i didn't even think ernie played that bad, too be honest, pretty much the same as yesterday. the thing was that mathieu was really solid out there today and didn't give him any errors, WAY less patchy than i'd hoped him to be.

ernie still needs to learn the art of body language on court btw, too little positive emotion for my taste.

ernie needs to mature a bit, too much testosterone out there. absolutely smacking the ball every chance he got. PHM loves rhythm and Gulbis dutifully provided it today without varying the pace of his own shots. I am excited to see PHM playing well. It's been a very long time since a solid performance like that.

It does seem to be a pattern. Gulbis has not reached a SF at any level since the beginning of 2008 -- that must be a hallmark of inconsistency. There will be few if any players in the top-100 or even top-200 for which you can make the same statement ('not reached a SF at any level'). Of course I am exaggerating a bit because his QF at RG wsa pretty good, but still.

Berdych isn't the only baby Safin anymore.

gulbis was pretty shit really, he made a lot of errors and was getting mad at everything (although a lot of line calls went against him and the umpire missed an obvious let)
mathieu played well but not fantastic :shrug:

I really don't get Gulbis. He has the physique and the talent to do great stuff, does it yesterday and then muffs it against PHM. He shows quite a lot of character and personality in his interviews to make me think that the mental side wouldn't neccessarily be a problem. Maybe it's just "heart" and it's difficult to quantify that.
