He'll go. He can't really afford to have another zero-pointer in his ranking total.

How much he is bothered and how hard he is prepared to try is another matter. . . He is also down to play doubles with Jamie Delgado! Now if I thought he was going to give his all to all the matches, that would really bother me!

Unless of course he can convince the doctors that the knee is too much of a problem to play.

i think he should be ok.. dont forget he had a long break since US Open and this week hasnt been too stressful on him

Murray maintains magical form with comfortable win over Troicki

• No1 seed cruises to straight sets victory

Andy Murray kept his winning run going with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 first-round victory over Viktor Troicki at the St Petersburg Open today.

Murray is on a high after securing back-to-back Masters Series victories with a straight-sets win over Gilles Simon in Madrid on Sunday and the British No1 is the defending champion and top seed at the Russian event.

He only arrived in Russia yesterday and could have been forgiven for being below par in his first meeting with the Serb, but Murray prides himself on his fitness these days and was never in any danger of making an early exit. The Scot racked up his first break point in the fifth game, but Troicki saved it with an ace. The Briton was not to be denied on his second opportunity, however, and moved into a 3-2 lead.

Troicki, who is at a career-high ranking of 53rd, won the first two points of the next game but Murray recovered to cement his break. Having initially held his own, Troicki began to struggle and the top seed claimed another break of serve to take the set 6-3. He then made it five games in a row to open up a 2-0 lead in the second set.

Troicki, who reached the final in Washington in August, finally ended Murray's run of six straight games to get on the board in the second set, but it was merely delaying the inevitable as the champion easily served out the match.

The Scot will face a tricky test next against the exciting young Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-0 6-2 in the first round.

Murray continues St Petersburg charge

Thursday, 23 October 2008

http://www.independent.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00063/murray15_63895t.jpg

GETTY IMAGES Murray is the defending champion at the St Petersburg Open

Andy Murray moved one step closer to retaining his St Petersburg Open title today by breezing past Ernests Gulbis 6-4 6-2.

The British number one showed glimpses of his best form as the match wore on to beat the highly-rated Latvian in just over an hour.

Murray broke serve twice in both sets to set up a quarter-final with either Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic or France's Jeremy Chardy.

Gulbis defied the 46 ranking-point difference between the two in the opening exchanges and matched Murray up until the eighth game of the first set.

Three errors from the 20-year-old presented Murray with a golden chance to break the Latvian's serve but he hit back before Murray eventually broke after taking the game to deuce to open up a 5-3 lead.

Gulbis then broke back but Murray responded immediately by breaking his opponent's serve to love to take the first set 6-4.

The pair's only previous meeting had been at the Queen's club this summer when Murray needed three sets to overcome Gulbis, but he only needed two here to overcome his opponent.

The world number four broke Gulbis' serve twice again in the second set to seal the win.

He had to survive an early scare in the first game when Gulbis squandered a break point in the first game of the second set.

The number one seed held his nerve and broke Gulbis' serve at 30-40 in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead before he held his serve to leave him requiring one more win to finish the Latvian off.

He had two break points to break again but needed only one of them to complete a 6-4 6-2 victory.
