Q&A with Amer Delic

Wednesday 21 January 2009
By Betina Correya

Q. How do you feel about winning your match against Paul-Henri Mathieu today? You looked a little out of it …

Amer Delic: Oh man, it was awful tennis. Obviously I give credit to Paul; he played well. I wasn’t necessarily nervous, it was just that I was trying to stick to my game plan. I had it, but I just didn’t execute it. And then finally in the third set, I was back to the wall, I relaxed a little bit and tried to play it the way I like to play. Obviously it was a little bit of a different story. I think the adrenalin is still kind of flowing. So I’m pretty good, but I think in about an hour or two I’ll be crashing. I’m glad I got through this and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Q. How do you hold up in consecutive five-set matches in hot conditions?

AD: I guess you follow up with another five-set match. My body is good; I did my off-season training. Obviously I’m going to go and refresh the legs, and I’ll have another day off and we’ll see. Adrenalin gets you through .. It’s never easy playing a five-setter. I think the first day that I played it was a little bit hotter, but we didn’t have as long rallies.

Q. What did you think of the rowdy supporters in your match today?

AD: I think what happened was some Serbian followers came and then they were cheering back and forth across the court. I couldn’t control any of that, I was trying to, but I felt bad for Paul and I apologised to him right after it happened. It’s

tough, obviously. I like those fans - they’re getting me through these matches - but I think today was bad at the times when the other side came across. The fans are energetic. I’m Bosnian-American, but the fans still feel like I’m Bosnian. I was born and lived in Bosnia until I was 14. They’re proud of me and I’m proud of them. What’s wrong with cheering for your country?

Q. How hard is it to concentrate when your fans are being rowdy?

AD: It wasn’t easy because I’m the middleman for this circus out there … It was hard. The adrenalin was flowing, I was trying to calm them down.

Q. You will play Novak Djokovic in the third round. Have you played him before?

AD: I played Novak in Wimbledon two years ago. It was 7-6 in the fourth set and I lost, but it was a good match. It was on the grass, so different surface, different day.

Q. Do you think you can beat Djokovic at this stage of the tournament?

AD: Why not? Things have been going my way; why stop it here?

Q. Have you seen much of Melbourne?

AD: This is my fifth year in Melbourne, and I haven’t really seen anything other than tennis courts and hotels, so I’m still here as a tourist … I’ve been seeing these commercials for the aquarium here. I actually went to my first cricket match the weekend before the qualifiers started, so that was kind of cool going to the MCG. My coach Craig O’Shannessy is Australian, so he kind of guided me through that. I went to a Twenty20 (match), so that was kind of easy to understand.

Q. Didn’t you have Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley as a coach in the past?

AD: Craig was my college coach for three years at the University of Illinois. He’s been a mentor, almost like a second father to me.

Q. What motivates and inspires you? What gets you back on track?

AD: Do I really need any more motivation than the fact that I’m still a lucky loser here? I’m playing in front of fans that come out here and watch us. This is my job being a tennis player - do I really need anything else?

Q. Who’s your favourite player of all-time?

AD: Either Patrick Rafter or Stefan Edberg. They’re just classic guys and fun to watch.

01-21-2009, 03:00 PM
:hearts: Thanks for posting Deb:)

01-21-2009, 03:02 PM
I was at the match :timebomb: the atmosphere was insane. I have to thank the Serbian hecklers for firing Amer up - he looked ready to give in tamely before they came and annoyed everyone :p After that he had a look on his face, like, "Screw you - not only Serbs could win tennis matches."

Paulo was much better off the ground, of course, but Amer kept playing aggressively and snuck through quite a few lovely winners. The aces column helped him too.

01-21-2009, 03:12 PM
They got a camera out to the court and showed a fair bit of the fifth set. I was really impressed at his composure - something he's not really known for. He just kept holding his serve so easily and throwing down the big serves. It was great to see. I wish he could be so consistent all the time but look at his inconsistency even within matches. anyway, this is a fantastic result for him. And it sounds like he handled the whole 'dueling fan groups' situation quite well. It's not like he knows the guys personally, but very stand-up for him to apologize to Paulo anyway. Glad you had fun at the match!

01-21-2009, 03:37 PM
Well my hope is that next match he will be on a show court and I can actually watch for a change.
Thanks for the info Jitterbug:)

Can't wait for the next match up.

Lucky loser all right: Delic moves into 3rd round

By JOHN PYE – 16 minutes ago

MELBOURNE, Australia — Amer Delic need only look at the draw to be reminded of his good fortune at the Australian Open.

He made the field as a lucky loser, and has knocked off No. 28-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu in five sets. Next up is a third-round match against defending champion Novak Djokovic.

"Things have been going my way," he said. "Why stop it here?"

Delic rallied from two sets down Wednesday to beat Mathieu 1-6, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 9-7, and now the Bosnian-born American is looking forward to his next match.

"Do I really need any more motivation than the fact that I'm still a lucky loser here and playing in front of fans that have come out to watch me?" he asked.

Two years ago at Wimbledon, he lost to Djokovic in four sets in the second round. The 26-year-old Delic isn't discounting his chances, even if it's the first time in 10 majors that he's reached the third round.

Given the history in the Balkans, and the mix of its migrants to Australia, the atmosphere for Delic's match against the 21-year-old Serb could give him an edge.

Delic's run has attracted a group of enthusiastic fans — unruly according to the father of his vanquished first-round rival, fellow American Taylor Dent; disrespectful by Mathieu's reckoning.

The flag-waving Bosnians who are following Delic traded chants across the court with Serbian fans Wednesday, during, before and after points against his French rival.

"I couldn't control any of that, though I was trying to," Delic said. "I felt bad for Paul and I apologized to him right after."

Any extra tension for Friday's match is what police, local organizers and Delic want to avoid.

He said his family moved to Florida in 1996 to get away from any conflict, his parents wanting to start a new life for he and his sister after the Bosnian war.

"I just hope the next match with Novak doesn't turn into a World War III," he said. "I'm going to try to tell my fans that we don't need to be embarrassing ourselves in front of the world. I'm hoping Novak says something to Serbian fans, also. Leave the politics aside.

"It's not my fault and it's not Novak's fault. We're out here playing tennis and we need to keep it that way."

At the 2007 Australian Open, fighting broke out between Croatian and Serbian fans at Melbourne Park and more than 150 people were removed from the grounds after skirmishes.

As much for security as Djokovic's profile, their match will likely be on center court. It also helps that Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley was his college coach.

Rod Laver Arena is an all-ticket venue, and is the most secure at Melbourne Park. Organizers say general admission tickets are sold out, meaning tickets that become available late will be scattered.

Police will be in force outside.

Djokovic, who beat Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 6-1, 6-3, was ready for a tough reception.

"I don't want underestimate anybody. Delic deserves to be in the third round," he said. "If he came there, of course, he has a lot of qualities. He's a big server. We played in Wimbledon in 2007 and we had a really close match, so I expect the same in this round."

For the first time in six years, Delic is still in contention after two rounds.

And to think, he thought he was heading home after he was wiped 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-0 by Florian Mayer in his third qualifying match.

It'll mean he also has some extra cash.

"This was the first time ever I got in as a lucky loser," he said. "It's like when you lose a wallet and then you find it. It's like the best feeling."

Im sure both of them will do their best to try to stop the fans from getting out of control but it wont of the world will never understand the hate between the three groups (Croats,Serbs,Bosnaks) and it wont stop anytime will with time once kids that were born after 1998 or 2000 are the leaders of those countries..90% of the people have moved on and get along but that 10% wont ever let it go...well anyways good luck to Amer, hopefully he puts up a good fight vs Djokovic.

01-21-2009, 09:22 PM
Well let's all hope that because that stadium is so big and it is harder to get tickets to that it will be a little more secure. I Certainly understand political hatred and whatnot but I think bringing it into a sporting event is such a shame. I think Amer is handling it brilliantly.

El Legenda

they do it there because it will be news everywhere...wont get any news if they did it at a random street corner in Melbourne.

01-23-2009, 03:32 AM
Amer is fighting well and playing really well :D Hope he can take this run with him for the rest of the year and find some consistency :awww:

Amer is fighting well and playing really well :D Hope he can take this run with him for the rest of the year and find some consistency :awww:

He did well out there :yeah: He should be proud of his run here.

01-23-2009, 11:07 AM
:wavey: Just wanted to say congrats to Amer and his fans. He was great last night - and can't deny he gave me and the other Nole fans some really scary moments  When the match ended, at 5.00am European time - we were all thoroughly stressed and exhausted, - and I guess Amer should be proud of making us that way :) It was a very close match, and I wish him luck for the rest of the season.

Here are a few photos from the end of the match for you.

02-04-2009, 03:34 AM
amer took a WC into the dallas CH event this week and won his first round match tonight against Kuznetsov 6-2 7-6:yeah:

02-05-2009, 01:13 AM
and he beat Todd Widom in 3 sets and you can watch stuff at the event's site

02-06-2009, 01:38 AM
amer lost to evans in the qf 6-7 6-2 5-7, i saw from the middle of the 2nd set on on the stream and he was so great in the 2nd set and then just total :retard: for much of the third, he had a ton of chances, including 5-4* 0-30 in the third and played 4 terrible points then played a terrible game to drop serve. bah.

02-06-2009, 01:57 PM
the inconsistency factor
Nice blog entry btw.

02-08-2009, 03:24 AM
if I heard them right tonight on the Dallas stream, PMac called Amer up to hit with the Davis Cup team for the first round tie. I hope it's true, that'd be a great experience for Amer and well-deserved.

02-14-2009, 10:36 PM
Amer beat Korolev in the first round of Memphis qualies, 7-6 7-5:yeah:

02-15-2009, 10:36 AM
Great! If he wins 2nd match vs Guccione, he can face Ginepri/Reynolds/Stepanek or Spadea in R1 of main draw.

02-15-2009, 01:34 PM
Now that is a good win :yeah:

02-15-2009, 08:06 PM
blah 3-6 3-6 to guccione, thought he'd put up a better fight than that

02-15-2009, 08:50 PM
Double blah. I am hopeful that the AO was not a fluke though :scared:

03-23-2009, 05:04 PM

03-23-2009, 05:10 PM

03-23-2009, 05:22 PM
Koellerer retired. A win is a win especially for Amer who was out for a while with inury. Yay :D

03-24-2009, 06:32 PM
and he beat Odesnik in straights to make the main draw:banana:

03-24-2009, 10:13 PM
:D This is the only tennis player I wish I was single for and of course much younger, and of course not Jewish :haha:

03-24-2009, 10:33 PM
Sue :haha:

03-24-2009, 10:52 PM

I am just trying to get into a fantasy land at the moment. Life sucks for me in my little corner of the world :sobbing:

Anyhoo that's off topic. Good luck Amer :hearts: for the first round.

03-29-2009, 12:38 AM
I am so enjoying this match between 2 guys I love to watch play tennis. Even though their serving % this match is crap ;)

03-29-2009, 12:45 AM
Oh dear; he is looking tired out there. Many UE's.

03-29-2009, 12:57 AM
he's fighting :awww: just if only he were a little more consistent :awww:

03-29-2009, 12:59 AM
Yeah way to many UE's. Plus Cilic's groundstrokes and mental stability are too much for Amer. I like Marin as well but I always like the underdog :p. Besides to quote the wonderful Fee; Amer is lovely;)

03-29-2009, 01:01 AM
Cilic's mental stability? he blew the second set pretty bad....

but not the third, good effort amer  it's such a crime he's not in the top 100

03-29-2009, 01:04 AM
I probably would have enjoyed this match, but I needed to take a nap even more. Amer should be a top 100 player, but he's the only one who can get himself there.

03-29-2009, 01:06 AM
Cilic's mental stability? he blew the second set pretty bad....

but not the third, good effort amer  it's such a crime he's not in the top 100
I was kidding;) But I sort of meant he did not fold in the third after blowing the second. He lived up to his ranking IMO.
I probably would have enjoyed this match, but I needed to take a nap even more. Amer should be a top 100 player, but he's the only one who can get himself there.

04-07-2009, 07:50 AM
Amer played Houston qualies and he lost to Gustavo Lapentti in final round. :o
Hope he can get in as a LL

04-08-2009, 01:38 AM
well it looks like sam pulled out so amer got in and was up 7-6 and 4-2 in the 2nd set TB against capdeville and now....:help:

04-14-2009, 12:52 AM
Someone must post.

04-14-2009, 01:00 AM

04-14-2009, 01:02 AM
And those someone's are us this evening. Where is Amer btw? Next up for him? He does not keep his website up to date.

04-14-2009, 01:10 AM

I dunno, some challengers probably...

04-22-2009, 01:08 PM
Amer lost to Kevin Kim in the first round of the Tallahassee challenger in straights:o

04-24-2009, 05:48 PM
Too bad after such a good start to the year :(

04-29-2009, 12:14 AM
Beat Pim Pim 6-3 7-6 (5) in the first round of the Rhodes challenger. Nice to see Amer win even though it is really nice to see PimPim playing again.
And now he plays Dudi Sela. Oy vey;)

04-29-2009, 12:49 AM
At least he's playing multiple weeks. Good win. keep it up :yeah:

04-30-2009, 12:05 AM
But he lost to my other not as good looking fav:p

05-03-2009, 12:16 PM
Amer is in Munich trying to qualify to BMW Open Main draw.
He hasn`t faced a single break point in his first 2 matches.
R1 def. Matsukevich 6-4 7-5
R2 def. Oswald 7-6 7-5
R3 - vs Devvarman or Kloer.

05-03-2009, 04:44 PM
Good for him for trying :yeah: keep it up amer, please :awww:

05-04-2009, 10:25 AM
Surpisingly Devvarman lost to Kloer  so Amer is now playing this german guy and leading 3-2*

05-04-2009, 10:31 AM
What an awful draw for all qualifiers: Mathieu, Schuettler, Cilic or Berdych. Gonzalez retired and there is also his spot (vs Benneteau). But firstly Amer should win today :)

05-04-2009, 11:50 AM
How to change the thread`s title?

05-04-2009, 12:13 PM
Lost 7-6(0) in final set :o

05-04-2009, 03:01 PM
just go to edit the first post, then go to advanced, and you can change the thread title....

on his twitter, amer mentions going to rehab and how the clay can always get you, so I'm wondering if he got hurt during the match today :(

05-04-2009, 07:04 PM
Oh I hope he isn't injured again. No luck these Americans on clay. Firstly they hate it for the most part;) and secondly someone ( I am thinking Andy here) always seems to get hurt on it.

05-04-2009, 07:07 PM
and OMG personal belief here but Twitter is for the birds.

05-04-2009, 07:13 PM
Well they get hurt b/c they don't practice enough on it and the movements are different from what their joints are used to. But yeah hopefully he's not hurt or if he is, it's nothing serious.

Twitter is pretty cool, for certain things.

05-12-2009, 02:04 PM
Zagreb CH this week
R1: beat Hrbaty 7-5 6-4 :)

05-12-2009, 02:48 PM
:yeah: keep it up amer :D

05-15-2009, 05:37 PM
Is he in the main draw of the French Open?

Amer Delic profile (

05-15-2009, 06:31 PM
darkdesigns, no his ranking allows him to play only qualies :(
I see you are new here. Welcome ;)

05-20-2009, 03:02 PM
Amer is playing RG qualies this week.
R1 def Goodall 6-4 6-4
R2 playing Volandri right now, leading 7-5 4-1*

05-20-2009, 03:27 PM
he choked serving for the match :tape:

05-20-2009, 03:41 PM

I think Amer is getting a little stronger, mentally. After he lost the game serving for the match and went down 0-30 at 5-5, I pretty much expected him to lose. He's had such a hard time closing out matches during his pro career and I thought he'd fall apart again.

But he pulled it together and won the match. I think he's making progress. The main thing holding Amer back from being a top-50 player, imo, is mental toughness and I think he's slowly improving in that area.

yes, guess so :awww:

I have never been stabbed in my knee with a machette, but I am pretty sure it would feel like it does right know after my injection.

I can't believe he lost in the qualifying of Wimbledon! I've been rooting him on ever since the start of this year's Australian Open. I'll be cheering him on at the qualifying, though.

Go DELIC!!! :)
