Monfils forgot to enter :tape:

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,24743167-10389,00.html

Brisbane loses Gael Monfils in tennis mix-up

PLANS by French entertainer Gael Monfils to play next month's Brisbane International are in tatters after a failure to meet the entry deadline.

Monfils, who might well have been the men's third seed in Brisbane, told organisers last month he wanted to start his Australian Open campaign at the January 4-11 tournament.

But Brisbane tournament director Steve Ayles was left exasperated when the flamboyant world No. 14, who has recently changed agents, missed an entry deadline.

Ayles has promised one main draw wildcard to crowd-pleasing Marcos Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up who has dropped to No. 99 in an injury-hit year, and Tennis Australia is committed to giving the remaining two to Australian men.

"As it stands, he won't be playing and it's something that Gael regrets and his new agent regrets," Ayles said last night.

"His current agent and his former agent are blaming each other and Gael would still very much like to play our tournament.

"One thing that could get him a wildcard would be if Marcos decides he needs to play matches and says he wouldn't mind playing qualifying, but that's unlikely."

Without Monfils, who is unlikely to resort to entering Brisbane qualifying himself and has not entered either of the other ATP events in that week, the Brisbane International still has five top-20 men.

Spain's Davis Cup winner Fernando Verdasco (16), Swede Robin Soderling (17) and Czech Tomas Berdych (20) were added to a field already known to have been headlined by Australian Open finalists Novak Djokovic (3) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (6).

There are also big names among the ranks of unseeded men with Baghdatis and Spain's former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero (55).

Gold Coast 16-year-old Bernard Tomic remained in contention for one of the two men's wildcards, Ayles said.

"There's one wildcard for the winner of a wildcard playoff (to be contested by eight men from December 31) and then we have to make a decision on people like Tomic - we feel Tomic at this stage is a possibility for a wildcard," he said.

Gold Coast runner-up Victoria Azarenka's entry completed a women's field boasting 10 of the top 30 women.

Top seed Ana Ivanovic (5) is one of the great drawcards in women's tennis, but the last Gold Coast event had eight top-20 women, although none ranked higher than No.12.

I wonder why the tournament organisers hadn't tried to contact Monfils before the deadline expired. They should have been worried seeing the deadline approaching fast without any signs of availability showed from him.

I saw an interview on Youtube with Bernard Tomic where the interviewer talks about there being a possibility he'll get a wildcard.Tomic said on the TA podcast a few weeks ago that he would like wild cards to Brisbane & AO main draw & that his performance at the TA training camp/AO wild card play-off would determine his fate. (He hadn't been promised either outright.)

There's also a Brisbane wild card play-off according to this interview: http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,24743167-10389,00.htmlGold Coast 16-year-old Bernard Tomic remained in contention for one of the two men's wildcards, Ayles said.

Tomic receives Brisbane wildcard

Bernard Tomic was today announced as the first Australian wildcard to join the men’s draw at the Brisbane International this January.

The Gold Coast teenager, who just won the second Australian Money Tournament at Melbourne Park last weekend, joins world No.3 Novak Djokovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando Verdasco in the men’s draw.

Brisbane International Tournament Director Steve Ayles said he is delighted have an Australian rising junior as part of the Brisbane International.

“Tomic shows a lot of promise and it will be fantastic for him to debut on the ATP tour in his home state at his home-town tournament.

“The Brisbane International will be a great learning curve for Tomic where he will be able to experience some top level tennis against some of the best players in the world.

“It will be great to see him step up in front of a home crowd where he will have some strong support.”

At the age of 15, Tomic won the Australian Open boys’ singles title and reached the semifinal of the boys’ singles at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals at the French Open in 2008.

He was selected for his first Davis Cup squad in September this year and is the first player in history to win the 12/u, 14/u, and 16/u Orange Bowl trophies in the world junior championships in Florida.

Having just made the transition to the men’s circuit, Tomic has played some lower tier Futures tournaments in Australia and just missed out on a quarterfinal birth at the Australian Open wildcard play-off, missing out to Colin Ebelthite who went on to become the overall winner.

I read that, I don't really understand it. There are three wilcards with Bagdatis getting one, Tomich another an then I thouht there was a wildcard play off for the third. I don't see how they can have one to give to Klein. Anyone know if there is a wildcard playoff which was meant to be strating today?

I think they must have scrapped it.3 womens WCs already handed out so probably theyre doing the same with the men. Theres not enough time now. I think its too many matches for everyone anyway if they have a playoff for everything, especially this time of year. Hope Gucci gets one for Sydney. He's defending so much. Aus definitely needs him to stay top 100. He has agood chance in Quallies for Brisbane.

Makes sense that he is granted entry to the tournament he did so well in last year, but a WC to the Brisbane main draw would have been more beneficial for him...it's not like Brisbane is full of mugs, but the Sydney draw is pretty heavy, leaving Gooch no place to hide when the main draw is made.

Chris Guccione misses out as wildcards go to Bernard Tomic and Brydan Klein

SPURNED Chris Guccione believes Tennis Australia bosses have embarked on a Davis Cup youth revolution - and he aims to prove them wrong with a strong run in qualifying rounds for the Brisbane International.

Guccione, the coachless Australian No.2, was bypassed for the last two Brisbane International men's wildcards, which went to 16-year-old Gold Coast prodigy Bernard Tomic and Perth 19-year-old Brydan Klein.

All four men from the most recent Australian Davis Cup team - Guccione, Peter Luczak, Robert Smeets and Carsten Ball - will start 2009 in qualifying at the Queensland Tennis Centre Saturday.

Women's qualifying starts Friday.

Guccione appeared Friday to genuinely want younger players to drive Australian tennis forward, rather than guard his own patch, with selections due soon for a Davis Cup qualifying tie away in Thailand next month.

"It seems like they are going with a youth policy - they have been saying they are going to do it for a while," Guccione, 23, said.

"I hope that some of these young blokes come through and play for Australia.

"If we get back more immediately to the world group (of the Davis Cup) that's good for everybody.

"I'm really disappointed (about the Brisbane wildcards).

I am the No. 2 in Australia, but I've had opportunities in the past and they need to give these young guys their opportunities."

Guccione said he hoped he would receive a TA main draw wildcard to Sydney's Medibank International, starting on Sunday week.

The big-serving left-hander would drop from a world No. 96 ranking to the 130s if he surrenders all ranking points he took in January last year by making the second round in Adelaide and the final in Sydney, where he beat Lleyton Hewitt and top-20 player Tomas Berdych.

An 18-year-old Guccione beat then world No. 4 Juan Carlos Ferrero at a Sydney International as a wildcard, an achievement which gives Klein, in particular, something to aspire to in his own ATP debut.

"It's what Australia wants to see, them proving themselves against a top player," Guccione said.

"I hit with Tomic a little in Chile. He's really solid at the back of the court and has a lot to learn, but he's one of the best 16-year-olds in the world.

"Brydan has had some good results which I hope he takes to the next level.

"It makes it a little tougher for me to have to play (three) extra matches, but if you can get through qualifying you have some matches under your belt."

Guccione is also looking for a new coach.

"I'd prefer an Aussie coach and get out there and sort myself out," he said.

Thanks Labamba. Seems like Guccione is being a good sport about it.

Guccione sounds like a good guy. Hope he makes it through the qualies.

its absolutely disgraceful that tommy haas and or monfils werent offered a mdwc and instead klein and tomic recieve them. a qwc was more then adequate for both of them and gooch or smeetsy could of recieved a mdwc along with either haas or monflis. instead we see them in doha and a real possibility that no aussie will make it past the 1st rnd md with such a tough qualies draw

Smeets and Gooch have been getting W/C's for 5 years. Sure hope Tomic and Klein arn't still relying on handouts as 23 year olds. Anyway Baghdatis got one for Brissy, Gooch and Monfils are very likely to get Sydney. Would you have all out W/C's go to internationals? Do you think the Brits or Americans would give THEIR w/c's away to Aussies...doubtful!!! :(

The organizers are trying to cash in on Gooch's popularity and his sex appeal to the ladies by giving him an extra three qualifying matches to try and bring some early exposure to the tournament before the main draw.
