AAMI Classic - January 14-17 2009 - Kooyong, Melbourne, Australia.

just only Federer & Blake from Top10?

Players list (is it final?):

Roger Federer (SUI)
Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI)
James Blake (USA)
Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)
Marin Cilic (CRO)
Marat Safin (RUS)
Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)
Ernests Gulbis (LAT)

First time i see so "poor" list of players...

Tillström blast from the past, did well in GS events, but shocking injuries.

not quite as strong as past years>> still considering its an exho there`s enough exciting players to make it worth a look! ~also judging by history the AO champion will prob come from the Kooyong field (so FED to win)!!

wow that's some great attacking tennis going on here

looking forward to it especially with 3 of my faves playing there, but to be honest baghdatis should rather be taking care of his ranking than going there :o

Funny thing is Stephan only posted this thread because Nalbandian isn't playing. If Nalbandian had been in the field he would have started a thread like "AAMI Classic Kooyong 2009: greatest field ever?"

Stephan

Yes, for me the tournament where David Nalbandian does not play is a mug tournament http://imgsrv2.tennisuniverse.com/mtf/images/smilies/haha.gif

But if we would look on it more seriously, -
the Kooyong Classic previously always was as "mini" or "training" version
of Au Open! with highest level of players, ... it is seen in the winners list:

Past Winners

2008 Andy Roddick
2007 Andy Roddick
2006 Andy Roddick
2005 Roger Federer
2004 David Nalbandian
2003 Andre Agassi
2002 Pete Sampras
2001 Andre Agassi
2000 Andre Agassi
1999 Thomas Enqvist
1998 Mark Philippoussis
1997 Michael Chang
1996 Michael Chang
1995 Michael Chang
1994 No Tournament due to date change
1993 Thomas Muster
........

It used to correlate with the winner of the Oz open, but Roddick as usual had to fuck it up the trend like most things he does. It probably explains why he isn't playing there.

Actually it never correlated with the AO. Agassi was the only one to win both in the same year.

the standard of play is terrible. Federer d Stepanek 7-6 6-7 7-6 anyone?

if you take in to account that Andre Agassi did it three times,
we can say here yes "it was correlated with the AO":)

I actually like this field more than those of previous years. Mostly because it's got some really interesting players, and 3 that I've never seen live before in Cilic, Gulbis and Wawrinka. Personally I'm really looking forward to it, and even if there isn't many of the top 10 present, theres still some excellent players, so who cares.

And as people have pointed out, the whole point about Kooyong isn't to see fierce competitive tennis, but to see a more enjoyable game with the players personalities out to shine (anyone who's watched Roddick at Kooyong knows what I mean). It presents the players as more human and down to earth, and I find it a great event that makes me really excited about the Australian Open the following week. Kooyong rocks

we can say here no "it was not correlated with the AO":)

i don't think it's that bad. baghdatis is quite a crowd pleaser, so are safin, federer, blake or gonzalez. i don't get why they invited cilic though. they should've talked to haas-like guys before approaching suhc a no-name.

Kooyong is possibly one of the greatest tournament of all time. Lots of history and blood behind it. You should not diss it.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO

Tommy Robredo, Fernando Gonzalez, Juan Martin Del Potro, David Ferrer, Juan Monaco, Guillermo Garcia Lopez, Juan Ignatio Chela, Fernando Verdasco, Carlos Moya, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer.

may i ask just for interest why Federer is the last one in your fav list, after 11 (latin) players?

It's a cash grab. The results are meaningless. Just as Roddick.

I like the venue but 2009's field is a bit weaker than usual, and for some reason it always seems to be windy at Kooyong so the tennis is often a bit ropey.

But Nalbandian didn't fuck it up in 2004 though, right, a full 2 years before Roddick won the event?:retard:

Neither did Chang, Philipoussis, Enqvist. Yup only Roddick. That inconsiderate bastard!

I don't see any problem with being disappointed. Especially for people who plan on attending this event, exhibition or not, they want their money's worth.

It's not an awful lineup in any case.

HAHA yeah good question. Well I forgot to put Nadal and Federer on the list, so they just ended up at the bottom. The only name I've added since then is Monaco, and since he's one of my fave players I thought he deserved a space at the top. I can't help it if most of my faves are latin, but I couldn't leave Federer off the list.

shouldn't Federer be focusing on slams and stuff that matters? this coming year's schedule seems more busy than ever, or does he plan on eventually withrdawing from many of them? really strange.

The guy's 27. He should still be able to handle a full schedule.
