This year AO has no/few surprises so far.

IMO the only big surprise was Nalbandian 2nd Round lost to Lu, what do you think?

See the seeded list that is out of the tournament.

10 Nalbandian lost to Lu
16 Soderling lost to Bagdathis
25 Karlovic lost to Ancic
27 Lopez lost to Muller
28 Mathieu lost to Delic
29 Tusunov lost to Cipolla
30 Schuettler lost to Sela
32 Kohlschreiber lost to Santoro

Which match result surprised you most?

Are any other matches for seeded or non seeded players that surprised you?

When Nalbandian loses its never a shock when Nalbandian wins its never a shock such is the nature of the man.

nalbandian's loss was by far the most dissapointing, but not so surprising.

You are right, he has the game to win to almost everyone if he desires. His "problem" is that he doesn't train as much as other players, but this time I thought he would advance much more as he came from winning a tournament one of the first weeks of the year and this is not so common for Nalbandian.

Any non seeded games that surprised you?

What about Dabul first match?

Agree.

What surprise me is that the 36 year old is still taking tennis seriously... even all the new French stars.

I agree, I started the thread putting the list of seeded players that lost, the same happened with Soderling loosing t Bagdathis. IMO Bagdathis was favourite.

Who has the betting rates for these matches?

Obviosuly Nalba was a surprise but then again also not. This all means tennis is in good shape and things are really tight at the top. For me its more interesting this way.

It could lead to better late round matches if more seeded players remain

Lopez lost to Muller
Mathieu lost to Delic
Tusunov lost to Cipolla (not that much concidering Dima's form lately)
Kohlschreiber lost to Santoro.

I am never surprised when Nalbandian losses against anyone (or when he wins against anyone, as I like Murray correctly stated).

Yes, for now, almost no surprises at the AO, and almost every match of the "Big" with bum-bum scoring.

It's just beginning...

Potential upsets for:

Nadal - against Haas, Gonzo, Gasquet, Simon, Ancic or Monfils.
Murray - against Steps, Blake, Verdasco, Tsonga
Djoko - against Bags or Rod
Fed - against Del Potro, Berdy, Wawa or Cilic

I think what will make it the most interesting however is if all 4 seeds advance. Those are the matches I wanna see.

that must be a record!

except for Dave's loss and maybe Kohlschreiber's, the rest were pretty much expected

Why is Nalbandian's loss considered an "upset"?

Player seeded 10th loses to player ranked 61st????
Player seeded 10th just wins an ATP Tourney and supposed to be confident???

Don't be  this is a surprise to some of us.

Maybe if you looked at a player's history and slam results instead of going by seed alone you wouldn't be shocked by the obvious.

Maybe if you looked at a player's history and slam results instead of going by seed alone you wouldn't be shocked by the obvious.

Who you are referring to. If it is Nalbandian, I still think it is the biggest surprise so far.

These are Nalbandian 2008 GS results:

25-Aug-08 US Open R32 150 14-Sep-09
14-Jan-08 Australian Open R32 150 2-Feb-09
25-May-08 Roland Garros R64 70 8-Jun-09
23-Jun-08 Wimbledon R128 10 6-Jul-09

These are 2008 Lu's ones:
25-Aug-08 US Open R64 70 14-Sep-09
23-Jun-08 Wimbledon R128 10 6-Jul-09
14-Jan-08 Australian Open R128 10 2-Feb-09

But I do not want to talk only about Nalbandian, I want people's opinion regarding if there was any surprise I am missing...

Comparing to other years there are no/few surprises and almost all Top 10 are doing really very good...

It is very strange that so far almost everything is going as expected... and in some cases, top players are doing better than I would have thought. At least I expected some of them to loose a set...

Let's see if today there are surprises...

meihaditalab

Nalbandian for sure

mgorganchian
01-23-2009, 01:00 AM
Have you ever seen Nalbandian GS or Aus open results?
Did you see Lu's ones?

Lu's has 6 1st Round lost and 3 2nd Round... that's all

Aus 2008:
Lu 2nd R
Nalb 3rd R

Aus 2007:
Lu 2nd R
Nalb 4th R

Aus 2006:
Nalb SF

Aus 2005:
Nalb QF
Lu 1st R

Aus 2004:
Nalb QF

Aus 2003:
Nalb QF

IMO Nalbandian doesn't have an average bad GS performance and Lu's ones was too bad so far...

I do not like Nalbandian's attitude towards tennis, but this time your comment to look at his history and slam results instead of going by seed doens't make sense to me...

If Nalbandian is/was a top ten is due that he had above average results in important events as he usually does not play too many tournaments ...

I think nobody could said that Lu had better chances to win than Nalbandian...

Even though 8 seeds out is surprisingly little, all these matches above are pretty surprising to me, except indeed Ancic.

And indeed, a boring start leads to a great finish. And boring start? I've seen some really nice matches already!

12 of the top 16 seeds still alive in the 4th round

Only #15 Wawrinka (crushed by Berdych), #11 Pics (who's loss to Cilic wasn't too surprising), #16 Soderling (who is as reliable in slams as a used car salesman), and #10 Fat Dave (need I say more  )

2nd week will be mouth watering
