2008's Best Challenger

The 2008 challenger season has had plenty of exciting and intense tournaments. As the season comes to an end, I would like to remember the best challenger of 2008 and vote on it. YOUR VOTES SHOULD BE BASED ON 3 CRITERIA.
1) THE PLAYERS Loaded field, talented, special players
2) QUALITY OF MATCHES Intense matches, close scores
3) GOOD HEAD-TO-HEADS Good mathups, highly anticipated matches.

Before voting however, you will have to nominate challenger tournaments from the 2008 season. I will take the 10 most common nominations. Thanks, I please nominate challenger tournaments!

In terms of cut-off, these are the best ones:

#110 - 12. Sunrise [Igor Kunitsyn]

#136 - 5. Wroclaw [Tomas Zib]
#149 - 14. Napoli [Daniel Gimeno-Traver]
#160 - 43. Buenos Aires [Pere Riba]

#162 - 42. Montevideo [Mariano Puerta]

#164 - 32. Segovia [Stefano Galvani]

#165 - 6. Bergamo [Fernando Vicente]
#171 - 13. Barletta [Mikhail Ledovskikh]

#172 - 4. Heilbronn [Frédéric Niemeyer]
#174 - 44. Cali [Olivier Patience]

Of course Sunrise is a very special case.

As I only attended São Paulo it was the best challenger for me, but it probably shouldn't be in the list.

From your number 3-8 ive hardly ever heard the winners. No good America challengers you saw?

Remember everyone, this is NOT a vote for how well your favorite player did, or I would vote for Yuba City and Kendrick and Spadea's victories.

As much as I wanted to say Athens, the field was average, with WC Verkerk winning, the venue was amazing, but it wasn't that exciting, and no one really cared after all the Greeks were out(R32)so there was no emotion really. I'd have to say Belgrade was great, followed by Bermuda.

Look out for Rhodes,Greece in 2009. beautiful island, beautiful courts. 125k+H all the surfaces for training.

Prostejov is easily one of the best challenger events around IMO, and the draw this year was outstanding:

Wrocław was the best in its history this year. Good players, good matches, dramatic comebacks, and finally a venue where is not that cold like in the previous one.

You sholud add the tournament draw when you pick one.

Prostejov looks better than some ATP like Casablanca.

you can see it at stevegtennis

http://stevegtennis.com/atpres.htm

this link will probably be updated in the next days with the 2009 draw, so if it happens, go to main page and look for 2008 calendar/results.

also you can check the draws here in MTF, the posts #2-4 form each thread have the draws/results of the tournament, great work by CooCooCachoo, with a nice design :yeah:

Wroclaw looks like its a lock for the poll. For heavens sake, the cut-off is 136! And some epic scores in there to.

Ozone
12-20-2008, 01:28 AM
I will compile the top 10 like this:
1) THE PLAYERS(30%): Cut-off
2) Quality of matches(25%): 3-setters+Tie-breakers
3) GOOD HEAD-TO-HEADS(30%): Same country match + # of seed vs. seed matches
4) Your Nominations(15%): 10 most requested tourneys
I will take the top 10 in all of these categorys THEN compile the official top 10.

To make things quicker, I'm ruling out all challengers lower than 50K.(I doubt they would make it anyways)

Clear US bias in the poll  Don't really understand why Lexington, Calabasas and Champaign even made the poll. The field wasn't all that good, and their websites don't stand out.

Scheveningen, enjoyable as it is, suffered from very bad weather this year.

My vote goes Other (Dallas), simply as a thank you for the awesome coverage there. The event seems a lot of fun too.

Me and CooCoo agree, Dallas was the best. Also, there is U.S. bias, some of their web sites did not even have live score . Also, none of these should be nominated if they did not have live stream.

It has to be Dallas; fantastic coverage through the live scores and the ultra high quality live video/commentary. Plus one of the organisers regularly made it onto 'britishtennis.net' to update us on any potential British interest, i.e really nice people running the event!

East London - South Africa - had a great field with Ljubicic, Koubek, T. Johansson, Gil, de Voest and the best hair in circuit Pavel Snobel, so gets my vote

Thanks for all of the nice things said about our Challenger(Dallas). We just finished our pre-qualy wc doubles tourney this weekend and our video streaming coverage has a few things to work out, but it was awesome. 3 hi def cameras, video replay of pts, live scoring. We will have it all this year. Guest commentary will also be something we will add to this years Challenger(coaches, players, teaching pros, etc...) You can view this weekends matches on www.frontrowtennis.com . Try and view the doubles final yesterday. Briaud/Marshall vs. Kenner/Scarella and let me know what you guys think.

btw, Patrick Briaud and Jason Marshall won our wc event beating Neil Kenner and Jeff Scarella in the finals, 6-2, 6-4

Yes, how can anyone nominate tournaments that don't even have a live score. Challengers that have live stream even further distance themselves from others.

A few facts about "Sunrise, CA"

- It's Sunrise, Florida not California.
- It's an ATP-organized challenger to bridge the gap from Indian Wells to Miami. No atmosphere, poor website, no live scores, nothing just big points for a challenger.
- The weather was poor this year forcing play into the next Monday.
