Dent had an early break and was serving for the first set before he lost his serve twice in a row. I wish I could have seen this match. Richie's last win of the previous season was against a player with a similar style to Dent (Fish, in Madrid), and Gasquet was quite happy belting passing shots over and over again then.

Just shows how Richie has worked on fighting back when things aren't going his way. :yeah:

I would like that, but none of us saw the match. It might just as well have been Dent dropping his level.

Just been talking with an Aussie fan who was there and he said Richard played really well, Dent is a decent player but this is the sort of player Richard needs to beat, he was 5-2 down in the first set and at other times he would have just given up. I think this is a good positive move forward for him. Onwards and upwards!

He'll have to prove that against far better players than the ones he has faced so far.
Tsonga(if he beats Nieminen) in the next round would be a revealing test of his supposed new mental toughness.

Pity. But it was a stronger opponent, and I was reasonable enough not to expect a win here. But judging from the scoreline, a good effort nevertheless.

Just stay healthy, Taylor! And good results will be achieved then! :yeah:

Reggie,
I was exactly like you 2 or 3 years ago, getting quickly excited about Gasquet after almost each wins.......but now,i've learnt my lessons :o

Yep,good point.
That's the same when he faces Feliciano Lopez(another serve and volleyer) for instance.

Richie21 I don't get massively excited over the small wins but I do think we as fans (not you because I know you have a different view point to us as you have been frustrated (very at times on MTF!) by Gasquet's results, just take each day at a time. He had such a crap year last year (I know not many of us admit it but I am a realist) and I am just glad for any wins that he does get. Is it likely that he will beat Jo? No, if he shows up minus any confidence, then no he won't. But each small win will/should increase his confidence and this will ultimately get him through the tough matches. Also, Richard does not play well against his friends usually.
I just want him to play his best tennis and be happy on and off the court because last year he clearly wasn't.

Just got home from watching this. He actually played very well this match. Stopped staying back and played aggressive tennis. Got off to a sloppy start but raised his level by heaps towards the end. This is good tennis.

I'm surprised that Dent won this many games with Gasquet's passing abilities.

If he can schedule the right way (his gamestyle clearly doesn't work on clay), he could fin himself back in the top 100 for the grass courts.

Gasquet as usual seems to be playing half-ass but it was enough this time.
I wish he would get a little more motivated.
This surface works for his variety.

I've predicted his will be Richard's season. I think it's his time to step up to the plate.

Richie21, do you think one of Richard's problems is a lack of motivation? I think it may have been the case in the past but this year he seems really fired up (well as fired up as Gasquet can be! he's just a very mild mannered character and sometimes I wonder if this is why he loses his way in matches) but I think 2009 will/should be much better for him :D

I think his problem has been motivation/expectation/pressure because he was always the next big thing in France and so much expected from him. But with Tsonga and Simon stepping to the fore there is much pressure off him and a lot of the attention has drifted away from him. This will cause him to be more relaxed and focused and perform better, he's not the kind of person that thrives under pressure.

My 6th sense worth.
