Qatar keen to have own players at ATP events

DOHA: Qatar is planning to improve its player base so that the local talent can take on the best on the ATP Tour. This was said by Nasser Al Kholaifi, the new President of Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF).

“Qatar’s immediate target is to have a strong player base so that we can have our own players taking part in ATP Tour events in future,” Al Kholaifi said yesterday.

Al Kholaifi was named the new QTF president by the Heir Apparent, H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for a four-year term beginning last week.

“From now on, we will reserve wildcards at all our international events for Qatari or Arab players so that our youngsters get a chance to learn and improve their game,” Al Kholaifi said.

“We feel that opportunities give experience and that is the way forward,” Al Kholaifi explained.

“I have told my colleagues about my new plan. They know the direction we are moving in. I want to see our own players taking centre-stage,” the QTF president said.

Karim Alami, the Tournament Director at all major international events - he is also an ex-ATP Tour player - echoed Al Kholaifi’s sentiments when he said: “I agree with Nasser. We must focus on homegrown players. If you get opportunities to play against the very best, it can do wonders for a young players.”

Alami explained: “When I started out at the age of 14, I was so nervous and scared taking on a higher ranked player on the ATP Tour. But once I started playing regularly, I became more confident about myself and my game. I improved and played the sport professionally for so long.”

Al Kholaifi said staging big events was just one of the aims of Qatar.

“It is great that we have so many international events, but that is not our sole aim. What we want to do is get Qatari youngsters competing against the best and for that to happen, we have to have a strategy, a plan. We are committed to achieving our target. We have to be patient as this kind of a project takes time to materialise,” he said.

“Before the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2009, I shall sit down with my staff and work on a scheme to involve youngsters to take interest in tennis.

“At the same time, we will help senior players in a manner that they can improve their game and go to the next level. This will help us in building a strong national team,” Al Kholaifi said. “We are willing to give wildcards to our own players so that they soak in the experience of top-level tennis. I don’t care if the players get thrashed 6-0, 6-0. That happens when you are trying out new schemes and plans,” he added.

“We shall have a ‘Kids Cup’ during the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. In this event, reserved for the kids, children will be representing national federations from across the region and the rest of the world. It will be a new event designed to help children enjoy the sense of competition,” the QTF president explained.

good choice since AO is on the same surface. Now players dont have the different surface excuse to not go there

yeah but they still got other excuses like double booking and forgetting to enter before the deadline. Faking injuries and so forth.

i love to see one day if they asked a top player why they didn't enter certain event saying "just couldn't be fucked".
