yes, because of the sad state of this forum, the only thread that was solely about rafito at the AO was started by a hater  place will need a mod at this rate

the rule was that fedals couldn't start a thread because they couldn't guarantee who they'll root for if rafa played against roger in the final  well, now rafa could well play against muzza before the final and this thread supported both of them. there was no indication that adam would pick rafa over muzza :armed: that's BS. i protest this favoritism

I know Murray is the bookie's favourite and all, but I think that will work against him.

And being a best of 5 event, Rafa has both the mental and physical edge over most, if not all. So, I predict Rafa to win the AO and be the only current player to win Slam on three different "surfraces".

Fair draw for Rafa until the semis. He has some pretty tricky opponents like Monfils or Simon, Hewitt or Gasquet but if he is in a top form we shouldn't worry. I do think Rafa's loss to Monfils in Doha was a fluke. So I am going to make my prediction for MIT. It is not easy since Murray is in his half as almost always in GS. A little offtopic now:

Murray's allocation at GS draws since 2007:
AO 2007 - Rafa's 1/8
FO 2007 - Do not play
WB 2007 - Do not play
US 2007 - Fed's 1/2

AO 2008 - Rafa's 1/2
FO 2008 - Rafa's 1/4
WB 2008 - Rafa's 1/4
US 2008 - Rafa's 1/2

AO 2009 - Rafa's 1/2

So my MIT prediction is going to be either Finalist or Winner. And I will choose Finalist. The Semi will take too much out of him. He always struggles after beating Murray the next match.

It will be interesting to see Nadal's "new" forehand. More importantly I wonder how it will affect him on clay and against Roger Federer. I still think that if he just works on beefing up the serve to make it consistently what it is during Wimbledon and maybe works on coming to the net a bit more, he wouldnt have to take such drastic actions while still being able to keep his advantages.

Nice write up on Rafa by Tom Perrotta.

Late Night Massacre
by Tom Perrotta

It's a beautiful Melbourne evening: A light breeze, dry air (which feels almost like fall air after the 105-degree high of this afternoon) and lots of happy Aussies inside Rod Laver Arena. It's one big party in here--a party at the expense of Christophe Rochus, the small Belgian with miserable luck who must lose to Rafael Nadal tonight. First-round matches in majors often lack suspense, especially when the top seed plays a part. But so far, this one is more than a drubbing. It's like watching a man being fed to a lion, except I have a wireless connection and a very comfortable seat (I imagine the Romans would have enjoyed such amenities).

Nadal continues to stroke winners from every corner of the court (boom! There goes another backhand, this one over the outside net post and into the corner) as poor Rochus looks on in amazement. Nadal claimed the first eight games of the match before Rochus recovered some dignity. Then the Spaniard closed the second set with three consecutive aces. For my money, he has the best forehand in the game, and perhaps the best backhand, too (I refer you to last year's Wimbledon final, in which Nadal hit both the finest slice backhand passing shot and the most remarkable two-handed cross-court bomb I've ever seen). Now he can serve, too?

An opponent like Rochus, of course, doesn't tell us much about the form of the world No. 1. Nadal could win this match in straight sets on his a very bad night. But if you're looking for positive signs, well, there are many. Nadal is serving for the corners and hitting those corners. He's standing close to the baseline during (rather brief) rallies. He's stepping into his returns and moving forward whenever he gets the chance. The question, as always, is whether he'll be able to do that when the competition stiffens.

No matter how well he plays and how many titles he wins, Nadal still doesn't inspire as much confidence on hard courts as he does on clay and grass. This isn't surprising, but perhaps for different reasons, I suspect, than most observers suggest. The book on Nadal is that he often plays too defensively on hard courts (and hits the ball too short), and that he doesn't serve well enough. I don't think that's true these days, as his gold medal run at the Beijing Olympics showed. Nadal plays more aggressively each year, no matter the surface and his game is perfect for hard courts. It just happens to be more perfect for clay and grass. The chief reason? On cement, to my mind, Nadal's superior hand-eye coordination becomes less of an advantage. (Match update: Nadal spins, runs hard to the baseline, and loops a topspin lob winner. The lion roars again.)

How often do you see Nadal mishit the ball or hit an outright shank? Considering how hard he swings, and how much spin he applies with an extreme western grip, not too often. That's the case on clay and grass, too, where the bounces are unpredictable. In the rain, in the dark (the Wimbledon final), in the blinding sun, on clay, on grass--it doesn't matter. For everyone else, it does, or at least, it matters more than it does for Nadal. I can't help but think that his Uncle Toni, who made a point of teaching the young Nadal to deal with shoddy courts and conditions, has a lot to do with his nephew's impeccable timing, no matter what the ball does after it bounces. (Forehand winner down the line; Nadal to serve for the match.)

Hard courts, of course, give the truest bounces in the business. On hard surfaces, Nadal's supreme spin, so effective (and so unpredictable once it crashes into clay or a worn down patch of grass) becomes more predictable. His drop shot, which is underrated, becomes less of a weapon, too.

These are subtle difference, but important ones--differences that define wins and losses against opponents like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. It's not the whole story of Nadal's failure to win a major on a hard court, but it is part of it, and part that is too little discussed.

That said, I fully expect Nadal to win a hard court major or two, and perhaps this one (we'll know more about his chances later in the week, especially if he meets someone like Fernando Gonzalez, the slugger who demolished Nadal here in 2007, when Nadal's offensive skills weren't nearly as developed).

A final update: Nadal detonates another winner to bring on match point, followed by another forehand blast to end this bloody affair, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2. One hour and 17 minutes and one Belgian carcass later, I'm through for the night. By the look of things, Nadal has many nights to go.

Transcribed Interview

Q. Could you have asked for a better start? You seemed to hit your form very quickly today.
RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, well, I played well, especially the serve and the forehand. Well, I play always good concentration all the time. Serving very well, I think. And with the forehand, moving very good the ball around the court.

No, I feeled well.

Q. Is it good to have a match that's over so quickly in the first round?
RAFAEL NADAL: The good thing is win. If is like this, better. So happy for the good start this year in the Australian Open. Happy about my performance today, sure.

Q. Would you say the more improvement you have made is on your serve?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, you know, sometimes good, sometimes a little bit worse. Today good. Today very well. Important things is try to serve like this when the pression moments are there. So that's the things I have to continuing work.

For something, you start to serve well when the score is favorable. Sure, I am happy today about my serve. I have to continuing work. I worked for lot of time for improve my serve.

I think I am always improving a little bit more. I have to continue.

Q. It was so easy. Did you not feel sorry for him?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, you know, the sport is like this. Today I played well. Maybe he didn't play one of his best matches. But the tennis is always difficult because if you are not playing all the time a hundred percent, anyway, if the score today was 6‑0, 6‑2, 6‑2. If I had some mistakes in some moments, he can come close back to me and anything can happen.

Q. Is that dangerous if you lose concentration if it's that easy?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. I think the dangerous thing is if you are not playing with good concentration all the time. You are playing a Grand Slam. Is impossible not be concentrate all the time, no?

Q. I think he will look for another job.
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't think so, no?

Q. He told us just now.
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, he is joking, for sure, no? He is a good player and he gonna to play well in the tournament.

Q. I notice you didn't have a sleeveless shirt on today. Are you sort of getting a bit older?
RAFAEL NADAL: You like it or the prefer the other one (smiling)?

Q. I wouldn't go sleeveless myself. What do you think?
RAFAEL NADAL: I feeled well, no? I feel good. Well, in this moment we gonna play like this. You never know in the future. But right now I am fine like this.

Q. Anything cause the change? Was there any reason to change it up?
RAFAEL NADAL: For change. I don't know.

Q. With Roger and Novak winning well, was it important for you also to send a message to them?
RAFAEL NADAL: That's think too much, no? I am no thinking nothing about this, no? I just think about try to play well myself. Well, Roger and Novak and Murray, they are far. They are far in the draw, no? I just can play with them in semifinals or finals, no? I have to think about next match right now.

Q. Those straps are protection only in the knees?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yes. I play like this for all the time, for long time right now.

Q. It's protection?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yes. I feeling good right now like this.

The world has become accustomed to seeing Nadal mopping up clay court titles and making the French Open his very own, but of late the Spaniard has been branching out. Not only did he break Roger Federer's heart by beating the Swiss in the Wimbledon final, but he also ended 2008 as the best hard court player in the world. Of his 82 wins for the season, 46 of them came on the cement surface. This was indeed a break from the norm.

Transcript of Rafa's R2 presser:

Q. You've only dropped 11 games in two matches. How do you assess your form to this stage? You must be happy.

RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, I am happy, no? Sure, I played before first round, second round. But, anyway, was a good result today. The other guy play very, I think, irregular. Sometimes play well, sometimes he had some mistakes. So was tough match for get the rhythm.

But the result is good. I think I won without problems, no?

Q. Last year you led the tour with wins on hard courts. Does that give you confidence in thinking you can win a Grand Slam on a hard court, as you've done on grass and clay?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I gonna try, no? For sure I think when you think you win in Toronto, you win in Olympics, I have Montréal, I have Madrid, I have Indian Wells in this kind of surface. When you have these tournaments playing against the best players of the world, because in these tournaments are the best players of the world. Why you can't win a Grand Slam in hard court, no?

I always try. Trying to improve always in this surface. Hopefully in this year have a chance for win here or for win in the US Open.

Q. Do you think here or the US Open favors your game, one or the other, better?

RAFAEL NADAL: The thing is play good. If I am playing good, I think I gonna have my chances for have a good result in both.

Q. One thing you've changed is your forehand here. It seems to be a lot flatter. Is that something you've really focused on?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, not true. I didn't know nothing about that (laughter). First new.

Q. Does anything set Melbourne apart for you, make it seem different to you?

RAFAEL NADAL: Is very good city, no? I think is a calm city, big city, but at the same time calm. Problems with my English, no? Calm? No. I think you understand more than my secretary (laughter).

No, I really enjoy the city. Is clean, very clean city. So that's good, no? One of the favorite cities for me I think.

Q. You would have wanted to have played both in Shanghai and in the Davis Cup final last year. But do you think perhaps having missed those two events you are better prepared, it's given you a bit of time perhaps?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. I don't know really. I had time in December for practice ‑ more than in other years. But other years the result were very good, too, no? I hope continues with the same results.

I don't know if gonna be good. I think for some aspects can be good. For some other ones, is a little bit worse. Can be good because you didn't play, you have more time for practice, you have more time for recover mentally from the long season like last year. But at the same time I was more time than the rest outside of competition. So this is a little bit tougher get the rhythm another time.

Anyway, watching the positive thing, I hope if is not here can help me for the season.

Q. Could you tell us in more than one word how Mauritius was?

RAFAEL NADAL: It was well. I was there ‑‑ well, we were there for one week. Yes, was very nice place. I don't know. The people was very nice with me there. I had some activities. I enjoyed a lot. Hope to come back.

Q. Tommy Haas in the next round. It's going to be a hard match for you.

RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, going to be the first big opponent I think. Right now, well, gonna be a very good test for see how I am. I going to have to play very well if I want have chances to win, no? I think he won today very easy. So when one player win easy, is good news. Seems he's playing well. I have to play well if I want to win.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about Albert Costa coming in as the new Davis Cup captain, what you think he brings to the job, good things or bad things.

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, always is good to have a player being a captain. Especially Albert, I think he has a very good relationship with all the players. I was playing the same time with him. I know him, I think. He always was a team player. Right now for me is the best captain we can have, no?

Q. Do you think he has a lot of pressure? Obviously, Emilio has done quite well with the team.

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, Emilio won, and the lost the first three years. So doesn't matter, no? The thing is be there, win or lose is another thing. Doesn't depend only the captain. The captain is more. But I think the captain is more important for have a good atmosphere on the team. I don't know. The important thing for me in the captain is have a captain ‑‑

THE INTERPRETER: That he makes a good atmosphere on the team so that people want to go and play Davis Cup.

RAFAEL NADAL: That's more important thing because in the end is not like a football team, then you play, no?

Q. There's a lot of interest in your new outfits. Some of your fans on the websites don't seem to like them too much, your clothes. Do you like the change of image?

RAFAEL NADAL: What happened? The fans didn't like?

Q. Some of them don't.

RAFAEL NADAL: Sorry (laughter). I don't know.

No, I am feeling okay. I am feeling well. For sure, when you have a change, some people like, other people don't like. For sure with the sleeveless, not everybody like the sleeveless. Right now gonna be the same, no?

But, anyway, is a change. But I feel good like this. Important thing in the end is not the clothes; is the ball and racquet and play well.

Q. Tommy Haas is coming back from an injury. How much do you know about his history, his story, his shoulder problems, all that kind of stuff? Did you follow that? Are you aware of it?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I know him for a long time, no? I played a lot of matches. A lot. I don't know if a lot. But I played some matches against him.

He had important injuries in his career. That's tough for a big player like him. He had very good result. He had for two years outside the court. He came back and he start another time playing well. Right now he had ‑‑ well, last year he had another time some problems, but is coming back.

Look, he's in third round another time. So he's a very good player. Always for everybody is tough, dangerous. When he came back, always he's there, no?

Q. Is there something special you have to fear about his game?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I think he's a very complete player. He can play slice, good backhand, good forehand. He can go to the volley. He have a good serve. No, he can do everything. If I want to win, I have to put more rhythm and intensity than him.

Q. You have many fans in Australia. You see Rafa on the T‑shirts. Does that help you make you more relaxed when you go on the court, thinking that a lot of them are on your side?
RAFAEL NADAL: Not more relaxed, no. That's always nice have the crowd with you. Just can say thank you very much everybody, no?

Rafa's presser:

Q. Can you play any better than that?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, always you can improve, no? Perfect matches doesn't exist. But today, especially after a few games, after the first three, four games, I started to play well. In the beginning, I was playing too short little bit. And Tommy has the control of the points on the court. But that change after the beginning of the match.

For that reason, I have the victory, no? I play more inside the court with the forehand. Improving a little bit more with the backhand, too. Very happy to be in fourth round for another year.

Q. Do you think you're playing better at this stage this year than the same stage last year?

RAFAEL NADAL: I never compared year by year, no? I don't like the comparisons. Last year, I played the semifinals here. Was a very good result for the start of the season. Right now, I am in fourth round. For sure the toughest matches still to come.

Against González, this match going to be a very tough match. He's coming with big confidence after two big wins against Hewitt the first round, and right now against Gasquet with unbelievable comeback, two sets down. He's coming with confidence. Going to be a very tough opponent.

Q. Do you think you owe him a victory here after he beat you easily two years ago?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, he beat me very easy two years ago here. So it wasn't play one of my best matches. He played well.

Well, he's tough. He's very good player. He can beat me, for sure, another time. Hopefully not. But I gonna try my best for try to change the situation from two years, for try to play the same level like last year in Olympics.

Q. How much of a factor do you think it is that he had so long on court tonight, whereas you've been very quick with the matches you had?

RAFAEL NADAL: Hopefully affect a lot (smiling). But I think that's not gonna happen, no? He didn't play with the sun, with the hot. That's gonna be important factor.

And, well, for sure he going to be a little bit more tired. But he's very strong, no? He's very strong player physically. The same time he going to be with more confidence than ever, no, because he beat against big player like Richard, and he had a very good comeback. So that's very important for the confidence.

Q. Does that come into your strategy, to run him around early?

RAFAEL NADAL: Doesn't matter. I never think about that, no? I only think about try to play my game, try to play aggressive with my forehand, and try to be very concentrate with the serve, no?

Q. How did you find the conditions out there tonight?

RAFAEL NADAL: Very good, no? No wind. That's always easier for play. Very good atmosphere. So, very happy for everything, no? The crowd support was always there supporting me. So that's very nice when you come on court and feel the support of the crowd. So can say thanks very much to all the Australian people, no?

Q. After your results last year, after becoming world No. 1, how motivated are you to show what you're capable of at this tournament?
RAFAEL NADAL: The same motivation like every year. Every year when I came here, I came with my best motivation, try my best all the time. This year I gonna try the same, so... One number don't change motivation, no?

Anyone else getting excited now given Nadal's form?

Metis
01-26-2009, 11:39 AM
I prefer to not get excited and attribute it partly to Gonzo's having played a long 3rd round match (not to mention all the tapes he was wearing on his leg).

I watched a few games of the Tsonga-Blake match and Tsonga seemed to be in great form, maybe almost as good as last year's (?)

GuiroNl
01-26-2009, 11:51 AM
From what I saw Tsonga was indeed playing fine tennis but I don't think he's at the level of last year. Of course, if he is to reach the final Tsonga is probably the hardest player left in the top half of the draw for him.

Still, I think Rafa is much better than he was last year and playing well enough to counter Tsonga. We'll see though, just happy to see him play well right now.

True that. Tsonga is playing well I saw his match vs Blake, he was serving solid and I don't know whether Blake is a bad returner or Tsonga's serves are just hard to return. I'm happy you are into the semis, Rafa :bigclap:

Rafa's presser is up. Nice analysis in the first paragraph.

Q. You're through to the semifinals without dropping a set again, like last year. Can you compare your level here this year versus last year?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, I never like the comparisons between years. This year I am playing more regular than last year, no? I think last year I played against Troicki saving set points, against Serra I think easy. Next I played against Simon, saving set points. Today tough match, too, without playing very well, and against Mathieu I didn't play very well.

The feeling I am playing well. I only had little bit worse match the second round, but for the rest I played very good third round. Against González and Simon I think was very good matches.

Today was tough, because play against Simon is always difficult. I can't play exactly my rhythm because when I play my rhythm with the forehand trying to change directions with the forehand for him is good, no? I think he feels very well two meters behind the line and running all the time.

I think I had to change a little bit the strategy, trying to play a little bit more slice, short balls, try to change the rhythm, no? Play higher, play lower. So that's what I try today.

Q. Sounds like you're playing better. What is the difference? Is it your serving? What's improved this year?

RAFAEL NADAL: If I play the same like all the year last year, you give me a paper and I sign, no?

The thing is always have illusion for improve. I never lost this illusion for continuing improve my tennis. I think I have little bit more things to do than a few years ago. I can slice a little bit more, I can go a little bit more to the net. I am playing a little bit better inside the court. That's the things that I am improving, no, or trying to improve. The serve, I improved, but for sure I need improve more.

Q. Will it be very emotional to play a compatriot, Fernando Verdasco, in the semifinal?

RAFAEL NADAL: Always is good to play against another Spanish player in semifinals of Grand Slam, no? Is very good news for us. One player gonna be in the Final. But, you know, Fernando is playing at his best level. I never played against him when he's playing at the level like right now, because I think he never played at this level before, beating Murray, beating Tsonga. Sometimes in the past he had some mistakes in important moments and he lost a little bit of concentration. But right now he's changing these things, no?

I think he play very well in Brisbane, but right now he's playing well, no? I saw his two matches against Tsonga and Murray. He was very focused all the time, knowing what he want to do all the time. So going to be very tough.

Q. Will that be a good feeling for you, playing against another Spanish player, someone you know well, compared to against someone you don't know very well?

RAFAEL NADAL: No difference, no? The only difference, we both from Spain. We have good very relation. Good thing, one Spanish player going to be in the Final. So this is no different because in the end you play against a rival. This time the rival is another friend. But, anyway, going to be very tough.

Q. You're from a hot country. How important is it going to be for players to stay out of the heat as they're going further into the tournament?

RAFAEL NADAL: Believe me, not like here. I never had the same ‑‑ I never feel the same like today when I was warming up outside.

Q. How do you think people from places that are cooler than where you come from are going to be handling the situation?

RAFAEL NADAL: It is a little bit easier for players who are from the countries with very hot. But in our case, I think is not like here, like this, no? In Spain is the winter right now. Is cold, very cold. So if you are from, I don't know, Argentina, right now is the summer, is a little bit easier because you arrive with the same conditions. But for us is much different.

Q. Does having the roof closed or opened, the way it changes the way the court plays, is that good for your game or bad for your game?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, in the end you have to play well in both situations, no? Change a little bit, but not too much. Maybe is a little bit faster with the roof. But that's it.

Could you please explain me why playing under a closed roof is considered faster than playing under the open roof? I mean physics-wise. What makes it faster? Let for example assume all other factors are the same. Play at night, same surface, same court, same balls, same players and everything else. Just the roof ON/OFF is the variable.
Thanks.

I think conditions are supposed to be slower with the roof closed, actually. Apparently there is a real lack of humidity in Melbourne, but with the roof closed, it causes much more humid conditions, thus slowing the ball down.

Simon:hearts: So full of praise for Rafa:dance:

Q. What is your take on the match today?

GILLES SIMON: What do you think (smiling)?

Q. You played it.

GILLES SIMON: Yeah, I played it. Unfortunately for me, I gave him the break every time in the first game of every set. It was hard after to come back. I didn't manage in the first set. It was better in the second and third. But finally, he was far better than me.

I mean, the last time I saved so many breakpoints and everything, and this time no one. Every time I had the chance, he played better than me. He hits a winner every time. I mean, he was just too good today.

Q. Is that a matter of experience, that he plays best on the big points?

GILLES SIMON: No, I don't know. I think it's a matter of level. I really have to do some unbelievable shots sometimes just to come back in the match, and then it's hard to play like this. It's harder in three sets, 'cause when you start the match, when finally you lose the set, then you know you have three more sets to win if you want to win the match. So it's harder.

But, I mean, I just gave what I had. It was a good match.

Q. You thought you got the maximum out of it, the maximum you could achieve?

GILLES SIMON: I don't know. You never know. Sometimes just one points or two points different and the match can change. I mean, I have a set point. Even if I have no chance, because he played a good serve, and then he hits the forehand. So there was nothing to do.

But, I mean, it's just one point, and if you win it, it can be a different match. It can always be better. But I think I did what I had to do on the court. He was just better than me today. He didn't miss anything. He didn't give any point during three sets. He was serving very well.

Q. You're happy with what you've achieved this tournament?

GILLES SIMON: Yes, of course. It was the first time I was on the top eight seed and I reached the quarterfinals. So that's why I told you I did what I had to do on this match, on the tournament. It's very nice for me.

But when you lose a match, you're never happy. I know that I had some chance to do better, and I really wanted to win maybe just one set, but just to feel different. To lose three sets to Love, it's always hard.

Q. How do you assess Rafael's chances of going on and winning the tournament?

GILLES SIMON: I mean, he has a good chance to win. He's No. 1, so... He didn't lose any set. He's playing very good. Maybe Roger because he did a very nice match yesterday. But I don't know. If he's playing like this, he have a really good chance to win.

Q. What is better about his serve?

GILLES SIMON: I don't know. It seems to me that I returned better the last time I played against him. And this time, it was only better in the third set. But in the two first sets, he did so many winners with his serve. Finally we were just playing from the baseline, but on my serve. So that's why it was a good match.

But I was just not able to break him. That was good for confidence, I mean. I think that's why he was really good in every important point because he hits a winner any time. I think you can watch the video. Every time I had the chance, he touched the line or... So there was nothing to do.

Q. Do you think that's the big difference from the match in Madrid?

GILLES SIMON: Yes, I think, really. In the first set, it was really better, it was 6‑2. That's not a problem. But if you have one chance, you have to take it against him. You can't have three, four, five opportunities. That's too much. If you miss one or two, then you lose in three sets, just like this.

I think I was better in Madrid. But finally it's very close.

Q. What is his biggest strength?

GILLES SIMON: The mental. I don't know. He's doing everything very well on the court. He has a lot improved his game. He's able to run. He can attack. He can comes to the net when it's important. Sometime it was 15‑30 on his serve, and then he did a serve and volley.

Every time I play against him, he's the best player, I think. He's still improving.

Foxy,

I don't know why people say it makes it faster ... My reasoning as engineer goes as follows: When the roof is closed the temperature inside the enclosed area drops a few degrees. Making the fair assumption that the atmospheric pressure stays the same, then the air is slightly more dense the lower the temperature is, thus oppossing slight more resistance to objects travelling through it. Therefore with the roof close, the balls will be a tad slower. However the difference is almost negligible. I don't know why people keep saying the ball goes faster with the roof closed. I would like to hear their reasoning.

OK, let's take Hamburg. The general assumption was that Djokovic had an advantage playing Nadal under the roof. Why? I still can't get it. Maybe it is just topsin related?

Simple: It's all about the spin. With the extreme heat the balls become heavier and Nadal top-spin becomes a fraction less effective. For players who play flatter than Nadal [99.9% of the tour] it's something similar - their shots become more flatter [we are talking about very tiny differences] and thus give defending type of players less time to reach the ball. In a way people assume that less time to reach the attacking shot = less effective defense = more effective offence = faster court. Which isn't exactly right, but it's that way things are seen around here.

OK, let's take Hamburg. The general assumption was that Djokovic had an advantage playing Nadal under the roof. Why? I still can't get it. Maybe it is just topsin related?

Yes, it's all top-spin related. Even if Hamburg was known for the slowest clay-court Masters it's more suited to Federer's game than to Nadal's because on impact the court produces less top-spin than the other clay courts. So Federer both has the time to move to take the shot [it's still clay] and then hit it low so that it's difficult to return.
The roof also eliminates all outside forces like wind and sun which are more problematic to the attacking players, since they have to have more precision in placing the balls on or near the lines.

Your optimism has to be curbed somehow:(. We cannot have that sort of thing here. Maybe Rafa will have another Seppigate in upcoming tournaments and that will bring you down:lol:

I wouldn't consider it optimism, I don't really expect him to win the final should he make it, I just like seeing Fedtards squirm

A really good win although I wasn't impressed by Nadal's play at all (read: he sucked), hitting many groundstrokes short and an insane amount of BH slice shots.

Anyway, first time that a form horse doesn't take him out in a HC slam, hope that he recovers for the final.

Rafa :worship:

Congratulations for your first HC GS final :bigclap:

I could say even harsher words than "he sucked" but since this is a cheering thread I won't. I expect a huge improvement for the final. Hopefully he'll be OK by then. How unfair that he always gets some on fire players for 3rd consecutive year

But now it's time for celebration since Rafa is into the final. I'll worry about it when the time comes :)

really nice interview http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/interviews/2009-01-30/200901301233244960359.html
but
Q. Do you plan to play closer to the baseline against Federer? Tonight you had to run really a lot.
RAFAEL NADAL: Was tough to be more inside, no? What do you think? Did you see the speed of the ball or not (laughter)?

Q. I saw he was able to stay farther in front.
RAFAEL NADAL: I would love to be more inside, yeah. I gonna try to be more inside for the final, but I am playing against Federer.

This is a case of good news vs. bad news. The good news is he won the Match :) But the bad news is he probably wore himself out in the process of winning the Match plus if he plays like that when he plays The Fed it will be GSM for The Fed  And I hate the thought of The Fed winning yet another Grand Slam :ras:

Best match of week to my mind. Many, many congrats to Rafa, he is amazing, how he keeps improving. Up to last year, allegedly he was only a clay courter, then he wins Wimbledon. Now, he has his first hardcourt slam in his sights and no one in their right mind would bet against him.

Bring on the classic final. :bounce:

At this point, I'm just beyond happy that Rafa has made the final.

Of course, come Sunday morning I will be cursing Mr Priss to the heavens :D but for now I am feeling only delighted that Rafa has achieved something I feared he never would :worship: :worship:

Rafa said he was having back cramps in his presser (Spanish one I think :awww:) and also that he had started crying when he got to 0-40 in the last game.
