it annoys me they have to play so early, too, but gulbis just must get his ranking up soon, because he hardly ever is a seed at tournas and he really has the game to be one...

Del Potro didn't get easy draws, especially in Slams but last year he managed to break the streak of the bad luck by his own good game, same will be with Gulbis, if not this week, then another.

But, seriously, he had numerous stupid defeats last season...if he'd done a little more in even some of the smaller events, he'd probably be ranked at least top 40 by now. Time for him to actually step up to the plate and live up to his hype...and this is an early opportunity to do something, given that Djokovic will also be starting cold. :shrug:

Because he easily won the two previous matches, with no obvious chances for the matches to go the other way, because you just know it or you just don't like him and that's that? :p

I find that the draw is usually rigged against Qualifer. The ATP always expects Qualifer to play 4 matches in the first round of these tournaments.

Think of how unfair that is for Qualifer. :sad:

He has to take control of his own destiny though, whether you think the fix is in or not. He has the talent to do it, but he has to deliver.

When he does, which he will, he will no longer have to worry about such a tough match up at the start of a tournament.

For the part about rigging a draw against him, I hope you were joking. What director with an ounce of sense would EVER kill off a guaranteed sell like Gulbis? The idea is to sell tickets. You want Gulbis around as long as possible.

Gulbis' mental capacity was on full display several times last season against Nadal and Djoker. No need to see it happen again in Brisbane. Something like 6-3, 6-2 is a foregone conclusion.
