Federer, Blake Compete With Idols

Growing up, Roger Federer and James Blake dreamed of playing tennis on the same court as BlackRock Tour of Champions stars John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. On a glittering night in Macao, their dream came true.

Spoils were shared evenly at the Cotai Strip CotaiArena on Thursday as all four competitors at the Venetian Tennis Showdown ended the night with victories against their names. Although Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg emerged victorious from their respective singles matches against James Blake and John McEnroe, the two men joined forces and were beaten in a single set doubles showdown.

In the first match of the evening Federer breezed past Blake 6-4, 6-4, exacting revenge on his Olympic conqueror before jetting home to Dubai to take a well deserved break ahead of the new season's start in January.

In the second singles match of the evening, Borg gained revenge over arch-rival McEnroe, winning their one-set clash 7-6 after the American had emerged victorious from all of their previous meetings this year on the BlackRock Tour of Champions.

It did not take McEnroe long to indulge in his familiar antics, expressing mock anger at a line call after just two points and later smashing his racket into the net.

Borg, 52, played some impressive passing shots against the 49-year-old McEnroe, who showed his trademark willingness to approach the net throughout. Borg’s tactics proved the more fruitful though and the Swede was able to overpower his opponent 7-2 in a deciding tie-break.

Federer then teamed up with Borg to play against McEnroe and Blake in a match that featured four players who have won 31 Grand Slam titles between them. The American duo won through 10-7 in a single Champions' Tie-Break.
