Gilles can't play in Brisbane (05/01), he's signed up for the mix-teams Hopman Cup in Perth (03-09/01) alongside Alize Cornet.

If he plays in Shanghai and needs more time then during the off-season, it shouldn't be a problem to find a substitute in Hopman Cup (that's how France ended up playing with Jérôme Haehnel 2 years ago).

I have no idea which events he's going to play, Felipe. The only one we know so far is the Hopman Cup indeed, but it was decided months ago when his situation was completely different. I'm not sure anymore he should play it.

Hopman Cup is useless, it doesn't give any point... But the good thing is that he's sure to play at least 3 matches and since we know he needs a lot of matches to play well, that's not a bad preparation for the Australian Open.
But I would prefer him to play a small tournament and win it so he would take smoe points !

I wonder if he will ? I've got the idea in my head that I might visit Bucharest this September :) I've looked at apartments and flights... anyone ever been there? Is it the sort of place that a feisty Scotswoman with no language other than english could go by herself? (I've been abroad before by myself and I'm not easily scared lol;))
Or does anyone here fancy sharing an apartment and stalking Gillou for a week?:devil::devil:

Considering his ranking, he doesn't have many points at all to defend until after Wimbledon, so he could easily move up even further in the rankings. Especially against Tsonga, who is going to have a lot of trouble defending his Australian Open final, I think.

Yavor, use the tennis tournament as an independent sociology project, study the crowd, their reactions and how they are manipulated by tournament directors, media, etc. or how sports figures provide society with an outlet for our repressed animal instincts, or maybe how the culture of tennis mirrors the changes in class systems throughout the world ??? then you can stalk Gilles all week and have your professors thinking you're a smarty to boot!

Either players will take it more seriously this year because they now get ATP points for it - and then it means he will play an event the week before RG although he's been saying everywhere he won't do this anymore this year.
Or they still won't care and it remains of those pointless exhibition events, why not rather practice on the RG courts?

I find it a strange decision, but well, it's one of the few tennis events with TV coverage here, so it's fine for me if he plays there!

krn81
03-16-2009, 06:35 PM
Surprising, he said in an interview last week that he will not played any tournaments before the masters 1000 and slam tournaments. It looks he changes his mind or it is just for fun with jo.

Is someone know how does this tournaments works? country against country?

Truc
03-16-2009, 07:16 PM
Maybe it will be different now with the ATP points, but only the Chileans and the Germans used to take it seriously, the others couldn't care less.

There are two groups of 4 countries playing against each other. 2 singles and one doubles in each match. The countries have more than 2 players so they don't need to play everyday.
Then the best countries play the final (maybe there are semi-finals too, I don't remember), but since the final takes place during the week-end and RG starts on Sunday already, the top players don't try tooooo hard to qualify for it.

I guess you get DSF in Austria too, so imagine the usual DSF hopeless commentary and non-stop commercials in top of that... A highlight of the tennis season.

krn81

Even though it was a bad Miami tennis day today - I do have some hope for excitement this week. On the Indy Tennis website it was mentioned that they're going to announce on Thursday a player who's returning to the tournament to play this year. I'm really, really hoping it's Gillou. Returning could mean a lot of things - returning after winning the title last year (Gilles!!!) or returning after not having played for a few years (someone else I don't care nearly as much about). I hope it's not that they're making a big deal about Taylor Dent or someone like that returning.

Alli I think is Andy (Rod) because he had already decided to play at Indy this year.....

Hey there Yavor. :wavey: You're right, Roddick is returning to the tournament this year. They already made a big deal about that on the website a month or so ago. This has to be someone new (unless their operations director is completely clueless...). They're trying to create a buzz with it by telling people in advance that they'll announce it when daily tickets go on sale on Thursday.

He answered to you Fran about choice to play in Queens ;)
http://www.welovetennis.fr/gilles-simon/11621-simon-l-herbe-est-une-bonne-surface-pour-moi

"Le tournoi du Queen's est un très beau tournoi, historique qui plus est. Tout le monde veut jouer au Queen's un jour. L'herbe est une bonne surface pour mon jeu, et j'attends cette partie de la saison avec impatience. Mon jeu se décline bien sur herbe. Certains des meilleurs joueurs du monde seront présents, mais je veux gagner le tournoi !"

He wants to play at least one time in his life in Queens. Maybe next year he will come back to play grass in Germany.
But is he good on grass? I was not expecting him good on that surface specially with not a huge service...

Truc
05-07-2009, 03:33 PM
"Not a huge serve" and no netgame, his match against Richard last year was painful!

TBH, I'm always surprised when the guys choose to play in Halle because the courts there are dreadful after 2 days whereas they still look beautiful in London even for the final. It isn't a big issue for Gilles since he has never won a match in Halle :p, but I'm sure London is a better choice if he wants to have a decent grass season this year.

Last year he played Warsaw on clay during the week of Halle-Queen's.

Really? I thought it was Bastad the players love so much. But maybe Halle too. I don't doubt the organization is nice, it's in Germany.

The only thing that comes to mind is that he perhaps thinks that entry list on clay tournaments after wimbly are likely to be weak and hence, it will be easier for him to gather points there. Or is he overtly frustrated by his clay season and want to give it another shot?

I figured he would have either been fed up with clay and transitioned to the hardcourt season after Wimbledon and played Indy - or to follow up with a few clay tourneys and then transition for the Masters Series 1000 hardcourt events. If he is actually going to play Indy after Stuttgart, switching surfaces so rapidly seems like an odd choice. The grass to clay isn't an issue but the clay to hardcourt is another story.

true.... :tape:

If he doesn't play Indy it actually takes some pressure off of me. Since it's a small tournament, I'm sure there would have been ample opportunity to talk to him. And, of course, because I'm willing to embarrass myself, I would have planned to talk to him. In fact, if given the opportunity I would force myself to talk to him in French. I'm a 'do it right and do it big' person, so that would be the ultimate way for me to force myself to get over my fear of speaking French with French-speaking people

I know, I thought of you when I saw that Stan was playing the European clay events too... At least Stan could have made an effort and joined Roddick, Karlovic, Querrey and Isner in Indianapolis to practice his return of serve a little bit!

So he plays 5 weeks in a roll (if he manages to go to 2nd wk of USO). Sounds to me like he isn't too confident about the 2 TMS . Maybe if he goes deep in Montreal and Cincy, he will pull out NH? finger crossed (that he goes deep in TMS).

I think that's fair enough, says a lot about him and his confidence but maybe he prefers a busy schedule to scrabbling around for a wild card a few days before a tourney starts.

Have a great time there in Indy, Alli.

I don't even know who's playing there. I went to Indy's website and clicked on the "player" tab, and they only listed the 4 Americans , and I don't like them all. ok, admittedly I didn't take the time to scroll down until now, I'm use to seeing all the players show up immediately on the players page :p

Karlovic withdrew, Alli. :(

I didn't know you will spend the whole week there, including the qualies! It's a bit of a waste, I'll be in Hamburg just 2 days maybe.
I know I said I don't mind making a fool of myself with other players, but not to the point of giving them a hug, sorry. It probably doesn't show much on message boards, but I'm very, very shy in real life.

You can find the entry list of Indianapolis here, Lala:

Merci, toi aussi!

I really don't have anything to ask right now about Gilles, we get so many updates in the media, about his schedule, his knee... I kept seeing Tulasne everywhere in Madrid, he was even sitting next to me while I was watching PHM-Fognini (since the winner would be the next opponent of Gilles), but I couldn't think of anything interesting to ask. People sometimes ask on the French blog if Gilles is going to have a website one day, that's the only thing which comes to my mind right now...

I'm off to Indy tomorrow! If anyone has any special requests, let me know :D
Yes I have a special one :D Can you see if they have any footage of Mandlikova's matches over there; I think she played there a few times when Indiana was a Virginia Slim tournament between 1981 and 1986 roughly. ^_^

Have a nice trip lucky you! :wavey:

He hasn't entered Metz, I don't know if he will defend his title in Bucharest or take some time off before the Asian tourney.

There is some tractations to make him come in Metz according Republicain Lorrain http://www.republicain-lorrain.fr/fr/sport/article/1873578,81/Gasquet-et-Ljubicic-reviennent-aux-Arenes.html

But maybe he has entered Bucharest or will do like Jo.

Oh sorry, I thought it already was the entry list when I saw your post in the tournament sub, soulage. But I just saw the official entry lists in another forum and he really hasn't entered Metz - he hasn't entered Bucharest either.

(So you see Jo also gets his fair share of digs in the French media, Puschkin?
It's quite stupid here since he's the only Frenchie who doesn't need to play more 250 events. And the entry list is OK without him, it's fine if he prefers to focus on the Asian tour.)

I think there is discussion about given him a WC when they say "tractations en cours". The article has been written today so after the deadline.

I think Gilles shouln't play Metz and focus on more important event and if he plays in DC he will be a bit tired nervously.

Exactly. Not to mention that the different surface alone would be enought to explain his choice.

Is he playing Davis Cup for sure? when do they decide on who got picked to play the tie?

Considering his schedule of the US hard court, he plays continuously from now til end of US Open, and hopefully that includes 2nd week of USO, and then Davis Cup if he's picked. The week of Sept 21-27 should be a rest week for him really, doesn't make sense to play Bucharest/Metz unless his USO is shorten somehow (touch wood that won't be the case). Besides, the 3 weeks Asian swing is very important since he needs to get a good feel to get himself ready for Shanghai to defend 700 pts. Make more sense if he gets to Asia early to prepare for that.
