Mumbai terrorist attacks against Westerners

This does look bad.

I think the initial news reports are very understated and misleading.

Looks like a huge Al-Qaeda type attack against Westerners, potentially killing whole hotel populations.

What's your point? Western media initially reported this something like "Bomb blast kills 12 Indians in Mumbai". Nothing could be further from the truth, we'll find when it is over.

118 dead, with perhaps 500...many bodies feared cremated or hidden. Hindi intolerance of Christianity has surfaced since the election of this [...what's it's designation?: BJP...] However, the Christian Faith is old, there.] "Monkees on a stick" <--the derisive epithet.

^^ WTF does that news have to do with what happened today.

The Hindu extremists are "justifying" the massacre of Christians by accusing them of the killing of their leader, Swami Lakshamanananda Saraswati, on August 23, although responsibility for this has been claimed by the Maoists. Two days afterward, the worst anti-Christian violence in recent Indian history broke out, in 14 of the 30 districts in the state.
...this has been happening for some time...although the Maoists took credit for the assassination.

Christians are just carrying the brunt. An established minority...leftover hatred of the British, perhaps?

REPORT : Every day, 500 new immigrants from other Indian states enter Mumbai, the Indian economic capital, looking for work. They have recently fallen prey to a xenophobic party, the MNS, and been threatened and assaulted.

MUMBAI, India (AP) - A media report says a little-known group, the Deccan Mujahideen, has claimed responsibility for the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

The Press Trust of India news agency said Thursday the group sent emails to several media outlets.

Teams of heavily armed gunmen attacked a crowded train station in southern Mumbai and Leopold's restaurant, a well-known Mumbai landmark, along with the two hotels and a police station.

Officials say at least 78 people were killed and another 200 wounded. In addition, the attackers were holding hostages Thursday morning.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

MUMBAI, India (AP)—A top police official says gunmen are holding hostages at two luxury Mumbai hotels after opening fire on a crowded Mumbai train station, hotels and a restaurant popular with tourists.

So, let's see. If I make an observation on what a Thai said, I have to be politically correct and also make observations on what Bush, Hitler, Lenin, Mao, Stalin etc etc. said. What a load of nonsense. You have the same mindset as Nancy Pelosi who wants to pass a law forcing radio stations that broadcast right wing talkshows to broadcast equal time for left wing talk shows. Never mind that nobody listens to left wing talk radio and nobody would buy advertising time.

And I did not make fun of the Thais. I laughed at one Thai who was out in the streets disrupting the peace and demanding that the democratically elected government resign - to save democracy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe you should enlighten me on the identical Bush rhetoric.

Westerners in general, the president of the autonomic community of Madrid also got involved in the shooting

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/3531620/Carnage-in-Mumbai-How-the-terrorist-attacks-unfolded-Bombay-India.html

Another guest at the Oberoi, Esperanza Aguirre, the head of the Madrid regional government, was in the lobby when the shooting began.

"I first thought it was windows shattering, but the noise turned into machine-gun fire," she said. "We ducked behind the reception desk."

Moments later, the lobby of the Oberoi was ablaze, and a lucky few managed to escape through a side door, including Ms Aguirre. "I saw pools of blood, which I walked through with bare feet, but I didn't see any of the wounded or terrorists," she said.

I am not one to fuss over little things usually but I wish the title here would be changed to Mumbai attacks. The attacks were not just against Westerners. The total people killed and injured is in hundreds and they indiscrimately shot and killed people in the local railway terminus, airport etc. Most of the media is focusing( particularly in the US) is only focusing on the hotel siege but equally vicious attacks were carried out at other places too.

I don't know why the media is(was) reporting it as attack against Westerners

From the report Sunday Nov. 30

Eighteen foreigners, including five Americans, were killed in attacks on nine sites Wednesday through Saturday in India's commercial capital; at least 165 Indians died.

The best I heard was on Fox news. They said " 165 people died out of which 5 were Americans. We are still the # 1 target for terrorists across the world"

Off-topic: Africa has a few synagogues. (Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe...Algeria, Egypt...) certainly THOSE Rabbis must know a little about security, surrounded by Muslims...yet--the Synagogue in Mumbai was one of the places attacked.
LOL! Have you ever been to a place like Egypt? In one block there is a Church a Mosque and a Synagogue. They are all there in harmony. To even think that they will be afraid of the Muslims is hugely ignorant and racist.

As for how South Africa made the list of the 20 unsafe countries in the world is beyond me.

Pakistani civilians???
This is all BS.
Pakistan itself has been the worse victim of this BS.

Secondly India cant attack Pakistan. it knows if it attacks, sure Pakistan will reply and there will be an atomic war. and in result Pakistan might be finished but not Muslims but if India is finished, majority of hindus will be wiped out. Im sure they know it very well.

Garson007 said; With the way things are escalating, it won't be long before Islam is outlawed in many a country and earns cult status.

I said

last these damit idiot terrorists might be Muslims but only by name. Islam has nothing to do with it. Islam doesn't represent all the Muslims of today specially these.
I'm sorry if I offended, it was not my intentions. I was merely pointing out that countries like the USA will just become more and more racist against Arabians and end up outlawing the Islam religion, not because of the majority, but because of a few extremists.

nothing is worse than a religious fanatic, you simply cannot buy them off or try to convince them of changing their ways

I know a lot of muslims and most of them are really nice people, their culture is quite different from our own (even if we as spanish have some muslim/arab in our roots and blood), but if they are not the fanatic type, they can be unbelievably polite and respectful, very spiritual and nice :)

true MrsFedex and very well said mimi, I'm very ashamed to share the same name of the religion those inhumane collective of ignorance and bloodthirst claim to believe in and act upon, if Islam was indeed what they believe it is then I'm the first infidel of it, I can't help but feel so sad for those who fell victims in those horrible mass crimes of terror which opens not-so-closed scars of other hotspots of suffering in our world, it's easy to forget when you are so far away..

I think it was because early reports described how the terrorists were asking for people with British or American passports to identify themselves.
Most of the people killed were just caught in the wrong place, but it does seem that they particularly wanted Westerners on which to commit deliberate crimes.

The westerners were not the main target. The hotels where Westerners usually live were one of the targets. But the local railway station had nearly a 100 people killed and I can assure you that there was no Westerner there. This is not about Westerners. Its like me thinking that 9/11 was conducted to kill the Indians who worked in WTC. The media tries to find ways to make news more interesting for their country people. The problem is when people start believing it without considering all the facts. FYI 700 people have been killed in 2008 due to terror attacks in over six cities in India due to terrorist attacks.

This is not the first time that Indians were the target by Pakistani extremists. The attacks on India's parliament and India's embassy in Kabul are examples.I don't think that the westerners were the main target but more like a bonus to these monstrous people. There has been tension between India and Pakistan for quite a while, and Pakistani government has been under pressure to crack down on the terrorists that have been breading on their soil.

The Mumbai terrorists' want to destabilize Pakistan:

http://www.slate.com/id/2205795/

What is clear is that whoever planned the attack had an incisive understanding of how to destroy the limited progress that had been made to reduce Pakistani-Indian tensions and to undermine the new Pakistani civilian government's efforts to defeat the Islamist radicalism that is consuming the state. Shortly before the U.S. presidential election, I argued that there was a big opening for jihadists to make an enormous impact with an action that could be traced to Pakistan, thus inviting retaliation against that country. Political backlash against such retaliation might render the new civilian government incapable of cooperating with the United States against terror and would accelerate the fraying of Pakistan, where extremists often operate in the open.

The planners of the Mumbai slaughter obviously saw this opportunity. The bloodshed in India's financial hub was calculated to outrage not just Indians, who constituted the large majority of those murdered, but also, it appears, the key partners in what the jihadists call the Crusader Alliance To Destroy Islam—Americans, Britons, and Israelis.
