Joo "Feijo" Souza

01-22-2009, 04:24 PM
I think it's past time Joo gets his thread, his consistent challenger successes are making him a real prospect for Brazilian tennis. Huge serve and a good baseline game can make him grow a lot at the ATP tour.

For those wondering, Feijo means "Bean" :)

01-22-2009, 04:29 PM
Feijão had just passed through Cuevas at the second round of Iquique challenger when I created the thread. He will face the winner of Amado and Hormazabal to try another semi-final. Hopefully he reaches his first challenger final this week or even a maiden title. :yeah:

01-23-2009, 08:05 PM
João lost to Hormazabal in two close sets :(

01-28-2009, 11:56 PM
First round at Bucaramanga, Feijão had his revenge against Hormazabal, 6-4 6-4 win. :yeah:

01-29-2009, 02:09 AM
Feijao :yeah:

I could swear he already had a thread.

01-29-2009, 04:28 PM
He's currently my favourite Brazilian player, I quite like his style. :yeah:

I expect him to finish the year close to the top 100, he really has the talent to do so.

01-29-2009, 04:39 PM
I think Joo is ready to shine in this season :yeah:

01-29-2009, 04:47 PM
6-4 6-4 over Juan Sebastian Cabal and he is on the quarter-finals again.

7-2 on this season, not bad :yeah:

EDIT: 6-2 actually, it was a WO against Daniel in São Paulo.

01-29-2009, 05:06 PM

01-30-2009, 10:08 PM
Thoufh loss for Jão against Zeballos in 2 tiebreaks.

Let's wait for Viña qualy draw to see if he got in :yeah:

Anyone knows what his schedule is for the next couple of weeks? I can't see him playing challengers till week 8. Will he try to qualify for the SA clay tourneys?

Anyone knows what his schedule is for the next couple of weeks? I can't see him playing challengers till week 8. Will he try to qualify for the SA clay tourneys?

Most likely he will get the last WC for Costa do Sauipe, and he's on the qualifying entry list for Acapulco. Don't know if he will go to Buenos Aires.

04-06-2009, 01:58 AM
Vamos Feijão at San Luis Potosi :clap2:

04-06-2009, 02:21 AM
Good luck Feijo

2 round vs zeballin :boxing:

04-06-2009, 05:14 AM
Good luck Feijo

2 round vs zeballin :boxing:

Most likely the third.
He should play more hard court events, he did well at So Paulo.

04-27-2009, 12:45 AM
Jão plays at Pereira this week as a seed.

04-27-2009, 02:48 AM
Good luck feijao :yeah:

04-29-2009, 12:17 AM
Jo defeated Sat Galan in two close tiebreaks :)

04-29-2009, 11:56 PM
Another extremely though match for him, but in the end Feijão defeated Stephen Bass 5-7 7-6(10) 7-5.

He probably saved a few set points in this match :yeah:

Joven Giova is next, now it's a very good test for him.

05-01-2009, 08:03 PM
Huge win for Feijo over Joven Giova and he is on the semis :)

It was the easiest win this week so far, 6-2 6-4.

05-02-2009, 07:21 PM
Jo lost to Falla in 2 sets, it wasn't this time that he reached his first final.

It was a good week for him anyway, he wasn't having good results after the first weeks of the year.

05-18-2009, 08:07 PM
Roland Garros

Marcos Daniel BRA [3] vs. Prakash Amritraj IND
Ivan Dodig CRO vs. Caio Zampieri BRA
Ryler DeHeart USA vs. Alex Bogdanovic GBR
João Souza BRA vs. Somdev Devvarman IND [26]

Forget about the bad form Jão, anything can happen.

06-18-2009, 01:08 PM
This really wasn't the first semester I was waiting for Feijo.

I hope he'll get a better form through the South America challenger tournaments that will start in july.

He's a lot of work to do to improve his game. It's easy to notice problems with the way he moves around the court, as well as his consistence in he baseline. But he seems to have good focus on training and has a very good coach beside him.

I still see a good future for him. He just completed 21 years old in the end of may, and has great shots.

06-24-2009, 09:48 PM
Jão won his first round match at Constanta, hopefully he will have a good run here to get back some confidence.

06-25-2009, 10:52 PM
Another win for him, back on a quarterfinal :)

Pospisil (the Czech one) is next, good chance to reach the semis.

Raa Feijo.

06-26-2009, 08:54 PM

He defeated Pospisil in straight sets and will face the in-form Blaz Kavcic for a place in the final.

How great it would be if Jo wins his first title this week...

06-27-2009, 05:51 PM
It was a tight score but Feijo couldn't beat Kavcic in the end, 6-4 7-6(4) for the Slovenian.

Still a great week for him and this should be good for his confidence :yeah:

06-29-2009, 01:46 PM
Feijo lost to Del Bonis in Braunschweig qualies (2nd round), 7-6(8) 6-1.

07-06-2009, 08:20 PM
Huge win for him against Sidorenko at Oberstaufen, 7-5 6-1.

07-10-2009, 02:25 PM
2R - def. Alcaide 2-2 ret.
QF - def. Zimmerman 6-3 6-3

Feijo winning many matches again and that's awesome.

He now faces Robin Vik for a place in his first final. Though match and Vik is the favourite, but I believe Joo can win and hopefully he does too.

Vamos Jo.

Ad Wim
07-11-2009, 09:11 AM
Nice that he is finally getting some results in. I was worried he wouldn't make it...

07-11-2009, 02:19 PM
He couldn't do much against Vik, 6-2 6-2 for the Czech.

Unfortunatelly he loses again in a semifinal, now it's 0-7 for him at this stage in challengers. This year it's 0-4 with semis lost at So Paulo (lost to Capdeville), Pereira (lost to Falla), Constanta (lost to Kavcic) and now Oberstaufen (lost to Vik).

He will make it one day anyway, he won't stop foghting and that's for sure.

07-11-2009, 02:21 PM
He is losing to pumped players. Capdeville was playing ok in sao paulo, Falla must have been playing with all strenghts at home, Kavcic in a hot strea and now Vik who can have a good ranking. He will get to the final once he faces a surprise player.

07-11-2009, 10:50 PM
Another time in the semis...

But his results increased again! The points he won in Constanta and Oberstaufen will be great for his ranking. He will stay close to top 200, and has three challengers in a row in Brazil to make good tournaments. Good job, Feijo!

08-14-2009, 02:18 AM
Jão had no success in BH and Campos do Jordão, but this week at the capital of the country he had great wins over Demoliner (6-3 6-4) and over Zampieri (5-7 7-6 7-6).

He plays Mello tomorrow for a place in the semifinal and hopefully he won't feel tired after this night battle.

Just come on Jão, come on.

09-13-2009, 10:32 PM
Good luck to Feijo at Cali where he starts the series of South American tournaments.

Make the best of it Jo.

Ad Wim
09-14-2009, 10:56 PM
Yeah, let's get some results Jaoa! DO you guys believe he can still make it? He's not really pushing through...

09-15-2009, 02:05 AM
Sure I believe :)

He didn't have many hard court wins but that isn't his best surface anyway, also he played a though opponent on USO qualies (Chiudinelli reached the 3rd round at the main draw).

Now we are back to clay, and this is South America where he has his best results, so it's the best time of the year to achieve good results.

Ad Wim
09-15-2009, 07:26 PM
Not a great start, horrible actually. This Struvay is 18 and 800 in the world. Souza will never climb the rankings if he keeps losing matches like these, and he does a lot. Terrible...

09-15-2009, 09:31 PM
Well I've never seen Struvay playing, maybe he got a good game and today was his day.

Time to move on now, the wins will come.

10-01-2009, 02:51 AM
Jo had a win on Brazilian Interclubs last weekend and I thought he was playing pretty well.

This week he took a set off of Santi Ventura in the Vilas Club but couldn't clinch the win. There will be plenty of tournament in South America till the end of the year though and he will have his chances to achieve some wins, reach his first challenger final and who knows win one title.

Ad Wim
10-01-2009, 09:55 AM
Still, he has to get some results in! Taking a set against Ventura is pretty good actually, and just a tough loss, but that loss against Struvay was terrible and really unnecessary. Vamos Joao!

10-05-2009, 02:14 AM
Massu is Feijo's next test, in Montevideo.

I believe he can win, let's see how it goes.

10-06-2009, 01:18 AM
Jo got so close, but lost in the 3rd set tiebreak in the end.

Losses like this one must hurt, but his time will come and the cheering won't stop.

Ad Wim
10-08-2009, 08:47 AM
True, but he needs one of those wins some time. And it isn't that Massu is winning a lot lately. so...

But Souza's ranking is still good enough to enter all of the challenger in South-Amarica till the end of the year. But if he doesn't do something, it won't be for next year. Come on man, do some damage again!

10-13-2009, 10:23 AM
Jo lost to Bogomolov in Asuncion, time to regroup and have a good result in the last weeks of the year.

Maybe in So Paulo :)

Ad Wim
10-13-2009, 09:25 PM
I told you man, this is going downhill...

10-17-2009, 09:32 PM
Santiago, Chile time.

Jo faces Dani Muoz de la Nava.

Make it happen man.

10-25-2009, 12:37 AM
Lost in the first round of Santiago, now comes So Paulo.

He got Bellucci in the first round :scared:

Vamos Jo, vamos man.

Ad Wim
10-25-2009, 12:49 PM

Ad Wim
11-04-2009, 05:47 PM
FOllows it up with another strong win against Decoud. 6-4 6-4, very impressive serving. Keep it up Joao! Plays Salamanca or Begemann next.

11-04-2009, 08:44 PM
Vamos Jo, that's the spirit, never lose the faith.

Keep fighting!

11-06-2009, 11:23 PM
Vamos! Jo defeated an in-form Salamanca (in Colombia where he always peaks) and is back in a semi-final.

Pere Riba now, hopefully the first final.

11-07-2009, 04:30 PM
Jo defeated Riba and that means his very first challenger final.

So glad for him.

Ad Wim
11-08-2009, 10:21 AM
Yeeeeaaaah Caio, our man made it, finally! Very tough match today, but you'll never know, he is on a roll here!

He really needed the points, because he had a lot to defend these weeks. Therefore he won't climb the rankings, probably even fall

11-08-2009, 12:03 PM
The ranking is the less important thing right now IMO, it's all about reaching the final after so many time trying. If he falls, he will climb it again :)

11-08-2009, 09:14 PM
He lost the final against Chela in 3 sets, it's great to see him giving a hard time to better players and reaching his first final.

Next up is Guayaquil and he will face the home legend Nico Lapentti. A loss is the most expected result but the match is played in the court and no matter the result this week in Medellin showed what Joo is capable of.

Ad Wim
11-09-2009, 10:01 AM
He gained 18 places this week but he will probably drop out of the top 200 because he has 72 points to defend these weeks. Still it's good that he finally achieved something again, after a terrible run. Good luck for the last weeks.

11-09-2009, 01:14 PM
Very glad for Feijo too.

He is still inconsistent, but the way he plays in some tournaments shows where he can get in his career.

The match against Nico is really hard, but next week he may be one of the seeds in Lima, because of the rank of this week.

Only one or two wins and he will stay in top 200 at the end os this year. I really believe he'll make it!

01-05-2010, 09:37 PM
He beat Daniel, who is the number 1 seed in Sao Paolo, 6-4 6-4. Sure it is not Marcos' best surface, but it is still a very good win and a nice way to start the year :)

Ad Wim
01-06-2010, 11:38 AM

01-15-2010, 01:08 AM
In So Paulo he lost to Mello in two tiebreaks.

Today he had a MP against Massu but couldn't clinch it in his favour. Too bad, time to move on to the next tournament.

Two QF to start the year, could have been better for the circumstances but could have been worse as well. Vamos Jo.

Ad Wim
01-15-2010, 10:28 AM
He was so much better in the first two sets, had 0-40 twice in the first games of the second. Was a break up in the second, no problems on his serve till then but then gave it away. Was also 3x a mb up in the TB, and had mp, but lost it and then you just knew it was over. Too bad, he needs a final or a win to really break through, this could have been the one. Hope it will turn for him on clay.

01-31-2010, 07:03 PM
After losing to Giraldo in the 2nd round at Bucaramanga, Joo won two matches this weekend (Junqueira and Cipolla) and plays the final round of Santiago qualies against the still alive Adrian Garcia.

Good chance for him to play a tour level main draw for the first time, would be great for his confidence.

He also has a WC guaranteed to play in Bahia next week.

02-01-2010, 08:40 PM
That's great, so happy for him. He was deserving something like that after some though losses.

He plays Greul, make the best of it Jo.

02-02-2010, 12:13 PM
Really happy fo him too. He deserved that. Considering the wild card he won to Brasil Open, the guy will play two ATP Tour tounaments in a row.

Despite the unlucky position in the main draw (he could even meet another qualifier), I think it's possible for him to advance. Simon Greul a seeded, but one of the weakest in this draw.

Let's see how Jo will face that.

02-02-2010, 02:17 PM
50/50 match for souza against greul if he serves well

Ad Wim
02-02-2010, 05:27 PM
I want him to win, but think he is 30-70 against Greul. Don't forget how he was struggling yesterday, against Garcia. Greul is a quality clay player.

02-02-2010, 07:48 PM
looks like youre right ad wim
cant win points on the greul serve

02-02-2010, 09:07 PM
feijao 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) :worship:

great comeback, started to win points on return in the middle of the 2nd set.
led *4-2 40-30 & Ad-40, got broken, wasted 2 bps at 4-3, broken to 0 at 5-5, came back to reach the tiebreak(greul helped him with 2 dfs at 6-5)
in control then,
led 5-1 & 6-3 before eventually converting his 3rd mp

02-02-2010, 10:10 PM
Jo! :worship:

Great things happening this week for him, hope it won't end soon.

Welcome marquez, I know you're one of the persons who have some faith in him :)

02-02-2010, 11:23 PM
C'mon Feijo!

I said before he could win this match. So happy for him!

Let's see how he behaves against Pere Riba. If his body conditions are OK, I think que could get to the quarterfinals.

I'm sure Caio is happy as I am, by the way he believed Feijo even when he loses.

Up to the quarterfinals, Souza!

Ad Wim
02-03-2010, 08:45 AM
Riba is a winnable opponent, more than Greul imo. I think this match is 50-50, come on Joao!

02-03-2010, 12:08 PM
a lot will depend on how he handles the situation mentally
first win on atp tour in a rollercoaster match

he can beat riba for sure, but I'm not too convinced he will

Ad Wim
02-03-2010, 03:42 PM
Riba isn't too experienced either. Played only 7 ATP-matches in his career and is young. Hope Joao isn't tired and serves well, then he has a good chance.

02-03-2010, 06:53 PM
Souza will serve for the second time for the first set. He leads 5*/3. Don't miss it, Feijo!

02-03-2010, 06:59 PM
First set is ours: 6/4. Great job, Feijo! Don't miss the focus. Up to the quarterfinals!

02-03-2010, 07:09 PM

02-03-2010, 07:49 PM
YEAH! 6/4 6/4. Feijo is quarterfinalist of Santiago Open coming from the qualyfing draw! It's a glorious night for the brazilian and his fans.

His next opponent will be the winner of Alberto Martin x Ricardo Mello. Either way, he'll face an experienced opponent, but not a stong player at this stage.

Considering the quarters he'll be a top 180 player in monday list.

Great job! Really happy for him

02-03-2010, 09:13 PM

Keep it up my man.

fantastic result
breakthrough tournament

so funny that I've been talking with ad wim about joao's chances to reach the top100 this year just last week :wavey:

02-06-2010, 11:10 PM
Pico won 6-1 6-4.

There was clearly still a big gap between those two, Feijo never really had chances today. It's good for him to play against these guys to see he has a lot to improve and what he has to do to beat them.

Huge week for him in many aspects, I think he has grown up like a player a lot in Santiago.

Bahia time now, Jo entered as an special exempt and will face 5th seed Victor Hanescu in the first round. Let's hope he stays strong and maybe we can see another upset from him.

Haha, thought about this after every win. Nice prediction :yeah:

Hope he keeps this up, will be tough against Hanescu 1st round in Costa. Don't forget it weren't the best players he defeated this week. Hanescu is a level up.

02-07-2010, 10:24 PM
great week in chile for joao

his lack of matches at this level, against players like pico, was obvious at the beginning but he improved during the match and I believe this match will help him a lot

agree with ad wim, hanescu is a tough first round
but these matches will help him, thats just the experience he needs now
good luck feijao :wavey:

Jo lost to Hanescu 6-7 4-6 after having a small advantage in the TB.

Now he's ATP 121!

I'm happy for him too, because he is going to play singles only wednesday in Pereira Challenger. He must be exhausted right now. I hope tomorrow he'd be all right. His draw is amazing in Pereira to get at least a semifinal.

There hasn't been an update in this thread for a while so now is a perfect time for an update on the career of Feijao. Feijao made it up to #101 in 2010 before finishing the season at #111, winning a challenger and making the finals of another during the second half of the season. 2011 was a breakthrough season for Joao, as he made it to the semifinals of Kitzbuhel in late July after qualifying, beating Andujar in the SF before losing to Haase in the finals. Along with that result, he made the QF of Bucharest, qualified for the US Open, won a challenger in Santos, Brazil and made the finals of another in Zagreb, Croatia. He got into the top 100 for the first time at a career-high #84 in 2011 before finishing #104 and making the Australian Open directly for his first ever direct-MD acceptance in a grandslam.

In 2012, Feijao has a 4-9 record. He made the QF in Vina Del Mar in late January, defeating Volandri and Fernando Gonzalez in his home event, before losing to Chela in a tough 3-set match. After this, however, he hasn't been winning much, so hopefully he can begin to turn around his season soon. He lost in the first round of the Barranquilla challenger this week 6-1 6-7(5) 4-6 to Bagnis and defends his Santos challenger title in a couple weeks, so he needs some more points to ensure his position in the French Open MD. His next scheduled tournament is in Houston the week after next; hope he can manage to make a good run there!

Feijao is fortunately secure to make the French Open direct, but he is still struggling for form.

In Davis Cup vs Colombia in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, he lost his live singles rubber 3-6 4-6 4-6 to Giraldo. However Brazil advanced 4-1 into the World Group playoff stage as Bellucci won his two matches, and Feijao won his dead rubber 4-6 6-3 6-4 over Farah.

In Houston R1, Feijao lost 3-6 4-6 to Anderson, holding serve 4/9 times in the match. Next week, his Santos points will be dropping, so hopefully Feijao can find some form soon. He isn't on the entry list of Santos but expect him to take a WC into the event next week.
