Not happy with the calender. It doesn't look any better than this year. The clay/grass season is too compressed with big events, then there are week and weeks after W with little in them, and 3 weeks between Shanghai 1000 and Paris 1000.

My thoughts exactly. And as a coincidence  they are also the European tournements  F*ck the predominant HC and American/Asian tournements

No South American clay this year either

Doha? Why is Rafa going to Doha, it sucks  Bad weather, windy and sandy sometimes it's pretty cold at that time of the year. Nobody is interested in tennis in Doha besides the organizers and the ministry of tourism.

The Artois Championships is now called AEGON Championships. AEGON took over from Artois as main sponsor.

What is this exho in Abu Dhabi?

Probably because he is playing in the new IMG exho in Abu Dhabi from 1-3 January. Most of the top players are going $$$$$$$$$$

I hope he skips Queens this year - and Barcelona. Looking at the calendar, it makes sense.

I expect he'll play both. If he plays next year at all.

RE skipping Queens - would it be wise to go into Wimbledon without having any matches on grass??

Is the injury that bad?

I, too, think he should play Queens just for match practice but he should skip Barcelona - hard tournament with a draw like an AMS, doesn't really need it.

I think he should play it.

Man, looking at this calender I'm unsettled concerning his #1 position in 2009. The guy won too many things this year; how will he ever be able to defend RG/Wimbledon? He's no Borg (3 times in a row, RG/Wimbly, wtf?) yet.

I don't care about any of Rafa's optionals except for Doha (because it's before AO) and Queens (because it's before Wimbers).

Okay, so he should probably do something productive in February (like play Dubai), but who cares about Rotterdam? If he's that hard up for ATP points he can play other MM tournaments in July or after the USO.

It's a shame about Queens finding a new sponsor, though. Stella is my favorite beer and Queens is my favorite MM--it was a match made in heaven. :p

BD from next year the top players have to play 4 "500" tournaments, one must be after USO.

Dubai is a 500. So is Barcelona. I think Rotterdam is.

Holy hell. The ATP is trying to kill them, aren't they?

Let's see if I have this. they have to play

9 1000 events
4 grand slams
5 500 events

And these are the ones that are required???????

Ridiculous.

8 "1000"s - Monte Carlo isn't mandatory.

and 4 "500"s, I think. Maybe it is 5.

They all play more tournaments than that anyway, but Rafa doesn't bother with optionals after USO (hasn't for the past 2 seasons anyway) and now he'll have to play one.

I don't understand why there is no grass 500. That sucks.

True. Queens is a lovely tournament with history, prestige, and some superb 'pre-wimbledon' ambience if anyone who matters in these decisions were sit up and notice.

What an intimate center-court!

Sydney hopes to lure Nadal
20/11/2008 3:57 PM

Sportal

Medibank International Sydney tournament director Craig Watson is still hopeful that star Spaniard Rafael Nadal will play at next year's event.

Nadal, who is currently receiving treatment to a knee complaint, is yet to map out his schedule for 2009, but Watson has a spot for him at the Medibank International should the World No.1 decide to play.

"He has played here before and we know he likes the venue and the city," Watson said of Nadal.

"His management has not ruled it out and we know the people of Sydney would welcome him with open arms. Until they outline their plans we are going to keep asking."

Watson is also chasing in-form Scottish youngster Andy Murray for the tournament that will run from January 11-17 at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre and will provide players with valuable practice ahead of the Australian Open in Melbourne later that month.

"Murray is one of the form players in the world. He has stepped it up a notch this year and he has a terrific all round game," Watson said.

"On his day he is the equal of any. He would be a terrific addition to our field."

With Australian No.1 Lleyton Hewitt already committed to the event, Watson knows that the inclusion of Nadal and Murray would give the tournament a world class line-up.

"We have a terrific men's field with the likes of Hewitt, (Jo-Wilfried) Tsonga, (David) Nalbandian, (Tommy) Robredo and Co, but Nadal and Murray would bolster any field in the world," Watson said.

"We may be an outside chance, but as long as we are a chance I am going after them

I guess there is some kind of mistake. Rafa cannot miss Shanghai because it is a mandatory event. Moreover it is not on that fast surface (surely slower than Madrid) and it would be played outdoors. China will always be a special place for Rafa since he won the Olympics in Beijing.

Nadal to play in Thailand

Eurosport - Thu, 30 Apr 14:01:00 2009

Spanish world number one Rafael Nadal will make his debut at the Thailand Open in September.

The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand said the six-times Grand Slam Champion would be joined by reigning tournament champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

"I am very pleased to finally be able to come and compete at the PTT Thailand Open. I look forward to playing some great tennis for all the Thai fans," Nadal said.

LTAT president Suwat Lipatapanlop said he hoped Nadal's fame would help bring attention to the Thai competition and boost the country's ailing economy.

"I hope that hosting a tennis tournament with a superstar will bring confidence to both fans and investors," Suwat said.

The Thailand Open will be held from September 26 until October 4 in the suburbs of Bangkok.

Remaining players for the 32-player draw will be announced in the next couple of months.
