5 best players on each surface this year

I was so bored I actually went on tennis talk. I saw this thread on there and thought it was a good idea.

Clay:

1. Nadal by a lot
2. Federer
3. Djokovic
4. Ferrer
5. Almagro

Grass:
1. Nadal  thanks to Federer's shit play at Wimbledon final
2. Federer
3. I'll say Murray because Safin and Schuettler only got to the semis because of lucky draws. Yes, he beat Djokovic but we all know how Djokovic was playing then. Plus I like Murray.
4. Safin
5. Djokovic

Hardcourt:
1. Djokovic
2. Murray
3. Federer
4. Nadal
5. Del Potro/Simon

You obviously like Murray so much.
Murray besting Nole on Fed on hardcourt?

? Murray pretty much outperformed everyone on hardcourt in the second half of the season. 2 ms, grand slam final and beat the top 3 on hard courts. Not to mention that he beat both hardcourt slam winners this year twice on hard courts. I bumped him up on grass because he beat better grass court players than Safin and Schuettler.

Yep, expect there's two guys who actually have a HC slam title and semi in the other one, but hey, how does that compare to a final and masters ;) His grass ranking is not bad either all things considered :p

OK, you're right, Djokovic should be first. However Fed didn't win a single MS title so I'm not putting him second.

Of course it's countable more or less.

By points gathered on each surface:

CLAY

1. Nadal
2. Federer
3. Djokovic
4. Almagro
5. Davydenko

HARD

1. Nadal
2. Djokovic
3. Federer
4. Murray
5. Roddick

GRASS

1. Nadal
2. Federer
3. Schuettler (!)
4. Safin
5. Ancic

INDOORS (hard and carpet)

1. Murray
2. Tsonga
3. Djokovic
4. Simon
5. Soderling

These are only points. I am not saying that Schuettler is better than Ancic on grass. But in 2008 it was like that and should give some insight, the end.

Did Nadal played like 10+ MM hardcourt tournaments?
He did not win nor made the finals of AO, US, TMC, Indian Wells and Miami- The five biggest hardcourt events.

Montego

All tournaments in which players have played were counted. Not only those which were included in the official rankings.

Nadal had:

2200 from GS + TMS + 120 Chennai + 75 Dubai + 400 Olympics = 2795

Fed had:

1880 from GS + TMS + 100 Olympics = 1980

Djokovic had:

2430 from GS + TMS + 135 Dubai + 205 Olympics = 2770

Murray had:

1510 from GS + TMS + 250 Doha + 75 Dubai + 5 Olympics = 1840

Nadal had two GS semis + Olympics + win, final and two semifinals of TMS. Quite respectable

I counted TMC as an indoor tournament, not hard. I got rankings only for hard and indoors, not for indoor hard.

edit:

and Nadal was in finals of Miami (lost to Davydenko). He won Toronto and was in semis in IW and Cincy. Indian Wells and Miami may be the biggest hardcourt tourneys, but in terms of points they are the same as Cincy or Toronto.

With that Criteria, jelena Jankovic would top even the mens field.

Yes, but this was only the measure of points gathered in the tournaments in 2008. So - at least theoretically - Nadal was the best hardcourter. But sports doesn't equal theory and imo the best hardcourter was Djokovic then Federer and then Nadal.

These were only the numbers and not my point of view. And numbers said that Nadal gathered the most points from hardcourt tourneys in 2008.

Why ?

Top5 played only:

3 hard court optionals (Nadal, Roddick, Murray)
2 (Djokovic)
1 (Federer)

So not that much. And only Roddick played two MM (LA and Washington) and Rafa Chennai. The other were Olympics, Doha and Dubai, so quite big tourneys.

I think we have to diverge two things, a 5-set game, or a 3-set game.

IMO, Federer will beat Nadal, Djo, Murray in a 5-Setter on a Hard court. 3-Setter, I don't believe Djo is better than Murray - Yes he won the TMC (but he didn't play any star players and AO was a long time ago).

Ultimately I believe the top spot is between Murray and Federer, and well, Federer has not played well (TMS), or played brilliantly (USO). Same goes for Murray.

Nadal is undisputed on Clay. Federer undisputed #2 on clay in all formats.

Grass is a complicated one. Clearly there is a huge difference between Nadal, Fed at the top and the rest. It's debatable as to who is better, the Wimbly final was very close and luck was a big factor.

It's the 5 best players on each surface this year, dude. It is pure denial to call Federer the best on grass this year. You cannot take into the account the last 3 years when determining the best player on grass this year.
