Abu Dhabi plans New Year's Day party

Confirming their entries for this elite pre-season tournament yesterday were world number one Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer (No. 2), Andy Murray (No. 4), Nikolay Davydenko (No. 5), Andy Roddick (No. 6) and James Blake (No. 10).

The January 1-3 tournament will be held at the 5,000-seater Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex at Zayed Sports City.

Former world number one Federer said in a statement: "I am really looking forward to playing in Abu Dhabi. The player field is very strong and the location is beautiful.

"It is always exciting to play in new facilities and I am sure Abu Dhabi will be up there with the best of them. We all hope that this event will return year after year and set the standard for tennis lovers in the region."

Greg Sproule, managing director of International Management Group (IMG), announced the event together with John Lickrish, managing director of Abu Dhabi events company Flash, and Mirna Hijazi, director of marketing and communications at real estate developers Capitala.

Sproule stated that the Capitala World Tennis Championship - the first international tennis tournament to be held in the UAE capital - will see Nadal and company play a series of matches with the winner picking up $250,000.

"Tennis is growing from strength to strength and the forthcoming event is the beginning of a tennis legacy in Abu Dhabi," he said.

The event aims to raise awareness of the benefits of tennis and the importance of an active healthy lifestyle, whilst also leaving a legacy for the community beyond the tournament.

"We hope to see more people in the UAE play this beautiful game after watching these top players in action," stated Lickrish.

In the weeks leading up to the event the organisers will be holding a series of tennis themed activities in and around the capital, engaging all ages and nationalities.

This will include the 'Community Cup', a community tournament, where winners will compete to have the exclusive chance to meet their favourite players.

“I really enjoyed the game, it’s completely different playing an exhibition to a Grand Slam, you can really have some fun with it.

In terms of playing Nadal tomorrow, I know that he’ll play 100%. He always runs, tries to make no mistakes at all, and he’s also had a break and time to rest since his injury. Outdoor he plays much better, indoor I think I might have a better chance with him, the ball always bounds perfectly indoors and there’s no wind.

It’s a very fast surface out there, and that suits how he plays, from the baseline. I know that that I want to win tomorrow, and I want to win the final.”

“The pace was faster than usual down on the court, it’s a fast surface. I really enjoyed playing with the ball kids and having some fun out there.

It’s really disappointing to go out so quickly as I would have loved to played more games, but I’ll be staying for the rest of the tournament and running some clinics, and the way I see it, I get to have some of the best level practice whilst I’m here too. I’m also playing in Qatar next week.

This year I want to try to play bigger – not get stuck in rally mode. I’ve worked really hard in my off season, I’m in great physical shape, and I’m looking forward to playing better at some of the bigger events.

I’m impressed with the facilities here, and I find that every time we come to the Middle East the standards are first class. We’re getting really spoiled whilst we’re here, and it’s always a pleasure to visit.”

“The tournament was great preparation for me: it gets me back in form, as none of us has played a match for a while, and I also got to play against a top player which showed my weaknesses. Now I have time before the Australian Open to address those weaknesses with my coach, so I see today’s match as a positive learning experience. There isn’t as much pressure as there is at a Grand Slam, but I still wanted to win.

Andy Murray has definitely earned his spot in the top ten – he’s at the top of his game and one of the best in the world. He has great talent, defends well, and is mentally very strong. His first serve has improved a lot and his game is very good.

He played great today, served really well and put pressure on me. I didn’t serve my best. I have time to work on that before the Australian Open and hopefully I’ll play Andy again in Melbourne.

I consider myself a contender as a winner for one of the Grand Slams - I have the ability and have beaten every one of the top players. I probably have two or three years left to try to do that.”

“I have played James once before, and it was a really great experience for me to play against him today for the second time.

I am looking forward to playing with Federer tomorrow and it’s a great way to prepare for the other championships in the future. This match won’t be as big as the Grand Slams but Federer is always giving his 100% performance no matter which tournament we’re playing in.

I practiced so well last season and had a good year and I’m expecting this year to be as good or even better than the last. I would love to be World Number one but my biggest goal is to win the grand slams, and I think my best chance for winning a Grand Slam this year will be during the Australian Open.

“I love Abu Dhabi and regularly train here in the off-season. The weather is beautiful and the atmosphere here today was fantastic. We’re getting really looked after whilst we’re here – Emirates Palace is the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in!”

Abu Dhabi: Tennis fans in the UAE will once again get to start the New Year watching some exciting action at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex with the world's top two, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, confirming their return to the Capitala World Tennis Championship.

Federer and Nadal, along with world No 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, world No 8 Nikolay Davydenko, world No 9 Fernando Verdasco and world No 11 Robin Soderling will battle it out for the winner-takes-all $250,000 (Dh918,342) in the three-day event which starts on December 31 and ends on January 2.

Addressing a press conference here yesterday, John Lickrish, Managing Director of Flash Entertainment, the event managers, said: "Six of the world's top 11 players will be seen in action. This year, we will also have a third-place match as per the request of the players."

Andy Murray, who won a marathon final against then world No 1 Nadal to win the inaugural Capitala event, has decided to skip this event. Organisers said the British No 1 was concentrating on the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, and had decided to go straight there without coming to the region.

This is not really the off-season, it's the last week before the first ATP-week. So nothing more than some training and match practice for lots of money. They can go on holiday for three weeks from next week.

Who wins, Sodie or Wawrinka? Who wins, Davy or Tsonga? I think the SF are Rogie vs. Sodie and Rafa vs. Davy and the F is Rogie vs. Davy and Rogie gets revenge from the WTF SF loss last month. I don't see Rafa being able to beat Davy on the hard courts. I don't see Rogie losing to any of these guys. Sodie he owns, Wawrinka he basically owns, Davy he mostly owns, Tsonga he'd want revenge on, and I don't see Rafa beating him any time soon, other than maybe on clay.

01-01-2010, 12:17 PM
I missed the first two sets and it was 3-2 Sodie in the 3rd set, but Sodie did beat Rogie 6-7 7-6 6-2. Although I don't think it means too much, it wasn't a match that counted. A few years ago Roddick beat Rogie in Kooyong in 3 sets and Roddick is 2-19 against Rogie. Rogie will play the Rafa/Ferrer loser for 3rd place (that loser of course takes 4th place). So what do you want, a Sodie vs. Rafa rematch or a Sodie vs. Ferrer matchup?
