Of course. Why wouldn't he be amongst the favourites for it? People have a short memory. Murray outclasses Nadal one day, puts in a poor performance the next day and all of a sudden he's not a good hard court player.

Don't get me wrong, there is no reason why Murray hasn't shown he will be one of the favourites in the slams next year. It was just a question and I wondered if you would have still chosen him. I think he has good chances next year.

EDIT: Also I haven't seen anybody say Murray isn't a good hard court player just because he lost the final, and I definitely wasn't insinuating it.

Fed will take one (maaaybe two), Rafa will take one (even "maaaaaaaaaaaaaybier" two), there will be two surprises. I'm sick of two guys winning everything, even though I luv them both.

Well, he's only going to improve. He'll likely be at his peak in 2 or 3 years, so if he is this good now he'll be a hell of a player in future. When Federer is playing like he was today, you need to produce your best tennis. Murray didn't, unfortunately. It's good experience for the future, however.

For sure, Murray has not finished developing mentally, physically nor in terms of his exact usage of his large variety of options on the court. Next year is going to be VERY interesting and I wonder who else will step up to the plate and bring out some huge performances on the big stage.

Nadal can play much better than he did, he was clearly very tired. Federer will probably return to the level he had in the middle of last year, wich IMO is enough for him to beat Murray. Don't know abou Djokovic, but if he plays as he played this year's AO he will probably defeat Murray in straights. If Tsonga doesn't injury himself for the rest of the year he can have a good run at the AO next year. For me, Murray is the 4th favorite to win the AO2009.

My predictions:
Australian Open - Federer
French Open - Nadal
Wimbledon - Federer
US Open - Federer

I went four-for-four in 2008. I don't know how, but I got them right. Here's how I think 2009 will stack up:

Australian Open - Roger Federer
French Open - Rafael Nadal
Wimbledon - Roger Federer
US Open - Novak Djokovic

Roger will have a big-time comeback year, winning nine single titles. I think Tsonga will make at least a semi at Wimbledon, Federer won't make the final at the French.

-fed will prob go slamless for the rest of his career.

Today:
-Fed is gonna gain his #1 back
-He is surpassing Pete's record next year, just watch!

The only sure thing is that Rafa wins the French Open. And because I don’t see anyone else making the final, he’ll beat Roger yet again for his 5th title.

I’m guessing Roger wins two, maybe the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Djokovic for US Open.

It's a tough one to call as their both true masters of the surface, all I know is they'll both likely make the final without dropping a set. I anticipate a tight 5 setter going either way.

OK, I'm bored so:

Australian Open
Roger Federer loses early to some random top 50 player to finally end the amazing SF streak at Grand Slams. MTF declares his career over.
After being on the brink of defeat against Murray in the semifinal, Rafael Nadal wins his first HC slam by defeating Novak Djokovic in an epic 5-set final. Bud Collins picks Djokovic to win on the eve of the final. MTF declares Nadal the GOAT.

French Open
Roger Federer plays an amazing clay court season, finally beating Nadal in Monte Carlo. At the french open, Federer sweeps aside all competition, not losing a set before the final. On the eve of the final Federer claims that he now knows how to beat Nadal on clay, referring to his Monte Carlo win. Bud Collins agrees. In the final he is trashed in straights by Rafael Nadal. MTF declares Nadal the GOAT. In an MTF poll 80% believe that Nadal will complete the calendar slam. Federer is written off.

Wimbledon
Rafael Nadal shocks the tennis community by losing to a no-name serve and volleyer in the first round of Wimbledon. Roger Federer capitalizes by winning his sixth Wimbledon, defeating Andy Murray - Bud Collins pick to win - in the final. Federer has now tied Sampras record and an MTF poll has Federer winning 20 slams before his career is over. Infact this title will prove to be his last slam.

US Open
Novak Djokovic has had a solid year winning three hard court Masters tournaments, but hasn't done enough in the Grand Slams. Until the US Open, where he dismisses Rafael Nadal in the semifinal with surprising ease, and beats a resurrected Andy Roddick in the final, much to the dismay of Bud Collins, who had Roddick down as the winner. Roddick shocked the tennis world by beating Roger Federer in 5 sets in the semifinal.

Of course. Why wouldn't he be amongst the favourites for it? People have a short memory. Murray outclasses Nadal one day, puts in a poor performance the next day and all of a sudden he's not a good hard court player.

Actually he outclassed Nadal for two days, just one match.

I only hope Roger can win RG, just once, pretty Rafa please? :wavey:

But coming to real possiblities: Fed would probably win Wimby and USO again

I'm really sure about USO for several reasons:

1. that's his best surface in my opinion, even better than grass
2. most players are quite tired in this point, specially Rafa who tends to play EVERY damn tournament he can and that takes a huge toll on anybody's body
3. Who has taken him for FIVE sets on the NY final? Agassi and Roddick only made it to four, Hewitt and Murray were slaughtered and the Djoker lost two tiebreaks to him

US Open - Novak Djokovic

I'm reconsidering this now. I rewatched the Federer-Murray match and Roger was less dominant than I first recalled. Murray was awful at times. I think Roger probably won't win more than a major next year and Murray should get better.

Updated predictions:

Australian Open - Federer; probably with a big win over Nadal, getting everyone on MTF excited, predicting a grand slam and proclaiming Federer the greatest athlete in the history of mankind.

French Open - Nadal wins; Federer crumbles in the quarters. Not sure who the finalist would be. Maybe Wawrinka who looked solid on clay this year.

Wimbledon - I think it's about time we had a nice shakeup at Wimbledon, so I'm going with Murray over Tsonga. I have doubts sometimes about Murray's brain, but he has incredible hands and feel. Roger's time may be up.

US Open - I'm going to say Djokovic over Roger with Federer coming a win short from tying Tilden's record.

We're heading towards a few years of parity, I think.

might as well post again, since the original post is deleted for some reason, probably a server error.

imo it goes like this:

AO: The Gooch wins an epic five setter against Federer (the surprise finalist)
FO: Oscar Hernandez reigns in Paris, starting a new rivalry by defeating The Gooch in the final.
W: The King is the undisputed master of grasscourt tennis
USO: Ivo Minar stuns the world by winning over Andy Roddick in the final. he hits 76 winners and 55 aces.

TMC : The Gooch rallies after an exhausting season and beats Roko Karanusic, who lets the world know what to expect from him in 2010.

You suckers are all soooo very wrong. Let me explain to you the obvious truth:

Post USO 2008, Serena and Venus will be sick of meeting each other again and again. Why share the glory? Also Serena's huge hollywood wealth that she made with that hot bod must be running low so they want to win more slams.

Consequently, Serena will play on the ATP and win the calendar slam while Venus does it on the WTA.

To all the people that think that Federer will win one or more GS next year, consider this: Mirka is expecting, Roger is to become father for the first time. That changes your life, he may keep playing and training but his focus will shift and I doubt he will be able to mount a successful challenge at any GS next year.

Good start by me :-)

However, I am not conviced about the USO for Djokovic ... I hope it is Nadal too.

Fed can definitly win another slam it's just a case of being in the right place at the right time. He's in a better boat that Roddick who I still think can win another grand slam.

As far as the next two years go...

WI: Murray
US: Murray
AO: Murray

Roddick won't win another slam ever, unless he miraculously finds his 2003-05 forehand.

even then, he won't win.

Roddick playing at his very best in 2003-2004 would not beat nadal, federer or murray on any surface let alone 2 of the 3 which he would need to do to win a GS.

I guess we'll never know about that one will we. Unless we get out the time machine or something. Never say never, did anyone predict Goran winning it when he did? How about Safin at the AO in 06?

NO.

and NO.

The thing about predicting is that you can only state what should happen, not what will happen. Why not just hand Murray 3 grand slam trophies now, and give Nadal the next 3 RGs for good measure. That's why they play. Roddick has put himself in a very good position this year. On a fast surface Andy can beat Nadal and it's not like he's never beaten Murray on a hard court either. Call me delusional fan, but I know what's what. What means you never say never with a player as good as Roddick.

Roddick won't win another slam ever, unless he miraculously finds his 2003-05 forehand.

I doubt we'll see that forehand ever again, well except on clips of old matches. Contrary to popular belief Roddick isn't a shot maker. Shocking statements I know. His best matches are played when he serves well and puts pressure on the other guy serving. On a fast surface like the USO, or Wimbledon you're more likely to see him pull that shot out but on the slower surfaces with todays players it just isn't as an effective play as used to be.

So, yea, I'll just say I disagree. If Andy can find the right form, the draw falls into place, and the right people aren't in his way...I think he'll find another grand slam title.

Serve big, play well on the big points. The same way anyone else does it. It's not impossible, he's done it as recently as last year.

JimmyV

Man the bandwagoning on MTF is ridiculous. Federer loses a couple matches and all of a sudden the guy who's made 19 straight slam semi's and been in the finals of 14 of the last 15 slams is never even making a final again? Completely done?

Let's just go with the notion for now that there's ABSOLUTELY no way Federer will ever again beat anyone else in the top 4. I mean he beat 2 of the 3 at the 08' US Open, just two slams ago, but let's just assume he will never again even be mentioned in the same sentence as them.

Is it that hard to see a situation where he gets a kind slam draw, some of the top 3 go out early, and he makes a final where he doesn't have to face Djoke, Rafa, or Murray?

MacTheKnife

Yes but Hrbaty has wins over them as well, in fact he has a winning record over them also.

Lets face it, the nadal of 2008-2009 and even murray now is different class to them a few years ago
