Which (ordered) top-4 do you predict in the end of 2009 ?

As we approach a season which, I think, might be even more exciting than this one ?:yippee:, and also maybe more opened with at least 4 very big players who will still be a good age,

I believe this topic may interest a lot of people.

I will collect your predictions and make statistics about that (probably I will give 4 points for number 1, 3 for number 2, etcaetera ... but I will also make statistics for how often every player is predicted as number 1, number 2, etc).

Of course, I expect Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Murray :worship: to be highly represented in these statistics, but other players are also allowed.

As for me, here is my prediction  :

1. Nadal : he's still young, he still improves (especially his serve) and has at least a great advantage for the rankings with the points he can earn on clay ... but the beginning of his season might be disturbed by his leg-problem and his game depends a lot on his physical ability.

2. Djokovic : one year younger, he had psychological problems in the second half of the season, having imagined he was too high too early. But I believe his victory in the Masters Cup will give him back the confidence and willingness he needs.

3. Murray : I was very impressed by the end of his season, but I still doubt his mentality and concentration can stay so good permanently (for instance his first rounds were very hard in the US Open), and I still think he is far behind the 3 best others on clay.

4. Federer : I have to say I'm a huge fan of his :hearts:, then of course I would be delighted if he is higher in the rankings, and, more importantly, if he often plays as well as he did in Madrid and the US Open, and if he wins some grand slams. I also think he is the best behind Nadal on clay (I will also look forward to Del Potro on this surface).
But ... he gets older (often players reach their high level at 25, like him in 2006, and for me he declines since 2007 ; this year, he will be the same age as Sampras in 1999 ... but with far better competitors, I believe). And also there are more players who like to play against him : Nadal, Murray, Simon especially ... who especially focus to his backhand and bring back a lot of shots to let him make a fault. Of course he can volley more but all of these players are also very good for passing-shots. Then ... anyway, the challenge is very hard for him. I hope at least he will win a grand slam, but it will be harder for the rankings, as I think it's harder for him to be regular all year now, especially in smaller tournaments like masters series.

That's my prediction (not my favorite one, which would be Federer Djokovic Murray Nadal), and what about yours ? :wavey:

1. Nadal
Under most circumstances Nadal would have been #1 since 2005. Even if he doesn't put in a performance as strong as his 2008 season, a season like 2005, 2006 or 2007 will probably be enough to hold on to the #1 ranking, given that no other player looks likely to dominate in the ridiculous way that Federer did during those years. Nadal has a huge advantage over the other contenders in that he is effectively unbeatable on clay. He "just" needs to clean up on clay and post solid results on other surfaces.

2. Murray
I've been very impressed with him in 2008. I believe that he'll be the best hard court player of 2009 and hardcourt is the most important surface (most points to win here), so sucking on clay won't hurt him too much.

3. Djokovic
Will be close behind Murray. I think he'll pull in another year like 2008, which is good, but not good enough.

4. Federer
Will probably continue to suck outside of the slams - and probably to an even greater degree than in 2008. In 2008 Federers best surface was clay, so his limited clay schedule will hurt him even more. He's still a force to be reckoned with in slams and will probably win a record-tying 14th slam at either Wimbledon or The US Open. However, I feel that his semifinal streak will end at the Australian Open.

Here's the results so far.

20 votes, as I excluded 4 votes with Jordan or Lammer, or Coria or Nishikori number 1.

Out of 20 votes,

if I give 4 points for the 1st one, 3 for the 2nd, 2 for the 3rd, and 1 for the 4th here's the results :

1. Nadal 64 points (from a maximum of 80)
2. Djokovic 44 points
3. Federer 39 points
4. Murray 33 points
5. Davydenko 9 points
6. Tsonga 6 points
7. Simon 2 points
8. Nalbandian and Del Potro 1 point

Nadal was predicted number 1 in 50% cases,
Federer 25% cases,
Djokovic 15%,
Murray and Davydenko 5%.

Only one vote out of 20 predicted Nadal worse than 3rd,
only 20% votes predicted him worse than 2nd.

50% of the votes predicted Djokovic in the first 2,
Federer 35%.

Given Nadals current structural advantage (being superior on clay, while everybody else fights for the hardcourt points) that makes perfect sense. Unless he gets injured, or some new clay court king emerges, it looks very unlikely that he would finish outside of the top 2.

2. Nadal
3. the one who was the best Hardcourt contender against the no.1
4. the one who was the 2nd best Hardcourt contender against the no.1

I have a feeling Djokovic will pick up more points the 2nd half of the season even if he doesn't defend his AO title. Federer probably will have a similar year as he did this year, only less early round losses. I don't think Murray will get close to the top 3. Someone like Tsonga or maybe Del Potro could make it to #4 or 5 if they stay injury free. But I'm not a psychic, so I'll more than likely be wrong.

1. Federer: I can't believe that he won't be n°1 again and I also think Nadal won't be physically able to keep his throne. I know it's a traditional thought during every end of the season but...
2. Nadal: for the former reason
3. Murray: he's getting more and more mature and will be more dangerous next year but I don't see him higher in the ranking for the moment
4. Djokovic: he won the AO and the beginning of his season was really good but he did not convinced me after RG neither his victory in Shanghaï.
