taking out Tsonga. Tsonga over powers him if four tight sets. Murray was a very good match up for Verdasco, but Tsonga is not.

NO.:wavey:

the surface is faster during the day, which makes serves and attacking shots penetrate the court. The surface at night is slower and nando's spin will be tougher to negotiate for tsonga.

tsonga may be a night animal but generally day matches favor attacking players because they don't have to run as much as grinders in the heat and because the surface is faster.

Tsonga in 3 or 4, I think the Murray style fitted Verdasco much better (he's 0-2 against Blake and 2-8 against Roddick, no win since 2005 while he's 2-1 against Simon for example)

I was referring my post not to the speed of court depending on day/night but to the fact that conditions in Melbourne at day are very different than at night (heat, intensive sun, sometimes strong wind) what can affect the way of serving. Comparising last two Tsonga matches in Melbourne, there is a little indicator he has been serving better at night:

Tsonga vs. Sela:
16 service games; 1st Serve % - 62; Fastest Serve Speed - 220 KMH; Average 1st Serve Speed - 190 KMH; Average 2nd Serve Speed - 150 KMH; Aces - 5 (0.31 per game); was forced to save BP's in 6 games

Tsonga vs. Blake:
17 service games; 1st Serve % - 64; Fastest Serve Speed - 220 KMH; Average 1st Serve Speed - 195 KMH; Average 2nd Serve Speed - 150 KMH; Aces - 12 (0.70 per game); was forced to save BP's in 2 games

Oviously following these two matches is tough to conclude but because the Tsonga-Verdasco match will be playing at day, I vote for the Spaniard.

If Verdasco serves good, i'll say Verdasco. If he don't i'll probz go with Tsonga.

Kinda want both to win, as i like Verdasco and assuming Nadal wins i would like Tsonga to vs him.

Guy Haines
01-27-2009, 09:47 PM
Verdasco can handle hot day conditions better than Tsonga. But if the court is closed because it's too hot outside, Tsonga gains a definite upper hand. That makes things tough to call.

Also nighttime conditions are closer than standard daytime conditions to indoors, where Tsonga excelled last year. And when did Tsonga really turn it up a notch last year at the Australian? Oh yeah, at night.

Was his '08 quarterfinal in the day or at night?

I like both of these guys. May the best one today win. But anyone who thinks Tsonga can do another KO on Nadal in the semi is sadly mistaken.
