Who is the most charismatic player of the open era

Henry Kaspar

Obviously there are far more than 10 plausible choices that could be nominated. Please specify if you think someone other than these 10 is the most charismatic. Only retired players. Some I considered but didn't have space to include: Guillermo Vilas, Stefan Edberg, Pat Cash, Miloslav Mecir, Yannick Noah, Goran Ivanisevic, Lletyon Hewitt.

Kuerten will win this poll but I choose Mc Enroe :rocker:

Only Rafter and Kuerten are what I would consider charismatic.

I would consider McEnroe as polemic, not as charismatic :p

Guga and Agassi :D
 @ Borg

I remember seeing Borg as a kid, and I can give you in writing that the guy had tons of charisma. In spite of or even because his iceberg personality. Borg had this intimidating aura of invincibility; the type who would stare everybody down, no matter how hard the other guy tried, never cracked or showed any weakness. And he had the looks.

McEnroe vs. Borg was like fire vs. ice.

As much as I like Guga, for me he is nowhere near McEnroe, Agassi, Becker, Borg.

Marat Safin deserves to be on the list. He can be surly or dark or crazy or he can just sit blankly in a chair--no matter what, people seem to be captivated by him. Personally, I tried very hard over the years not to like him, but in the end I can't help myself. That's charisma.

He' still active, there is another poll for that.

The very aspect of charisma is tenuous and hard to define so it's no surprise to find polar opposites in thought on the very same person. However, typically, there are two distinct parts, how one carries theirselves, their aura, if you will, and their speaking ability. Borg clearly had the former, but did not really have the latter, and failed as a commentator because of it.

Agassi's got no charisma at all.
Borg is the all time greatest when it comes to charisma.

Nice results. I'm surprised that Kuerten is ahead of McEnroe, Borg, Becker, Agassi, perhaps that is because memories of him are recent.

McEnroe. His temper is still discussed to this day. He is by far the most memorable.

I put my vote in for Agassi. Didn't like the guy as a player, but he had a lot of charisma, which changed shades throughout his career.

This a i dictionary of charisma:

Merriam-Wester online

: a special magnetic charm or appeal

Safin, Kuertin

A lot of the names mentioned here may be fun to watch, but don't have that elusive magnetism about them which constitutes Charisma

I disagree. The mature Agassi, for example, owned the audience whenever he played. Just see the endless ovations at his retirement.

As for Boris Becker, I remember well a Davis Cup match in the early 90s in Rio de Janeiro against Brazil. The audience went wild at every point Becker's Brazilian opponent won (forget who that was). Becker let the spectators celebrate for 10, 20 seconds, then put the index finger on his lips. The noise died down immediately, the stadium went all silent. You could have heard a needle fall to the floor. Then Becker served.

This is charisma.

The first six of those are way before my time so don't mean much to me personally.
Kuerten I never would have considered charismatic at all, and I kinda took a dislike to the guy, probably because he was one of those who didn't bother playing at Wimbledon most of the time.
I'd go with Agassi or Federer as the most charismatic player, leaning towards Agassi.
