Three new participants ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gaël Monfils and Robin Haase will participate in the 36th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, which will be held from 9-15 February 2009 in Ahoy Rotterdam. After Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray these are the next players that have been contracted. Tournament director Richard Krajicek about having contracted Tsonga: "Tsonga is a very charismatic player, who did not only have a great start of the year with a final at the Australian Open, but who, with his win in the TMS Paris, also proved to be a strong indoor player". The 23-year-old Tsonga entered the Top 10 due to his good results in 2008.

The current number 14 of the world, Gaël Monfils, also confirmed his participation in Rotterdam.

The first wild card will be awarded to Robin Haase. Richard Krajicek: "It is known that Robin is currently working hard on his recovery to make his return on the ATP World Tour soon. A fit Haase should not be missing in Rotterdam, especially because he has shown last year that he brings added value to our tournament". Robin Haase surprised last edition by beating Andy Murray in the first round, 7-5 6-3.

Novak Djokovic has let us know that he will not be coming to Rotterdam.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gaël Monfils en Robin Haase nemen deel aan het 36e ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, dat van 9 tot en met 15 februari 2009 gehouden wordt in Ahoy Rotterdam. Na Rafael Nadal en Andy Murray zijn dit de volgende spelers die zijn vastgelegd.
Toernooidirecteur Richard Krajicek over het contracteren van Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: “Tsonga is een zeer charismatische speler, die niet alleen een uitstekende start van het jaar kende met een finaleplaats in de Australian Open, maar met zijn winst in de Masters Series in Parijs tevens bewees een sterke indoorspeler te zijn.”
De 23-jarige Jo-Wilfried Tsonga kwam door zijn goede resultaten in 2008 de top-tien van de wereld binnen.
De huidige nummer 14 van de wereld, Gaël Monfils, heeft eveneens zijn deelname in Rotterdam bevestigd.
De eerste wildcard in Rotterdam zal worden toegekend aan Robin Haase. Richard Krajicek: “Het is bekend dat Robin op dit moment hard aan zijn herstel werkt om binnenkort zijn rentree op de ATP World Tour te kunnen maken. Een fitte Haase mag wat mij betreft niet ontbreken in Rotterdam, zeker omdat hij afgelopen jaar heeft laten zien een meerwaarde voor ons toernooi te zijn.” Robin Haase zorgde in de afgelopen editie voor een verrassing door Andy Murray met 7-5, 6-3 in de eerste ronde te verslaan.

Pretty disappointing, no Fed, no Djokovic. Seems the upgrade of the 500-series doesn't really have the desired effect for the tournament. Might aslo be a result of the new spot on the calendar, just a week between Rotterdam and the Australian Open, it's not ideal.

Well from next year it will be ranking breakdawn. 4 GS, 8 out of 9 best 1000,4 best 500 (1 after us open), and 2 best 250 .

Interesting news in my opinion, looks like an excellent entry list at the minute despite Djokovic's withdrawal.
