If you take the best 4 in the world (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Murray) I'd say that Federer and Murray are unbeatable for a player like Haas at the moment. However, Djokovic is playing badly at the moment and Nadal is not the world class player he is on clay and grass...So there's definitely a chance for Haas when he plays well and gets through into Round 3. Be aware of him, Rafa
Waiting for the schedule of play...;)

wow that's definitelly better.. Tursunov is winnable. But first match is Schwank, so good luck with that :)

I guess we'll see Tommy on Monday since he's in the top half!

We should look from match to match. 3rd round would be great, but it's a looong way. Tommy lost his comeback-match against Hartfield on HC last year and Schwank is definitely the better player. Well let's see. ;)

Wow, completely forgot about the Open during the last few days. :P Draw ist ok, and good to hear Tommy was actually on a court again and won, even if it was just a show match. Will be weird to finally see him in action again. ;)
I think this draw is a perfect indicator for Tommy to see where he stands now. If he can push himself to the 3rd round, I think that would be a great success for now. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Can't wait to get my butt in front of the TV and start cheering like hell again. ;)

Btw, nice to see that Tommy still gets some recognition, like in this analysis on the official AO site (http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2009-01-16/200901161232074819875.html?promo=sub_toparticles):

In the top half of the draw, Nadal will be trying to become the first Spaniard ever to capture the Australian crown. His draw looks easier than Federer’s, though Germany’s Tommy Haas, a three-time semi-finalist, could pose an early threat.

Exactly. Tommy, not Tursunov, who is actually seeded. ;)

Tommy will play the 4th match on Show Court 2, which is in fact a TV Court. Before Tommy's match (11:00 Start, 01:00 CET) two women's singles and one men's singles will be played. So I expect Tommy to start around 7 a.m. CET.

ALRIGHT! successful comeback so far, I'd say. Not perfect, but Tommy played well most of the time, especially after the break in the first. And the best thing imo was that he looked like he was really having fun most of the time, enjoying competing again. That's good.
Now I'm curious in what Tommy has to say, and how Tursunov is gonna fare; he's in a third set TB right now; doesn't seem to be an overly impressive performance. Hope he loses.

Lugburz
01-20-2009, 08:26 AM
I wouldn't care much of Tursunov...If Tommy enjoys his time ,that's all up to him,he can beat anyone...

01-20-2009, 10:43 AM
Well, a Tommy Haas certainly returns the ball differently compared to Rochus, but yeah, good performace by Nadal. But he's still far away.

I agree that Tursunov would have been the better preparation for Tommy, but on the other hand, he needs every round, every match now, and chances are clearly better for him now to reach round 3.

Looks like once again Tommy will be the only German in round 3, unless Berrer surprises me. Not much has changed, it seems. Makes me proud, on one hand, but on the other it's pretty sad ...

6-1, 6-2, 6-1. Reads extremely well. ;) And 36 winners in about 90 minutes ... nice. Only his first serve could use some polishing; not as many free points on serve as he will surely need against Rafa.
Yes, not much of an opponent today, but I guess Tommy will be happy as much as we are that he achieved his obviously primary goal with such ease, and that he's still classes away from what his current ranking position suggests. It's a pity that he hits Nadal that early in the tournament, but on the other hand, these matches are what Tommy is looking forward to, that's why he's still playing, and he may get a night match on centre (as Nadal also had to play a day match today), and he would really have earned that. So looking forward to it. :)
Let's hope we'll get another "Tommy vs. No.1 sensation" as we got in 2006 against Roger. :D

Tommy :yeah: His tennis game really looks good to me after all the health problems and being off Tour for some time :) However, he hasn't really played anyone in the Tournament yet. It is a real shame he has to face Nadal so early on :( But all the Tournament points are free for Tommy. So all the points he picks up will help him move back up in the Rankings :D So really it is all good ;)

It's good to see that Tommy can still do it but really, we need some backup guy who goes at least over the 2nd round in a GS. Unfortunately Tommy won't be around forever.

Q. Tommy Haas in the next round. It's going to be a hard match for you.

RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, going to be the first big opponent I think. Right now, well, gonna be a very good test for see how I am. I going to have to play very well if I want have chances to win, no? I think he won today very easy. So when one player win easy, is good news. Seems he's playing well. I have to play well if I want to win.

They can't really think that more ppl want to follow winter sports on Eurosport - it will be live on either ARD or ZDF - instead of Haas-Nadal, can they? I hope the reason is simply that they don't have the option to have exclusive live coverage only on german TV, which would mean that the german employees aren't to blame.

I should be able to record the ES Player stream, though first I'll have to test tonight if the tools I used the last time still work. And anyways, if it's a good one, I am sure plenty of other ppl will share the match, no worries.

I have to disagree here. A lot of people are following winter sports especailly on Eurosports because the coverage of ARD/ ZDF sucks tremendously, they are not showing the whole race and the commentators are boring.
I admit I am one of the biggest skiing fans and that's why I am obviously looking forward to the Streif. And if it was some other 3rd round match and not Tommy's I'd clearly say that winter sport is in this case more important ;)

EDIT

And he obviously lost his will.

thefly
01-24-2009, 12:01 PM
Well, that was a destruction in the end. Nadal was just too good. He had complete control over his service games pretty much all the time, and Tommy had to dig deep (and indeed produced some great tennis) to stay in the game. The end result in numbers hurts, although it took more than two hours I think. Tommy just isn't up to that level yet (I guess not many ever are, when Nadal plays like that), but I hope he doesn't drag that frustration too far with him over the upcoming weeks. And I hope his body's alright ...

I am not too-down hearted because Nadal was at his best.. I mean,I can't remember when he missed the first serve, and had very very very few errors. But I can't stand that guy, when Tommy was putting a fight Nadals looks at Tommy were disrespectful and disgusting.Credits for the apologies but again when he knew he is gonna win everything changed, like innocent guy.but that's irrelevant ,that just shows how he is on court..
Well,I hope Tommy is OK...I guess it was more because he knew he's gonna lose..
Bottom line that wasn't bad display,I think Tommy was solid, but Nadal was unmistakable...

I think that was one of the best hardcourt performances I've ever seen from Nadal, too bad that it was Tommy who had to suffer from this. I mean, in the second set this guy hit 17 winners and 1 unforced error, that's just incredible...

I even think Tommy played really good tennis today, not outstanding, but I'm convinced it was on a level with which he could have beaten the majority of the top 20 players in the world.

So I am a bit sad, of course, but full of hope for the next tournaments!

I agree with you. If he had gotten more first serves in, in the first set, and gone on to win the first set, it might have demoralized Nadal a little, but Nadal was playing so well, maybe nothing would have made a difference. I am just glad Tommy played reasonably well and was not injured (apparently). I hope he has a great 2009!

Especially in the beginnging of the second set there were some unbelievable rallies. If Tommy could have managed to shift the momentum a little at this stage, he could have had a chance, but Nadal was just too strong on his own serve. Tommy certainly would have earned a tighter outcome, but oh well ...

Can't wait to see that form of Tommy's on display against other good players. ;)

01-24-2009, 07:07 PM
well, what could he do?
Nadal was on top form and it's a shame Tommy couldn't have drawn another seed (who wasn't top 4..) in this round, I'm sure he's havw won against anyone else.
But still, great tourny to come back after a long break, reaching to 3rd round pretty easily, and losing to Nadal isn't bad..
So... what's next? will he play DC?

Andy starts out the Tournment playing a Q in the 1st Rd, a Q in the 2nd Rd, and then for the 3rd Rd he gets the oldest man in the Tournament--Santoro. Who had already had to spend a lot of time on court in his wins before he even got to Andy. We have talked about it here before Tommy never seems to have the luck in the draws that other players do
