solid first two sets from Federer (painting the lines on many occasions ) and erratic from Safin with too many UE, in the third set Safin was much better but too little too late, Safin foot faulted in the tiebreak :o

well done Roger  Berdych next.

Federer stats:
1st serve%: 60%
W/UE: 26/28
break pts won: 3/4

Safin stats:
1st serve%: 51%
W/UE: 33/33
breka pts won: 0/0

This is the third time I've seen Safin with a foot fault for crossing the imaginary middle line and all of them on crucial points. At least this time the middle line judge called it, first two times it was a baseline judge.

Great play from Feds. It's a shame Safin had to play Federer so early, as he looked to be playing well this tournament.

Safin and Federer often brought out the best in each other. It's too bad there won't be many more of these matches.

Great effort from Federer, kept the intensity high up until the stumble in the final tiebreak but got over the line with that amazing passing shot.

Nothing Safin could do really. Perhaps could have served better but Federer's supreme anticipation make his big first serves look average unless he hits the line every time.

Congrats Roger. Deserved the win played well i hope he goes on and wins the Title he is the GOAT in my eyes.
Well Safin has been my favorite player since Roland Garros 1998 when he made that brilliant run as a qualifier(downing Agassi and Kuerten). He has brought me many wonderful memories and $hit loads of heart break too. I wish him luck for the rest of the season, he is passed his best, i wanted him to play out his final year on a high especially at the Aus Open, however now i just hope he wins the St.Petersburg Open. Mainly because i am sick of watching Murray win it time and time again

Safin hit more winners just like Korolev
I wasn't disappointed from his display 33 winners 33 unforced errors(28 UF errors from Fed)...Federer served very smartly thats all i can say and tactically he played the match right.

Good Luck Roger!
Good Luck Safin!

The truth is that Marat could not do much better in this match, the only remark is that he was risking too much going for the lines all the time and he wasn't patient enough at some rallies trying to go for immidiate winners instead of staying a bit longer in a rally for a better chance.

I think Marat could've definitely done better, his serves in the first two sets were very disappointing (43% and 50% first serve in, and pretty low win % on the first serve).

Wrong. Most amazing stat is Roger has more unforced errors then winners, while Marat was 50/50.

I think the Winners/UE ratio is misleading in this match, quality was definitely better than that stat suggests. I thought they were hitting winners all over the place but often they got a racket on the ball but just couldn't handle it because of the depth and pace.

Very good from Roger for the first 2 sets. Movement and forehand was close to his best IMO in those sets. Should be confindent for the upcoming match(es).

Expected and I called it on the Australian Open's website where that one guy who posted a article claiming that Safin would seriously defeat Federer in 5 sets... I mean that is a huge joke. When Safin was in form, there was still a huge gap between Roger and him. I mean I like Safin don't get me wrong, but he definately isn't going to be able to do anything right now when he is totally out of shape and not hitting like he used to.

From the Herald Sun today

Do not disturb

Russian ace Marat Safin has been making plenty of new female friends during what is shaping as his last visit to the Australian Open.
Retired Aussie great Mark Woodforde let slip at the Optus Legends cocktail party that it has been an interesting experience having a hotel room next to Safin's during this year's Open.
He told the room that Safin "was working hard both on and off the court".
He revealed each night when he returned to his room he would try to be quiet because, judging by the noises emanating from Safin's suite, the big Russian did not want to be disturbed.
