after Gasquet lost that tie-break, it was NEVER in doubt, brilliant play from Gonzalez in the last 3 sets especially 5th :worship: Richard seemed to struggle physically toward the end.

what a great match though, even from Gasquet, the way he saved the first match point at 10-11 with a whipping forehand winner and screaming like a lion, his heart was all in it :worship:

Gasquet stats:
1st serve %: 64%
Aces: 11
W/UE: 80/58
break pts won: 6/14
net points won: 76/99
total points won: 191

Gonzalez stats:
1st serve %: 69%
Aces: 14
W/UE: 85/51
break pts won: 6/14
net points won: 33/49
total points won: 191

Great effort from Gonzo, surprising amount of fight from Gasquet but an expected loss once it got tight.

Disgusting result. Gasquet was so much more deserving this last set. He won more points, had to serve with pressure all the time. Disgusting

It wasn't like Gasquet played badly though, he just ran into Gonzalez who is the streakiest of players jesus. Richard's movement definitely was influenced by the toe injury though, but no excuses. Good match. Too bad I had Gasquet +800 3-2 sets. GRRRRRRRRR!

Johnny Groove

What a spectacular match.

Gasquet was great in the first two sets, Gonzalez came back in the third, that tiebreak was :worship:

4th set, Gasquet took some injury timeouts for his toe, Gonzalez took it 6-2 with a haze of winners, then the Chilean took a timeout in the 5th.

The entire 5th was both men trying to smack winners and expose the other's injury. Both men fought all the way to the end, especially Gasquet, something I was happy to see.

Gasquet: 80 winners, 58 errors
Gonzalez: 85 winnners, 51 errors

Great match. The longer it went on though, the more obvious it became that Gasquet would be the one falter IMO. And now I'm just referring to the physical side.

Gonzo hit his topsping backhand pretty ok mostly today IMO. He sliced much less than normal.

Hell of a fight from Gasquet in the fifth. He looked down and out at the end of the 4th and had treatment on his toe and shoulder. Gonzo was just too good on the biggest points.

Richie should've done better when he had mp in the 4th set breaker. 2nd serve bh...dumped into the net

richie21

At least,Gasquet has improved his miserable record on 5 sets match.....or not.
More seriously,he played well......but he seriously needs to work on his return of serve on 2nd serves.

Wow, I switched this match off when I saw Gasquet go two sets up, thought he had it in the bag. He was destroying Gonzalez with the backhand, and now this has happened.

Excellent match :worship:

What an animal this Gonzalez :D Gasquet was playing prettier tennis in the 5th set, unfortunately his opponent is a mental giant. Gasquet is too vulnerable to be a competitive player in Grand Slams.
In the last 20 years only one match was won after winning such a long tie-break being 0-2 down.

Man...Gasquet has such an amazing talent, If he would have wanted he would have finished Gonzo in 3 sets. But as we say in S.America, he is a 'pecho frio'.

Good job from Gonzo in keeping a fierce rhythm all the way.

Bad news is both Gasquet or Gonzo would have been easy targets for Nadal even if they were fit...but after this marathon I see no chance for Gonzo.

great match , you can see how Gasquet is a nigthware match up for Gonzalez, mainly for his dth bh but also for his variety and suprising goings to the net. But his level went down a little later on and had some blisters, plus Gonzalez kept playing on fire but in the fifth the french recovered his level and was being the best player but Gonzalez was on fire too and saved his bps mainly for his shots.
I feel bad for Gasquet, first his painful loss to murray in Wimbledon not this.

There was some assclown behaviour from Gonzalez towards the umpire in the fifth set. I think he even stole Schuettler's gesture from last Wimbledon, when he asked the umpire if the ball was really good, before he celebrated the point.

It was nice to see Richie come out set on attack mode from the start. Pity he fell asleep at the start of the third and then started to struggle with his physique. Funny how he gave the finger to the crowd since they couldn't keep their mouths shut whenever his first serve wouldn't go in.

Great fight from Gonzo too, even though he'll be pummeled up next.

99 net approaches for Gasquet, winning 76 of the points.

He probably could've used it a bit more and inexlicably serve/volleyed to Gonzo's fh on a few important points. In fairness Gonzo ripped some insane bh passes at times so he did have to keep things varied.

Amazing match. One of the best I have seen, both in terms of quality and excitement.

What a fighter this Gasquet is :yeah:

Gasquet played incredible tennis for the first 3 sets and was unlucky to lose in a tight 3rd set tiebreak. After he lost the 3rd set I thought he would lose the next two sets easily, especially since he was struggling with a toe injury and had some shoulder pain too. He really surprised me with his warrior effort in the 5th set. In the end Gonzalez was just too good, he played a blinder of a game in the last game and deserved the victory. Gasquet did not choke at all in the 5th set, Gonzalez actually went out there and took the match from him.

Both should be commended on their effort and I hope Gasquet's fighting spirit continues in future matches. If he plays like he did in the first 3 sets, as well as fights hard like he did in the 5th set all year, he could be contending for Slams.

Gasquet should not be called a choker after this match. He was behind for most of the 3rd set, but fought back hard, and on his match point in the TB he was aggressive but his backhand just caught the tape. Gonzalez made some great shots to win the TB, it was not choking by Richard at all.

The 5th set also can't possibly be called choking, Richard fought amazingly and couldn't really do much about the winners from Gonzalez in the last game, including BH DTL on match point, lob winner, and forehand winner.

Q. After the fourth set, were you surprised to see Richard able to fight so much?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I was surprised because the way that he starts to playing, serve and volley. I couldn't pass him. I mean, he was cover the net really well. He's really fast. I mean, I know Richard. I watch. I like his game. But I think we practice maybe one or two times in my life. So we never played too much each other. He's really fast and he have really good hand, you know.

In the beginning, I couldn't do anything. That backhand is the best.

Gasquet lol, I just hope he won't suffer the similar fate as Sebastien Grosjean for the rest of his career. Winning 2 sets to love with absolute dominating form then would go down losing the match somehow, that's just typical stuff. The only way to describe his offensive tennis is "swift", and he did just that at the start. When you watch this guy live he is just incredible. His game starts off slowly, it always feels the opponent is better, then he jumps to second gear, then third, then fourth, then fifth and amazingly, there's sixth for this guy. His level of tennis in a match when he's on jumps HEAPS and I've never seen anyone who can raise his game like that. If he can just maintain his level and somehow improve that forehand (virtually impossible though) he can easily challenge the top 4.

Gasquet lol, I just hope he won't suffer the similar fate as Sebastien Grosjean for the rest of his career.

At this rate,i would be already very happy if he had the same career as Grosjean!
I mean,Grosjean at least won a big title and made multiple GS 1/2 finals.

Could only see the last few games (Eurosport coverage) but that was good enough for me tbh...it is a pity that matches like these still have to feature a loser.

Very well done to both of them...to Gonzo for the incredible fightback, and to Gasquet for showing some backbone in a 5th set that many probably thought would run away from him. Obviously a really painful loss for him (to follow on, in particular, from Wimbledon 2008), but I think he has made good progress in the last few months...I remember how pathetic he looked at the US Open, last fall.

Good luck to Gonzo in the QF...he will need it! :tape:

Fantastic match, too bad Gasquet couldn't finish it off, enough chances.

Where are those haters now, who think Gasquet has a terrible forehand?

are you seriously calling out the haters after Gasquet lost this match from 2-0 sets?

i always thought you proof your haters and doubters wrong when you actually win, but what do i know

Gonzalez was a bit lucky to win this match and for all it's worth, he's nowhere near the form he was at two years ago and will go down to Nadal in 3 sets.

I slept through the beginning of the match (on purpose) and as soon as I got up, Richie loses the 4th set and the match. :o So yes, I blame the loss on me. I will have to download the first 2 sets so that I can see what everybody else, but from what I read, I'm sure to be amazed. :worship: Richard will get there somehow. He has improved imo especially with his on-court emotions. He used to be so timid but there was this one celebration that looked Stepanek like. :haha:

Congrats Gonzo and the Fenatics. Good luck against Rafa... for your sake, you better hope he isn't winner happy like he was against Haas. :spit:

comiserate with all Gasquet fans after that torture

No, you're not. ;) Because I know how I'd feel if this was Murray. :p

Fernando got lucky he was serving first in the 5th set. His forehand saved the match for him with that wimpy slice backhand of his, unless he is hitting the backhand defesively. Fernando really is a jerk though. He fought very hard though and made Richard win the points more than once. And he saved my tennis win streak streak:worship:!!

Is anyone sure that this wasn't a reply of Richard's heartbreaking loss at Wimbledon. Same epic 3rd set tie-break. And his opponent even had a roucous crowd. And his opponent was a jerk too!!

Gasquet may never win a GS or even a MS but he is damn fun to watch when he plays like last night.

Congrats to Gonzo for fighting back and KUDOS to Richie for not giving up the entire match. And thanks to both for being great sports while puttting on a hard fought amazing show!

That was a terrific five setter, congrats to Gonzo for the win. :bigclap: I thought Gasquet played very well but he lacks a killer instinct. He's not one of my favorite players but I feel badly for his fans, these losses are tough.

Can the AO crowds get more out of control and the security more lame? Ethnic rumbles, streakers dancing around for several minutes before anybody notices, now fireworks in the stands? Yes, let's burn the court down and cause somebody to go blind. What a joke.

Great match, love the shotmaking. I feel badly for Richard too, he should have won this much earlier. At least he went for it on match point and I respect that. He also fought like hell, so nothing really to be ashamed of. He's got to work on his fitness but that's nothing new. Hope he comes back strong.

Gonzo, great fight. Hope he has something left for Nadal.

no biggie as OP drams it up, but something is definitely wrong with Gasquets 'ead.

I still think that all the hype he was surrounded way back fundamentally got to him, and he hasn't recovered. too many chokes.

Amazing atmosphere, marvelous match :worship:

While I like both players, I was rooting for Gasquet and was pleased to se him play so well in those first two sets. However, by the third, I could barely keep my eyes open and drifted off to sleep after he was broken early on so I'm actually impressed to see the Frenchie got it to a TB as his form had definitely dipped by the time I stopped watching...

Woke up again right at the end when Gonzo had his first MP and, through my sleepy haze, was surprised and apprehensive to realize it was deep into a fifth set. Knew that the end was near and, sure enough, the Chilean sealed it a couple of points later. Got to watch most of the last set properly on TV just now and am heartened to see both players gave it their all and showed such heart

As for the crowd, personally that's what I love to see; passionate and enthusiastic but not abusive or disruptive  Seriously though, where were all the French fans - did most of them go home after Simon and Tsonga played? The small contingent that showed up did their best but the Chileans far outnumbered them and, I believe, played a large part in their man's comeback.

Fucking awesome match to watch, just awesome. I loved every second I saw of it and I give big props to both men for putting on such great performances. It's a match I would have paid big money to watch live as the atmosphere was epic and the shots just kept getting bigger and bigger. I felt bad for Richard as I just couldn't see him winning after he lost the tiebreaker but goddamnit did he fight right to the end. His shotmaking was brilliant, he was unlucky to hit that match point down the line into the net and from there it all changed. Gonzo was fearless with his forehand and kept cranking it up time and time again, ruthlessly running Gasquet side to side who in the end finally started pumping himself up with his little dances that made me chuckle. I can only hope that there are more matches like this one at this year's AO, please let it be. :)

I didn't post yesterday as I was just too fed up. Richard, a great match from you and I hope you can show this fighting spirit in the rest of your career and learn how to pull that fifth set out of the bag. I think towards the end, the match was so close that either one of them could have won. Lady luck had a part to play in it I think.
Great match from both players and congrats to Gonzo and his fans.
It's such a bummer when your favourite is out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fun atmosphere and quality match from both, there was no chair throwing in this one fortunately.

A few of the Chilean fans were a bit naughty, heckling Gasquet as he was about to serve, with the "miss, miss" in between serves along with a few other things, but the crowd were great for the most part.

Chileno
01-25-2009, 01:03 PM
Yeah...but it's not as if the heckling was anything major, it was only a couple of them and they were quickly 'shushed' by the other Chilean fans. I don't mind singing, jumping and shouting as long as they shut up when the point starts... ;)

He should have, I agree, but I'm also convinced he'll come out stronger from this one. I really believe so and I'm sure he will too.
It hurts to lose like that, but he did put up a good fight and showed a lot of character. It would be STUPID to deny it!
