Tough opening set, but he seemed to get into the match as it went along. He will need to up that first serve percentage though. 46% and 5 DF is not good enough. But still, well done. :)

I think Richard will have a great year, decent enough opening win against a decent player, will go deep in this tournement, hopefully he can win it

....or because he lost a set against the awesome Marc Gicquel

Still off the bandwagon it seems. Tsonga your man until Richie puts up a decent result?

First match of the season and losing the first set, truly unforgivable, If only he than went to break the opponent four times in the next two sets, perhaps it would look better :p

If you guys were there live this would have been a totally different post. Let me state this, Gasquet played like SHIT alright? Not only was he too defensive, nearly 70% of the times his forehands were short. Sure, he had some great backhand shots as usual, but other than the final game, he played all defense and nothing else. What he simply did was wait for the old Gicquel to break down and that was it. I saw Soderling too afterwards, honestly if it was Soderling playing him today, the match would have easily gone Soderling's way because Gasquet was CRAP.

Winning ugly is no bad thing for Richie.

Too often he doesn't win ugly when that's what's required.

Absolutely, he has to get his hands dirty. Pretty tennis (as nice it is to watch) doesn't always win matches! As long as he fights, wins and gets some self confidence then I'm happy! ;) Onwards and upwards for my man :)

The problem is that he's almost only been playing ugly for the last 2 years.......

no.
the problem is that Gasquet JUST SHOWS UP.
no real defense, no offensive play and gasquet wouldn't know aggressive if it hit him in the face.

Well done Richie

Amen to that :worship:
I think that last season if he had played such a scrappy first set and then lost it, he would have probably gone on to lose the whole match as his confidence was so low. The fact that he recovered so well and won the next 2 sets so comfortably is a positive in my book ;) He is unpredictable and it's something that his fans just have to put up with.

I think he should make the QF, Dent could be tough but Richie should win imo

Decent start... in the third set, he served at 36% and still won it 6-2, that's positive in my book, even if he needs to practice some serves before his next match.

he's not a player who wins from a set down too often so I guess it's a promising way to start the season in that regard
